Specific : and practices in the urban periphery
This body of work attempts to revisit the American suburban condition as a potential site of healing for the United States. Polarized politics have drawn hard lines between different groups of people in the US, typically along urban and rural identities. If the suburb is potentially defined as neither urban nor rural, what can it teach us about bridging cultural gaps that have opened up in America?
The suburb, generalized into a concept I call “peripherality”, can teach practices that are decentered and heterogeneous. Architecture, as a discipline whose role could be defined in this peripheral sense, always acting in-between and in collaboration with other disciplines, has the potential to engage with the suburban condition to put these practices in motion and become physical. Inspired by the haphazard and non-picturesque spaces of the Midwest, where factories and farms and quiet homes have managed to find their coexistence in this non-rural, non-urban matrix, this thesis seeks to promote the interstitial, the fragmented, the de-centered as a mode of practice and way of life
Creating safety in a context of conflicting interests: The watch officer on board of a Dutch frigate
The watch officer on board of vessels of the Netherlands Royal Navy has to deal with a wide variety of interest during his/her duty. Despite the wide variety of interests the watch officer has to manage, the amount of incidents and accidents is few. Apparently, the watch officers of the Netherlands Royal Navy are well able to manage this wide variety of interests. The aim of this thesis research was to find out how this could be, how the watch officers apparently are able to create safety in a context of conflicting interests. To answer the question how the watch officer creates safety in this context of conflicting interests, a case study has been performed on board of one of the frigates of the Netherlands Royal Navy. During a three-month deployment, a total of six watch officers were interviewed and observed. The data from these interviews and observations was complemented with data gathered through the thorough study of relevant documentation. A total of one hundred and thirty-eight interests were identified during this thesis research. It is plausible to suggest, from this number, a context of conflicting interest to arise. What this study points out is that the success of the watch officer in the creation of safety is explained by the fact that he/she uses different strategies, such as the creation of rest on the bridge (by ordering people to be quiet or to leave), the creation of time on the bridge (by maneuvering the ship) and the management of workload in different ways, to manage these conflicting interests. A finding of particular interest is the fact that these strategies in itself also form part of the interests of the watch officer

Reflections of/on the City : literature, space, and postmodernity
Reflection of/on the City:
Literature, Space, and Postmodernity is an interdisciplinary study of
literary representations of the postmodern city. While the early 20th
century was characterized by the metropolis, with a high concentration
of people and enterprise, the second half of the 20th century is marked
by, on the one hand, a different kind of city – sprawling, flexible, to
be understood in different frameworks – and on the other hand a changed
usage of existing urban space. This study explores aspects of the
postmodern city by looking at American literary works from the 1960s to
the end of the century. These aspects are represented in literary works,
of course, but my usage of these texts is explicitly geared towards
looking beyond literary categories. Literary works do not only offer a
reflection of, but importantly also a reflection on the city. My aim is
to approach urban issues by using literature as a way of thinking about
the city, which can therefore be brought together with theoretical of
social scientific ways of thinking.LEI Universiteit LeidenModern and Contemporary Studie
