Fuzzy measures and discreteness
AbstractThe main result is to show that the space of nonmonotonic fuzzy measures on a measurable space (X,X) with total variation norm is separable if and only if the σ-algebra X is a finite set. Our result is related to fuzzy analysis, functional spaces and discrete mathematics
X-ray tomography-assisted study of a phase inversion process in ceramic hollow fiber systems – Towards practical structural design
Phase inversion-assisted extrusion processes provide a feasible approach for the development of micro-structured ceramic hollow fibers. The mass transport of the hollow fiber, which is closely correlated to the pore structure, is especially important in the application of fuel cell electrodes and membrane reactors. Whilst the relationship between the pore microstructure and the fabrication factors has been the subject of significant investigations, there remains much disagreement in the literature. Recent development in X-ray computed tomography (CT) has enabled new insight into 3D microstructures, which could help to realize practical morphology design and optimization. In this study, a series of alumina hollow fibers have been prepared with varied polymer binder (polyethersulfone, PESf) concentration and new polymer-based internal coagulant (aqueous solution of polyvinyl alcohol, PVA). For the first time, the micro-channels were characterized in 3D using X-ray CT to determine micro-channel densities and diameters in the radial direction, as well as the 2D measurement of the pore size in the sponge-like layer. Water permeation tests were then conducted to correlate the micro-structure of the hollow fiber to the permeability. Results show that the diameter of the micro-channels decreases as the concentration of polymer binder increases, but the pore size in the spongy-like layer becomes larger. When the polymer binder concentration is increased from 16 wt% to 30 wt%, the maximum micro-channel diameter is almost halved (from 29 to 15 µm), and the radial length is 60% longer, whereas the mean flow pore size in the sponge-like layer is increased from approximately 288 to 422 nm. Larger pore size in the spongy-like layer of the high PVA concentration sample contributes to a better permeability (pure water flux almost doubled), but the dimension of the micro-channels is less important. This study provides a new approach to optimize fabrication of hollow fibers for various applications
Asthma prevalence based on the Baidu index and China's Health Statistical Yearbook from 2011 to 2020 in China
BackgroundDue to environmental pollution, changes in lifestyle, and advancements in diagnostic technology, the prevalence of asthma has been increasing over the years. Although China has made early efforts in asthma epidemiology and prevention, there is still a lack of unified and comprehensive epidemiological research within the country. The objective of the study is to determine the nationwide prevalence distribution of asthma using the Baidu Index and China's Health Statistical Yearbook.MethodsBased on China's Health Statistical Yearbook, we analyzed the gender and age distribution of asthma in China from 2011 to 2020, as well as the length of hospitalization and associated costs. By utilizing the Baidu Index and setting the covering all 31 provinces and autonomous regions in China, we obtained the Baidu Index for the keyword 'asthma'. Heatmaps and growth ratios described the prevalence and growth of asthma in mainland China.ResultsThe average expenditure for discharged asthma (standard deviation) patients was ¥5,870 (808). The average length of stay (standard deviation) was 7.9 (0.38) days. During the period of 2011 to 2020, hospitalization expenses for asthma increased while the length of hospital stay decreased. The proportion of discharged patients who were children under the age of 5 were 25.3% (2011), 19.4% (2012), 16% (2013), 17.9% (2014), 13.9% (2015), 11.3% (2016), 10.2% (2017), 9.4% (2018), 8.1% (2019), and 7.2% (2020), respectively. The prevalence of asthma among boys was higher than girls before the age of 14. In contrast, the proportion of women with asthma was larger than men after the age of 14. During the period from 2011 to 2020, the median [The first quartile (Q1)-the third quartile (Q3)] daily asthma Baidu index in Guangdong, Beijing, Jiangsu, Sichuan, and Zhejiang were 419 (279–476), 328 (258–376), 315 (227–365), 272 (166–313), and 312 (233–362) respectively. Coastal regions showed higher levels of attention toward asthma, indicating a higher incidence rate. Since 2014, there has been a rapid increase in the level of attention toward asthma, with the provinces of Qinghai, Sichuan, and Guangdong experiencing the fastest growth.ConclusionThere are regional variations in the prevalence of asthma among different provinces in China, and the overall prevalence of asthma is increasing
Integrating 5-Hydroxymethylcytosine into the Epigenomic Landscape of Human Embryonic Stem Cells
Covalent modification of DNA distinguishes cellular identities and is crucial for regulating the pluripotency and differentiation of embryonic stem (ES) cells. The recent demonstration that 5-methylcytosine (5-mC) may be further modified to 5-hydroxymethylcytosine (5-hmC) in ES cells has revealed a novel regulatory paradigm to modulate the epigenetic landscape of pluripotency. To understand the role of 5-hmC in the epigenomic landscape of pluripotent cells, here we profile the genome-wide 5-hmC distribution and correlate it with the genomic profiles of 11 diverse histone modifications and six transcription factors in human ES cells. By integrating genomic 5-hmC signals with maps of histone enrichment, we link particular pluripotency-associated chromatin contexts with 5-hmC. Intriguingly, through additional correlations with defined chromatin signatures at promoter and enhancer subtypes, we show distinct enrichment of 5-hmC at enhancers marked with H3K4me1 and H3K27ac. These results suggest potential role(s) for 5-hmC in the regulation of specific promoters and enhancers. In addition, our results provide a detailed epigenomic map of 5-hmC from which to pursue future functional studies on the diverse regulatory roles associated with 5-hmC
