Comparative performance of double-focus and quadrupole mass spectrometers
Light-weight flight type double focus and quadruple mass spectrometer models were compared. Data cover size, weight, and power sensitivity required to achieve same resolution sensitivity at given mass number. Comparison was made using mathematical relationships. Analysis was confined to equal ion source area sensitivity variations not more than 40% over mass range

Combined Numerical Analysis of an Oil-free Twin Screw Compressor Using 3D CFD and 1D Multi-chamber Thermodynamic Model
The application of three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics in twin-screw compressors provides an outstanding opportunity for developers to gain an understanding of the complex internal flow phenomena occurring within the machine. Equipped with this knowledge, design parameters, such as clearances and port geometry, can be optimised, to enhance performance. However, as with all modelling, be it numerical or analytical, a high degree of certainty in the accuracy of the results is necessary.
This paper presents the results of a study of oil-free twin screw compressor in which the results of two modelling techniques are compared. The modelling techniques used are an analytical non-dimensional thermodynamic chamber model and a numerical computational fluid dynamic model. The paper presents an overview of an oil-free twin screw compressor machine, before describing important operating characteristics and the modelling techniques used. To validate, both models are compared against historical test data, this validation indicated the chamber model is more accurate. Following this, the focus will be on the comparison of key performance indicators, including, volume flow rate, volumetric efficiency, indicated power, and discharge temperature at varying duty points. The paper concludes that the difference between both models decreases as the compressor operating speed increases, although the level of variance is dependent on pressure ratio
A global optimization approach to solve multi-aircraft routing problems

Copyright 2009. Posted by permission of the publisher."This paper describes the formulation and solution of a multi-aircraft routing problem which is posed as a global optimization calculation. The paper extends previous work (involving a single aircraft using two dimensions) which established that the algorithm DIRECT is a suitable solution technique. The present work considers a number of ways of dealing with multiple routes using different problem decompositions. A further enhancement is the introduction of altitude to the problems so that full three-dimensional routes can be produced. Illustrative numerical results are presented involving up to three aircraft and including examples which feature routes over real-life terrain data

Development and implementation of Shuttle/IUS proximity operations flight design software
The High Fidelity Relative Motion Program (HFRMP), a trajectory/attitude numerical integration program, was developed and implemented on the MPAD HP-9825A desk top computer systems. A solar and a lunar ephemeris is included in the HFRMP along with models of the oblate Earth, a rotating atmosphere, the orbiter's OMS/RCS/DAP system, orbiter vents, rotor dynamics, and upper stage propulsion systems. Although designed primarily for the analysis of proximity operations, it is useful in other areas such as attitude/stability analysis, propulsive consumables estimation, and trajector perturbation studies. An unique identification was assigned to each of the various configurations of the HFRMP that were developed to test new techniques and algorithms are briefly described. These include the HFRMP Versions 03H, 03M, 03T, 03U, and 05D. Development of orbiter/upper stage separation techniques including flight design support for the TDRS-A and Galileo deployment flights and design of standard maneuver sequences is discussed. Also, the development and implementation of the Euler angle conversion program is briefly addressed

Liberalizing trade in agriculture : developing countries in Asia and the post-Doha agenda
The author provides an overview and data relevant to the interests of developing countries as they engage in continuing agricultural trade negotiations set forth in the World Trade Organization Ministerial held in Doha, Qatar in November 2001. He examines country performance in agricultural trade, income levels, and population characteristics, with a focus on developing country members of the Asian Development Bank. The author concludes that trends in agricultural trade in the past 10 years are quite heterogeneous across developing regions. Shares of agriculture in GDP are still high in the East Asia and Pacific and South Asia regions. Moreover, data indicate that trade reform in export partners, particularly OECD countries, will affect a significant share of the population in these developing countries, resulting in rural poverty alleviation. Trade liberalization is expected to benefit net exporter countries, particularly those that are highly open to trade. What is also important, but often neglected, is a country's pattern of specialization between domestic supply and exports. Major topics and activities are: (1) flight phase standardization; (2) flight profile standardization; (3) maneuver targeting for solid rocket motors; (4) relative motion and RCS (Reaction Control System) jet flowfield plotting programs; (5) on-orbit aerodynamic models; (6) terminal approach strategy for payload retrieval/docking; (7) proximity navigation; and (8) desk-top flight simulator for proximity operations.
