Characterization of alpha and beta phases of tantalum coatings

    Get PDF
Sputtered tantalum forms two phases - α and β. The α and β phases have distinctly different crystalline structures and properties. The structure and the causes of formation of the β phase are still being studied by researchers. This is a study to distinguish and characterize these two phases. Samples from Bennet Labs and NJIT were characterized using techniques such as SEM, EDX, XRF, XRD, TEM and XAFS. Samples deposited at NJIT were used for an experimental study on the conditions favoring the formation of the phases, by depositing tantalum on heated steel and silicon substrates, additionally TEM analysis was carried out for a sample having a mixture of α and β phases to study its differences. The XRD results shows one of the sample to be highly textured β Tantalum. The XAFS results also show the α. phase to have a bcc structure with the characterstic coordination of bulk tantalurn. The local structure of β tantalum is compared to a theoretical model of P41mnm space group. The study confirm that the structure of tantalum belongs to this space group and has a 30-atom unit cell isomorphous with Uranium. The coordination of Ta atoms in the β phase is seen to be non isotropic. The results of the heating experiments suggest that coatings deposited on substrates without heating favored the formation of the β phase. The TEM analysis shows the β phase to be made up of larger grains of size 100-120 nm, which are about 4 times the size of the αphase grains

Using the Heritage of the St. Thomas Christians To Develop an Outreach Strategy

Problem The St. Thomas Christians in Kerala claim their spiritual heritage from Thomas the apostle. Yet they are not generally aware of a number of scriptural teachings including the seventh-day Sabbath, which Thomas and their forefathers observed. For the last one hundred years there has been no developed Seventh-day Adventist strategy to proclaim the full biblical message, which was their heritage, to this people group. Findings The St. Thomas Christians of Kerala, India, believe that Thomas the apostle took Christianity to India. Their very existence bears witness to it. Thomas is reported to have arrived in Kerala in A.D. 52. He preached among the settled Jews and Hindus and established churches. The St. Thomas Christians practiced a simple faith as taught by the apostle. They had two sacraments, baptism and Lord\u27s Supper, and they worshiped only on Saturday at least until the fourth century. They followed the Syriac liturgy. Until the sixteenth century they had ties with East Syrian (Persian) churches. They continued their Sabbath observance throughout this period. In the sixteenth century the St. Thomas Christians came into contact with the Roman Catholics. The subsequent establishment of the Inquisition and the Latinization program led to the Synod of Diamper (1599) and later to the Humbled Cross Oath in 1653. After the St. Thomas Christians came under Roman Catholicism, the church began to fracture. Using as a bridge the history and ancient doctrines of the St. Thomas Christians, especially the observance of the seventh-day Sabbath, a strategy was developed to evangelize nominal St. Thomas Christians in Kerala. It includes a preevangelism program for two months with various awareness programs, Bible study, and the organization of succeeding events. This is to be followed by an evangelistic crusade for 21 days, emphasizing the faith and practices of St. Thomas Christians. The final step will be the formation of a church and postbaptismal care, which include spiritual growth programs, a life development institute, cell group ministry, and erecting a church building for the congregation

During the last decade Maharashtra has emerged as a major exploiter of Indian mackerel. From a total of 884 tonnes in 1985 the mackerel catch in Maharashtra shot up to 38355 tonnes by 1996 with an annual average (1985-2000) of 20364 tonnes, indicating an increase of 43.4 fold, whereas, during the same period its increase in Kerala was only 7 fold

    Pelagic Fish

    Get PDF
Pelagic fish such as oil sardine, Indian mackerel and white baits are very popular among the people of Kerala, especially those living in the coastal belt, since time immemorial. These fish offen saved them from malnutrition and starvation. Even today these are the favourite food fish of the poor and middle class people. In Maharashtra and Gujarat the popular pelagic fish is the Bombay duck. Pelagic fish include different varieties of sardines, carangids, seerfish and tunas of different sizes and taste that we love to include in our daily meal

Reduced-Intensity Anthracycline-Free Chemoimmunotherapy in Elderly Patients With Newly Diagnosed or Relapsed Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma

Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) is the most common type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL); it has a cure rate of approximately 50% with standard anthracycline-based chemoimmunotherapy. However, the clinical outcomes of elderly unfit/frail DLBCL patients remain suboptimal due to poor tolerance of anthracycline-containing regimens. Herein, we report a series of seven elderly unfit patients with DLBCL who were treated with a reduced-intensity anthracycline-free chemoimmunotherapy (rituximab, cyclophosphamide, vincristine, and prednisone) regimen combined with lenalidomide (

Primary Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma of the Bone

Primary lymphoma of the bone (PLB) is a rare lymphoproliferative neoplasm that can present either as solitary or multiple bone lesions. We report four patients with PLB who were successfully treated with R-CHOP (rituximab, cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, and prednisone) followed by consolidative radiotherapy. All patients achieved a complete remission and had excellent long-term outcomes. PLB has a favorable response to combined modality treatment with chemoimmunotherapy and radiation. Long-term outcomes of PLB tend to be better than those of non-osseous diffuse large B-cell lymphoma

Impact of ring net on the mackerel fishery at Calicut

    Get PDF
With the introduction of ring net, there was considerable improvement in the mackerel fishery. The mackerel landing was almost fully contributed by ring net. During post-ring net period,16684 manpower brought 970 tonnes of mackerel with a catch per manpower of 58.14 kg. Due to the small mesh size of ring net and their better efficiency, the gear can cause over fishing and hence the fishery has to be watched closely in the coming years

Psychosocial support for families of persons with dementia through home based care programme from a developing country: Process of intervention development and pilot testing

In India, person with dementia continue to live with their families all through their illness period. It is common in India that because of the family relationships and cultural values the caregiving process is a joint effort made by the adult members in the family. Thus understanding the psychosocial issues of the caregivers of persons with dementia in the Indian context and providing appropriate psychosocial support for the caregivers is essential in the holistic approach for the care for persons with dementia. The current paper shares the process of development of psychosocial intervention for the families of persons with dementia and findings from the pilot study in urban Bangalore. The findings were helpful in systematically developing the content for the proposed homebased care programme for caregivers of persons with dementia. The pilot results show that the psychosocial support through home based programme for the family caregivers of persons with dementia is feasible and effective