Traditional Chinese Medicine for Acute Myocardial Infarction in Western Medicine Hospitals in China
Background: Amid national efforts to improve the quality of care for people with cardiovascular disease in China, the use of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is increasing, yet little is known about its use in the early management of acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Methods and Results: We aimed to examine intravenous use of TCM within the first 24 hours of hospitalization (early IV TCM) for AMI. Data come from the China Patient-centered Evaluative Assessment of Cardiac Events Retrospective Study of Acute Myocardial Infarction, restricted to a large, representative sample of Western medicine hospitals throughout China (n=162). We conducted a chart review of randomly sampled patients with AMI in 2001, 2006, and 2011, comparing early intravenous TCM use across years, predictors of any early intravenous TCM use, and association with in-hospital bleeding and mortality. From 2001 to 2011, early intravenous TCM use increased (2001: 38.2% versus 2006: 49.1% versus 2011: 56.1%; P<0.01). Nearly all (99%) hospitals used early intravenous TCM. Salvia miltiorrhiza was most commonly prescribed, used in one third (35.5%) of all patients admitted with AMI. Patients receiving any early intravenous TCM, compared with those who did not, were similar in age and sex and had fewer cardiovascular risk factors. In multivariable hierarchical models, admission to a secondary (versus tertiary) hospital was most strongly associated with early intravenous TCM use (odds ratio: 2.85; 95% confidence interval: 1.98–4.11). Hospital-level factors accounted for 55% of the variance (adjusted median odds ratio: 2.84). In exploratory analyses, there were no significant associations between early intravenous TCM and in-hospital bleeding or mortality. Conclusions: Early intravenous TCM use for AMI in China is increasing despite the lack of evidence of their benefit or harm. There is an urgent need to define the effects of these medications because they have become a staple of treatment in the world’s most populous country. In this paper we introduce and study the space of real-valued (s)-integrable functions for a monotonic measure, and consider some relations between this space and the space of real-valued measurable functions
Rock burst early-warning for thick coal seam in deep mining based on Logistic regressio
For difficult rock burst monitoring and early-warning for thick coal seam in deep mining, a rock burst early-warning model based on Logistic regression was established by use of conventional indexes (support resistance, borehole stress and gas concentration) as well as the one by use of comprehensive indexes including the conventional indexes (support resistance, borehole stress and gas concentration) and geophysical indexes (average focal distance, daily pulses and daily energy of microseism, and intensity of electromagnetic radiation). Quantitative expression between probability of rock burst occurrence and comprehensive indexes was obtained. Finally, the rock burst early-warning models were tested by use of measured data in Qianqiu Coal Mine. The research results show that forecasting accuracy rate of the rock burst early-warning model based on Logistic regression by use of comprehensive indexes achieves 89.2%, whose goodness of fit and forecasting accuracy rate is higher than the ones of the model by use of the conventional indexes
Size Effect of Concrete Specimens on the Acoustic Emission Characteristics under Uniaxial Compression Conditions
Acoustic emission (AE) experiments under uniaxial compression and cyclic loading-unloading compression conditions were performed using different sizes of cubic concrete specimens. The influences of the loading methods and the concrete sizes on the mechanical parameters and the concrete AE activities were analyzed. The loading method was found to have great impact on the deformation, failure, and energy dissipation of concrete materials. With the increase of the material size, the uniaxial compressive strength of the concrete specimens gradually decreased, while the corresponding strain of peak strength increased first and then decreased. The elasticity modulus fluctuated irregularly. Under the uniaxial compression conditions, five AE patterns corresponding to the deformation and failure of the concrete materials were observed. A significant nonlinear relationship was found between the AE and the stress level. The cumulative AE rings at the peak stress showed nonlinear growth with the increase of the concrete size. Based on an established relationship between the cumulative AE rings and the stress level, the necessary conditions for the existence of the quiet AE period were given. Under the uniaxial cyclic loading-unloading compression conditions, the Felicity ratio decreased first and then increased as the stress increased. The research results have some guiding significance to AE-based monitoring of internal stress evolution of coal, rock, and concrete materials and thereby enable assessment of their stability
