    Earthquake source parameters of the 2009 Mw 7.8 Fiordland (New Zealand) earthquake from L-band InSAR observations

    The 2009 MW7.8 Fiordland (New Zealand) earthquake is the largest to have occurred in New Zealand since the 1931 Mw 7.8 Hawke’s Bay earthquake, 1 000 km to the northwest. In this paper two tracks of ALOS PALSAR interferograms (one ascending and one descending) are used to determine fault geometry and slip distribution of this large earthquake. Modeling the event as dislocation in an elastic half-space suggests that the earthquake resulted from slip on a SSW-NNE orientated thrust fault that is associated with the subduction between the Pacific and Australian Plates, with oblique displacement of up to 6.3 m. This finding is consistent with the preliminary studies undertaken by the USGS using seismic data

    Study of several factors affecting crew escape trajectories from the Space Shuttle Orbiter at low-subsonic speeds

    Factors affecting the bailout characteristics from the space shuttle orbiter at low-subsonic speeds were investigated. In the 12-foot low-speed tunnel and the 4 by 7-meter tunnel with 0.03-scale models. The effect of crew-model exit velocity, body position, and body weight were studied with egress from the main side hatch with the orbiter upright and from the upper cabin hatch with the orbiter inverted. Crew model drag and flow field measurements around the orbiter were estimated. The high-angle-of-attack trim characteristics of the orbiter was determined by force tests in an attempt to improve bailout conditions. A computer simulation was made to evaluate the maneuver necessary to attain the high-angle-of-attack trim

    UCN Upscattering rates in a molecular deuterium crystal

    A calculation of ultra-cold neutron (UCN) upscattering rates in molecular deuterium solids has been carried out, taking into account intra-molecular exictations and phonons. The different moelcular species ortho-D2 (with even rotational quantum number J) and para-D2 (with odd J) exhibit significantly different UCN-phonon annihilation cross-sections. Para- to ortho-D2 conversion, furthermore, couples UCN to an energy bath of excited rotational states without mediating phonons. This anomalous upscattering mechanism restricts the UCN lifetime to 4.6 msec in a normal-D2 solid with 33% para content.Comment: 3 pages, one figur

    Imaging of Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies in the Near-UV

    We present the first ground-based U' (3410 angstroms) images of Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies (ULIGs). Strong U' emission (median total M_U' = -20.8) is seen in all systems and in some cases the extended tidal features (both the smooth stellar distribution and compact star-forming features) contribute up to 60-80% of the total flux. The star-forming regions in both samples are found to have ages based on spectral synthesis models in the range 10-100 Myrs, and most differences in color between them can be attributed to the effects of dust reddening. Additionally, it is found that star-formation in compact knots in the tidal tails is most prominent in those ULIGs which have double nuclei, suggesting that the star-formation rate in the tails peaks prior to the actual coalescence of the galaxy nuclei and diminishes quickly thereafter. Similar to results at other wavelengths, the observed star formation at U' can only account for a small fraction of the known bolometric luminosity of the ULIGs. Azimuthally averaged radial light profiles at U' are characterized by a sersic law with index n=2, which is intermediate between an exponential disk and an r^(-1/4) law and closely resembles the latter at large radii. The implications of this near-ultraviolet imaging for optical/near-infrared observations of high redshift counterparts of ULIGs are discussed.Comment: 30 pages, 4 tables, and 9 figures, 2 of which are JPEGs.     Monte Carlo Study of an Extended 3-State Potts Model on the Triangular Lattice

    By introducing a chiral term into the Hamiltonian of the 3-state Potts model on a triangular lattice additional symmetries are achieved between the clockwise and anticlockwise states and the ferromagnetic state. This model is investigated using Monte Carlo methods. We investigate the full phase diagram and find evidence for a line tricritical points separating the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases.Comment: 6 pages, 10 figure

    The Clemson Veterans Project exist to honor the stories of combat veterans from conflicts throughout our country\u27s history and do so in a professional manner expected from a university with such a rich military heritage. The project collected over 70 interviews in HD video. All videos have been made public on Youtube. The project was started to assist the Library of Congress with its own Veterans History Project. Before interviewing each student must take an exam on the digital file preparation process, interview courtesy, and then conduct a practice interview where they behave exactly as if it was a real interview. The videos are put onto DVDs along with accompanying documentation and then shipped in bulk. Going above the requirements for the LoC, each shipment contains a flash drive with every video and document in a digital format. Special interviews are selected for post-production including a custom made introduction
