    Repertoire size and song sharing among American Redstarts (Setophaga ruticilla) at the University of Michigan Biological Station.

    BirdsAmong many passerine species, repertoire size for a given adult male is thought to directly impact fitness as a result of myriad evolutionary pressures. Recent evidence suggests, however, that the percentage of songs shared within a given males repertoire, regardless of repertoire size, may actually be responsible for the increased fitness previously thought to be influenced by repertoire size alone. Highly shared songs similar in two distant geographic regions may also function for conspecific recognition beyond mate attraction. I observed song sharing for a population of American Restarts (Setophaga ruticilla) located on Grapevine Point (GVP), one mile northeast of the University of Michigan Biological Station in Pellston, MI. By indentifying eight distinct song types on GVP, I documented the rate of songs shared and repertoire size for five male American Redstarts. Mean repertoire size for adult males on GVP did not differ significantly from the same mean calculated for American Redstart populations located in New Brunswick, Canada (Lemon et al. 1985). Song Type 1 was the most highly shared song on GVP and was very similar to the most shared song type (Song Type 1) in New Brunswick. These similarities support the hypothesis that highly shared song types of one population will also be highly shared among other populations.     Bubble-Driven Inertial Micropump

    The fundamental action of the bubble-driven inertial micropump is investigated. The pump has no moving parts and consists of a thermal resistor placed asymmetrically within a straight channel connecting two reservoirs. Using numerical simulations, the net flow is studied as a function of channel geometry, resistor location, vapor bubble strength, fluid viscosity, and surface tension. Two major regimes of behavior are identified: axial and non-axial. In the axial regime, the drive bubble either remains inside the channel or continues to grow axially when it reaches the reservoir. In the non-axial regime the bubble grows out of the channel and in all three dimensions while inside the reservoir. The net flow in the axial regime is parabolic with respect to the hydraulic diameter of the channel cross-section but in the non-axial regime it is not. From numerical modeling, it is determined that the net flow is maximal when the axial regime crosses over to the non-axial regime. To elucidate the basic physical principles of the pump, a phenomenological one-dimensional model is developed and solved. A linear array of micropumps has been built using silicon-SU8 fabrication technology, and semi-continuous pumping across a 2 mm-wide channel has been demonstrated experimentally.     3D printing for bio-synthetic biliary stents

    Three-dimensional (3D) printing is an additive manufacturing method that holds great potential in a variety of future patient-specific medical technologies. This project validated a novel crosslinked polyvinyl alcohol (XL-PVA) 3D printed stent infused with collagen, human placental mesenchymal stem cells (PMSCs), and cholangiocytes. The biofabrication method in the present study examined 3D printing and collagen injection molding for rapid prototyping of customized living biliary stents with clinical applications in the setting of malignant and benign bile duct obstructions. XL-PVA stents showed hydrophilic swelling and addition of radiocontrast to the stent matrix improved radiographic opacity. Collagen loaded with PMSCs contracted tightly around hydrophilic stents and dense choloangiocyte coatings were verified through histology and fluorescence microscopy. It is anticipated that design elements used in these stents may enable appropriate stent placement, provide protection of the stent-stem cell matrix against bile constituents, and potentially limit biofilm development. Overall, this approach may allow physicians to create personalized bio-integrating stents for use in biliary procedures and lays a foundation for new patient-specific stent fabrication techniques

    The broad band spectral properties of binary X-ray pulsars

    The X-ray telescopes on board BeppoSAX are an optimal set of instruments to observe bright galactic binary pulsars. These sources emit very hard and quite complex X-ray spectra that can be accurately measured with BeppoSAX between 0.1 and 200 keV. A prototype of this complexity, the source Her X-1, shows at least seven different components in its spectrum. A broad band measure is therefore of paramount importance to have a thorough insight into the physics of the emitting region. Moreover the detection of cyclotron features, when present, allows a direct and highly significant measure of the magnetic field intensity in the emission region. In this paper we briefly report the results obtained with BeppoSAX on this class of sources, with emphasis on the detection and on the measured properties of the cyclotron lines.Comment: 10 Latex pages, 4 figures, uses psfig.sty.     Imperfect Platform Competition: A General Framework

    We propose a general model of imperfect competition among multi-product firms, the consumption of whose goods yields externalities from one consumer to another. We extend the allocation approach of Weyl (2010)'s monopoly model, proposing a solution concept, Insulated Equilibrium, that allows for tractable analysis of competition. In such an equilibrium each firm's price on one side of the market adjusts to all firms' participation levels on the other side, so as to insulate its own allocation. This eliminates both the indeterminacy of consumer reactions once platforms have set their tariffs and the multiplicity of reaction functions that platforms can have to one another's tariffs. Our approach allows us to derive intuitive first-order conditions characterizing equilibrium without restrictive assumptions and to analyze the effects of competition, mergers and regulation

    Contribution of host-derived growth factors to in vivo growth of a transplantable murine mammary carcinoma.

