Role of hepatitis B virus genotypes in chronic hepatitis B exacerbation
Hepatitis B virus (HBV) genotypes and precore and core promoter mutations were determined in 318 patients with HBV. Patients infected with HBV genotype B had a higher median alanine aminotransferase level and bilirubin level and a lower median albumin level during exacerbations of disease, compared with patients infected with HBV genotype C (all P < .001). By logistic regression analysis, HBV genotype B infection (P = .014) and low albumin levels (P = .006) were independently associated with a higher risk of hepatic decompensation during severe exacerbations of disease. Patients infected with genotype B had a significantly higher mortality due to hepatic decompensation than did patients with genotype C (70% vs. 27.8%; P = .05).published_or_final_versio

Social media is considered to play an important role in promoting government responsiveness. However, it is impossible for the government to respond to all issues in the actual situation. Especially when encountering controversial social incidents, the local government usually evades responsibility due to damage to reputation or interests. This paper argues that when a controversial social incident occurs in China, the traditional news media will work with social media to encourage the local government to respond. Three cases are selected according to the hot discussion index of Sina Weibo, China's largest social media platform for multiple-case studies. 21 participants were interviewed to explore the function of social media and traditional news media during the process of government responsiveness. The results showed that traditional news media played the role of professionalism, supervision, and broker to develop social incidents. And social media took the information aggregation part in most situations. Social media and traditional news media work together to promote the local government to make government responsiveness active

A comparison of the long-term health-related quality of life of handicap of stroke patients in Mainland China and Hong Kong
Purpose: To compare health related quality of life (HRQOL) and handicap of stroke survivors in Hong Kong (HK) and Chengdu (CD) in Mainland China.
Method: Fifty-four pairs of first ever stroke patients in CD and in HK matched by age, sex and Modified Barthel Index (MBI) were interviewed using a structured questionnaire at 16–36 months after stroke. HRQOL and handicap outcomes were evaluated by the Chinese version of the Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36) and London Handicap Scale (LHS) respectively.
Results: Compared to stroke patients in CD, HK subjects reported significantly greater handicap, especially in the occupation domain. HK subjects also had significantly lower HRQOL Z scores in domains of role limitations due to emotional or physical problems, and bodily pain. CD subjects had more social support, but had more difficulties in meeting medical costs, and were less likely to have regular
medical follow-up and dysphagia symptom. After adjusting for social and health related factors, the site differences in handicap and the role limitation (physical) domain of SF36 became insignificant.
Conclusions: CD stroke survivors had better scores in HRQOL and fewer handicaps than their counterparts in HK, because of social and health related factors.published_or_final_versio
Relationship between the development of precore and core promoter mutations and hepatitis B e antigen seroconversion in patients with chronic hepatitis B virus
Chinese patients with chronic hepatitis B virus (332 with and 44 without cirrhosis-related complications) were studied. Fifty percent of patients <30 years old had precore mutations. The prevalence of precore mutations among hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg)-positive patients, although lower than that among anti-HBe-positive patients (P = .031), was already high (44.2%). Median HBV DNA level in anti-HBe-positive patients was 1.5 × 106-1.55 × 106 copies/mL, irrespective of the presence or absence of precore mutations. There was no difference in the prevalence of precore mutations between patients with and without complications (P, not significant). However the prevalence of core promoter mutations was higher among patients with complications than among those without complications (90.5% vs. 69.3%, respectively; P = .003). In conclusion, precore mutations occurred in a large proportion of Chinese patients with chronic hepatitis B virus before HBeAg seroconversion. The development of complications was not related to precore mutations but was probably due to the persistence of significant viremia after HBeAg seroconversion.published_or_final_versio
Prognostic factors in severe exacerbation of chronic hepatitis B
Forty-seven patients with severe hepatitis B exacerbation were compared with patients who had mild exacerbation (n = 96) or no exacerbation (n = 96). Seventeen patients (36.2%) died or underwent liver transplantation. Preexisting cirrhosis and a prothrombin time (PT) of >30 s were associated with adverse outcome in 60.9% and 87.5% of patients, respectively. The rate of adverse outcome increased to 92.3% when albumin levels of ≤35 g/L and bilirubin levels of >200 μM were present. Other factors associated with adverse outcomes included peak bilirubin level, peak PT, time to reach peak PT, and the presence of encephalopathy and/or ascites. There was no difference in the frequency of precore mutations in patients with severe or mild exacerbation or without exacerbation. A significantly lower prevalence of core promoter mutants was found in patients with severe exacerbation (50%), compared with those who had mild exacerbation (81.3%; P = .004). Patients with severe exacerbation of hepatitis B with poor prognostic factors should be considered for early liver transplantation.published_or_final_versio
Novel SNPs polymorphism of bovine CACNA2D1 gene and their association with somatic cell score
Mastitis is a major cause of economic loss in dairy cattle. In this study, the bovine CACNA2D1 gene was taken as a candidate gene for mastitis resistance. The objective of this study was to identify single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the bovine CACNA2D1 gene and evaluate the association of these SNPs with mastitis in cattle. Through DNA sequencing and PCR-RFLP analysis, three mutations C367400T, A496561G and G519663A were detected in the cattle CACNA2D1 gene. Altogether 240 dairy cattle of three breeds (Holstein, Simmental, and Sanhe cattle) were genotyped and allele frequencies were determined. The effects of CACNA2D1 polymorphisms on somatic cell score (SCS) were analyzed and a significant association was found between G519663A and SCS. The mean of genotype GG was significantly lower than those of genotypes AG and AA. The results of this research will be useful in further studies to determine the role of the CACNA2D1 gene in mastitis resistance and further work will be necessary to investigate whether the CACNA2D1 gene play a role in defending the host from mastitis.Key words: Association analysis, CACNA2D1 gene, dairy breeds, mastitis, somatic cell score
Efficient and long-lived quantum memory with cold atoms inside a ring cavity
Quantum memories are regarded as one of the fundamental building blocks of
linear-optical quantum computation and long-distance quantum communication. A
long standing goal to realize scalable quantum information processing is to
build a long-lived and efficient quantum memory. There have been significant
efforts distributed towards this goal. However, either efficient but
short-lived or long-lived but inefficient quantum memories have been
demonstrated so far. Here we report a high-performance quantum memory in which
long lifetime and high retrieval efficiency meet for the first time. By placing
a ring cavity around an atomic ensemble, employing a pair of clock states,
creating a long-wavelength spin wave, and arranging the setup in the
gravitational direction, we realize a quantum memory with an intrinsic spin
wave to photon conversion efficiency of 73(2)% together with a storage lifetime
of 3.2(1) ms. This realization provides an essential tool towards scalable

AMS Radiocarbon Dating of Tianma-Qucun Site in Shanxi, China
Tianma-Qucun is the biggest site of Western Zhou Dynasty discovered in Shanxi Province, China. It has been recognized as the early capital of Jin, a vassal state of Western Zhou. The territories were granted to the first Marquis of Jin with the title in the early days of Western Zhou. Bone sample series from the site were radiocarbon-dated by accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) and calibrated with the Oxford calibration program OxCal 3.5. Bayesian analysis of the calibrated ages shows that the earliest residents of the Western Zhou came to Tianma-Qucun area in 1020-940 BC and the lower boundary of the Western Zhou is 796-754 BC, which corresponds well to the historical record 770 BC.Geochemistry & GeophysicsSCI(E)CPCI-S(ISTP)
