The Poetry Jam held from April 11-12, 1978 was a precursor to the annual literary festival, which began the same year.
Participants: Richard Wilbur has published ten volumes of poetry, including Things of This World, The Poems of Richard Wilbur, and recently released The Mind Reader. He has authored two translations, an operetta, several plays, children\u27s books, and numerous critical articles. Currently a Professor of English at Smith College and editor of the Wesleyan University Poetry Series, Wilbur has received numerous prizes and awards, among them the Pulitzer Prize, National Book Award, and the Prix de Rome. W. D. Snodgrass is currently the Visiting Poet at Old Dominion University. He is the author of Heart\u27s Needle, After Experience, and The Fuhrer Bunker, as well as a pseudonymous book. In addition to these volumes of poetry, Snodgrass has published a collection of critical essays and several translations. He is a winner of the Pulitzer Prize, and numerous other awards, including the Guiness Poetry Award, an Academy of American Poets fellowship, and the Centennial Medal of the Government of Rumania. Since 1973, Dave Smith has published three volumes of poetry, Mean Rufus Throw Down, The Fisherman\u27s Whore, and Cumberland Station. His works include numerous stories and critical essays. Editor of the poetry journal The Back Door, Smith is currently Director of Creative Writing at the University of Utah. He is a native of Virginia. This collection documents the ministries, family life and literary career of Wilbur Moorehead Smith. The centerpiece of the collection is his extensive correspondence with family, colleagues and publishers, dating from 1915 through 1972. Many of the documents in the Biographical, Pastorates, Independent Board and Moody files were used by Dr. Smith in writing his autobiography, Before I Forget. Also included are documents related to his literary, speaking and teaching career, including a collection of his published bibliographies, articles and pamphlets, notes and manuscripts for his speaking engagements, Bible study guides for both church groups and students and the topical files which supported this lifelong work as a well-read and popular Bible scholar and teacher