    The contribution of host-derived growth factors to tumour growth in vivo was studied using the transplantable murine mammary carcinoma, MT1, grown in syngeneic mice. Promotion of growth of the mammary carcinoma by a factor(s) from the host was evident in experiments in which the carcinoma cells were inoculated intraperitoneally. In this environment, tumours develop as multiple solid nodules, each probably arising from an individual cell or a small cluster of cells. Tumour growth was found to occur in the peritoneal cavity following inoculation of 10(3) cells, but an inoculum of as few as ten cells grew if a leucocyte-rich exudate had first been induced. To determine which host-derived growth factors might contribute to growth of MT1, extracts of the tumour were first examined for growth factor activity. Fractionation of tumour extracts by either ion-exchange chromatography or gel filtration revealed several peaks of mitogenic activity, but none of this could be attributed to epidermal growth factor (EGF). Accordingly, an anti-EGF antibody was tested as a putative inhibitor of tumour growth as any effect of this antibody could be ascribed to removal of EGF derived from the host. The antibody was found to have potent anti-tumour activity when tested against MT1 tumours that had been inoculated into the peritoneal cavity. In contrast, the antibody had little effect on growth of the discrete tumour mass which formed when MT1 was transplanted subcutaneously. The results suggest that host-derived EGF contributes to establishment of microcolonies of MT1 carcinoma within the peritoneal cavity. This may be directly, by providing growth factors to supplement those produced by the tumour until it reaches a certain critical mass to sustain autocrine growth, or indirectly, by affecting the production of other growth-stimulatory factors or cytokines

    Multi-scale gyrokinetic simulations: Comparison with experiment and implications for predicting turbulence and transport

    To better understand the role of cross-scale coupling in experimental conditions, a series of multi-scale gyrokinetic simulations were performed on Alcator C-Mod, L-mode plasmas. These simulations, performed using all experimental inputs and realistic ion to electron mass ratio ((mi/me)1∕2 = 60.0), simultaneously capture turbulence at the ion (kΞρs∌(1.0)) and electron-scales (kΞρe∌(1.0)). Direct comparison with experimental heat fluxes and electron profile stiffness indicates that Electron Temperature Gradient (ETG) streamers and strong cross-scale turbulence coupling likely exist in both of the experimental conditions studied. The coupling between ion and electron-scales exists in the form of energy cascades, modification of zonal flow dynamics, and the effective shearing of ETG turbulence by long wavelength, Ion Temperature Gradient (ITG) turbulence. The tightly coupled nature of ITG and ETG turbulence in these realistic plasma conditions is shown to have significant implications for the interpretation of experimental transport and fluctuations. Initial attempts are made to develop a “rule of thumb” based on linear physics, to help predict when cross-scale coupling plays an important role and to inform future modeling of experimental discharges.     Theoretical spectra of photoevaporating protoplanetary discs: An atlas of atomic and low-ionisation emission lines

    We present a calculation of the atomic and low-ionisation emission line spectra of photoevaporating protoplanetary discs. Line luminosities and profiles are obtained from detailed photoionisation calculations of the disc and wind structures surrounding young active solar-type stars. The disc and wind density and velocity fields were obtained from the recently developed radiation-hydrodynamic models of Owen et al., that include stellar X-ray and EUV irradiation of protoplanetary discs at various stages of clearing, from primordial sources to inner hole sources of various hole sizes. Our models compare favourably with currently available observations, lending support to an X-ray driven photoevaporation model for disc dispersal. In particular, we find that X-rays drive a warm, predominantly neutral flow where the OI 6300A line can be produced by neutral hydrogen collisional excitation. Our models can, for the first time, provide a very good match to both luminosities and profiles of the low-velocity component of the OI 6300A line and other forbidden lines observed by Hartigan et al., which covered a large sample of T-Tauri stars. We find that the OI 6300A and the NeII 12.8um lines are predominantly produced in the X-ray-driven wind and thus appear blue-shifted by a few km/s for some of the systems when observed at non-edge-on inclinations. We note however that blue-shifts are only produced under certain conditions: X-ray luminosity, spectral shape and inner hole size all affect the location of the emitting region and the physical conditions in the wind. We caution therefore that while a blueshifted line is a tell-tale sign of an outflow, the lack of a blueshift should not be necessarily interpreted as a lack of outflow.Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures, accepted to be published in MNRAS - changes in the revised version: reference list update
