    Microwave assisted heterogeneous catalysis: effects of varying oxygen concentrations on the oxidative coupling of methane

    The oxidative coupling of methane was investigated over alumina supported La2O3/CeO2 catalysts under microwave dielectric heating conditions at different oxygen concentrations. It was observed that, at a given temperature using microwave heating, selectivities for both ethane and ethylene were notably higher when oxygen was absent than that in oxygen/methane mixtures. The differences were attributed to the localised heating of microwave radiation resulting in temperature inhomogeneity in the catalyst bed. A simplified model was used to estimate the temperature inhomogeneity; the temperature at the centre of the catalyst bed was 85 °C greater than that at the periphery when the catalyst was heated by microwaves in a gas mixture with an oxygen concentration of 12.5% (v/v), and the temperature difference was estimated to be 168 °C in the absence of oxygen

    Fast computation of radar cross-section by fast multipole method in conjunction with lifting wavelet-like transform

    The fast multipole method (FMM) in conjunction with the lifting wavelet-like transform scheme is proposed for the scattering analysis of differently shaped three-dimensional perfectly electrical conducting objects. As a flexible and efficient matrix compression technique, the proposed method can sparsify the aggregation matrix and disaggregation matrix in real time with compression ratio about 30%. The computational complexity and choice of proper wavelet are also discussed. Numerical simulation and complexity analysis have shown that the proposed method can speed up the aggregation and disaggregation steps of the FMM with lower memory requirements. © 2010 The Institution of Engineering and Technology.postprin

    Adaptive frequency sweep analysis for electromagnetic problems using the Thiele interpolating continued fractions

    A direct rational approximation method based on Thiele interpolating continued fractions theory is proposed for fast frequency sweep analysis of electromagnetic problems. And an adaptive algorithm is also formed. Compared with the conventional rational approximation method, the proposed method can get a rational approximation directly without a great number of matrix inverse computations and doesn't need to allocate much memory for high derivatives of the dense impedance matrix. Meanwhile, the computation of surface currents by continued fractions can be sped up as compared with the traditional rational approximation.     Machine-learning-aided cognitive reconfiguration for flexible-bandwidth HPC and data center networks [Invited]

    This paper proposes a machine-learning (ML)-aided cognitive approach for effective bandwidth reconfiguration in optically interconnected datacenter/high-performance computing (HPC) systems. The proposed approach relies on a Hyper-X-like architecture augmented with flexible-bandwidth photonic interconnections at large scales using a hierarchical intra/inter-POD photonic switching layout. We first formulate the problem of the connectivity graph and routing scheme optimization as a mixed-integer linear programming model. A two-phase heuristic algorithm and a joint optimization approach are devised to solve the problem with low time complexity. Then, we propose an ML-based end-to-end performance estimator design to assist the network control plane with intelligent decision making for bandwidth reconfiguration. Numerical simulations using traffic distribution profiles extracted from HPC applications traces as well as random traffic matrices verify the accuracy performance of the ML design estimator (<9% error) and demonstrate up to 5 x throughput gain from the proposed approach compared with the baseline Hyper-X network using fixed all-to-all intra/inter-portable data center interconnects.     Allelopathy of root exudates from different resistant eggplants to Verticillium dahliae and the identification of allelochemicals

    Three eggplant cultivars were inoculated with Verticillium dahliae Kleb. to assess their resistance to Verticillium wilt. Solanum tor was resistant, “Liyuanziqie” was tolerant, and “Xi’anlvqie” susceptible. The disease incidence and disease index of Verticillium wilt and the amount of V. dahliae in rhizospheric soil, variation of microbial composition, the allelopathy of root exudates to mycelium growth of V. dahliae and the chemical substances of root exudates from eggplant cultivars with different resistance to Verticillium wilt were investigated in this experiment. The results showed that the root exudates of resistant type could not only affect the growth and development of V. dahliae, but also influence V. dahliae indirectly through regulating soil microbial community composition. This may be one of the reasons for the increase of disease resistance. However, the susceptible type exhibited an opposite trend. It was inferred that the resistant type contained some particular components, such as  acohd, amide, pyranoid, fluorene, while the susceptible one comprised more types of components, that is, ketone, phenol, ester and phenolic acid.Key words: Allelopathy, allelochemical, root exudates, eggplant, Verticillium dahliae, Verticillium wilt, microbial composition

    Thermally induced conduction type conversion in n-type InP

    n-type semiconducting InP is changed into p-type semiconducting by short time annealing at 700 °C. Further annealing for a longer time leads to a second conduction-type conversion changing the material back to n type again but with a much higher resistivity. These conduction conversions indicate the formation of both acceptor and donor defects and the progressive variation of their relative concentrations during annealing. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.published_or_final_versio
