Low Temperature Susceptibility of the Noncentrosymmetric Superconductor CePt_3Si
We report ac susceptibility measurements of polycrystalline CePt_3Si down to
60 mK and in applied fields up to 9 T. In zero field, a full Meissner state
emerges at temperatures T/Tc < 0.3, where Tc=0.65 K is the onset transition
temperature. Though transport measurements show a relatively high upper
critical field Bc2 ~ 4-5 T, the low temperature susceptibility, \chi', is quite
fragile to applied field, with \chi' diminishing rapidly in fields of a few kG.
Interestingly, the field dependence of \chi' is well described by the power
law, 4\pi\chi'=(B/B_c)^{1/2}, where Bc is the field at which the onset of
resistance is observed in transport measurements.Comment: 5 figure

Neoadjuvant sipuleucel-T induces both Th1 activation and immune regulation in localized prostate cancer.
Sipuleucel-T is the only FDA-approved immunotherapy for metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer. The mechanism by which this treatment improves survival is not fully understood. We have previously shown that this treatment can induce the recruitment of CD4 and CD8 T cells to the tumor microenvironment. In this study, we examined the functional state of these T cells through gene expression profiling. We found that the magnitude of T cell signatures correlated with the frequency of T cells as measured by immunohistochemistry. Sipuleucel-T treatment was associated with increased expression of Th1-associated genes, but not Th2-, Th17 - or Treg-associated genes. Post-treatment tumor tissues with high CD8+T cell infiltration was associated with high levels of CXCL10 expression. On in situ hybridization, CXCL10+ cells colocalized with CD8+T cells in post-treatment prostatectomy tumor tissue. Neoadjuvant sipuleucel-T was also associated with upregulation of immune inhibitory checkpoints, including CTLA4 and TIGIT, and downregulation of the immune activation marker, dipeptidylpeptidase, DPP4. Treatment-associated declines in serum PSA were correlated with induction of Th1 response. In contrast, rises in serum PSA while on treatment were associated with the induction of multiple immune checkpoints, including CTLA4, CEACAM6 and TIGIT. This could represent adaptive immune resistance mechanisms induced by treatment. Taken together, neoadjuvant sipuleucel-T can induce both a Th1 response and negative immune regulation in the prostate cancer microenvironment
Effects of test conditions on shear behaviour of composite soil
Test conditions, such as shearing rate and normal stress, have been long recognised as influencing the measured shear strength of clays and sands. However, their influence on composite soils, which have a wide range of particle sizes, has attracted much less attention from researchers. In this study, a total of 35 direct shear tests at different shearing rates under different normal stresses were conducted on specimens prepared by mixing different proportions of kaolin and glass beads. The changes in volume and water content of sheared specimens and the mesostructure of shear surfaces were studied. The results reveal a positive correlation between volume change and deviation of water content between the shear zone and outer zones, suggesting that the shear-induced volume change occurred primarily in the shear zones. Moreover, high normal stress and low shearing rate produced a relatively small void ratio in the shear zones, facilitating volumetric contraction of the specimen and the development of polished and evenly slickensided shear surfaces. In addition, the residual friction angle of the specimens tested was found to decrease with the increase in normal stress. The high shearing rate caused an increase in residual strength in specimens with low fines fraction, and reduced it in specimens with high fines fraction.published_or_final_versio
