Acoustic transmission through compound subwavelength slit arrays

formed of aluminium slats is explored, both experimentally and numerically. For a simple, subwavelength
periodic slit-array, it is well known that Fabry-Perot-like wave-guide resonances, supported
by the slit-cavities, hybridising with bound acoustic surface waves, result in ‘Enhanced Acoustic
Transmission’ at frequencies determined by the length, width and separation of each slit-cavity. We
demonstrate that altering the spacing or width of some of the slits to form a compound array (i.e.
an array having a basis comprised of more than one slit) results in sharp dips in the transmission
spectra, that may have a strong angular dependence. These features correspond to ‘phase resonances’,
which have been studied extensively in the electromagnetic case. This geometry allows for
additional near-field configurations compared to the simple array, whereby the field in adjacent cavities
can be out-of-phase. Several types of compound slit-array are investigated; one such structure
is optimised to minimise the effect of boundary-layer loss mechanisms present in each slit cavity,

Experimental characterisation of the bound acoustic surface modes supported by honeycomb and hexagonal hole arrays

Available from Nature Research via the DOI in this record. The Dirac point and associated linear dispersion exhibited in the band structure of bound (non-radiative) acoustic surface modes supported on a honeycomb array of holes is explored. An aluminium plate with a honeycomb lattice of periodic sub-wavelength perforations is characterised by local pressure field measurements above the sample surface to obtain the full band-structure of bound modes. The local pressure fields of the bound modes at the K and M symmetry points are imaged, and the losses at frequencies near the Dirac frequency are shown to increase monotonically as the mode travels through the K point at the Dirac frequency on the honeycomb lattice. Boundary-layer effects on acoustic transmission through narrow slit cavities
PublishedJournal ArticleWe explore the slit-width dependence of the resonant transmission of sound in air through both a slit array formed of aluminum slats and a single open-ended slit cavity in an aluminum plate. Our experimental results accord well with Lord Rayleigh's theory concerning how thin viscous and thermal boundary layers at a slit's walls affect the acoustic wave across the whole slit cavity. By measuring accurately the frequencies of the Fabry-Perot-like cavity resonances, we find a significant 5% reduction in the effective speed of sound through the slits when an individual viscous boundary layer occupies only 5% of the total slit width. Importantly, this effect is true for any airborne slit cavity, with the reduction being achieved despite the slit width being on a far larger scale than an individual boundary layer's thickness. This work demonstrates that the recent prevalent loss-free treatment of narrow slit cavities within acoustic metamaterials is unrealistic.The authors would like to thank DSTL for their financial support
Slow waves on long helices

Available on open access from Nature Research via the DOI in this recordSlowing light in a non-dispersive and controllable fashion opens the door to many new phenomena in photonics. As such, many schemes have been put forward to decrease the velocity of light, most of which are limited in bandwidth or incur high losses. In this paper we show that a long metallic helix supports a low-loss, broadband slow wave with a mode index that can be controlled via geometrical design. For one particular geometry, we characterise the dispersion of the mode, finding a relatively constant mode index of [Formula: see text] 45 between 10 and 30 GHz. We compare our experimental results to both a geometrical model and full numerical simulation to quantify and understand the limitations in bandwidth. We find that the bandwidth of the region of linear dispersion is associated with the degree of hybridisation between the fields of a helical mode that travels around the helical wire and an axial mode that disperses along the light line. Finally, we discuss approaches to broaden the frequency range of near-constant mode index: we find that placing a straight wire along the axis of the helix suppresses the interaction between the axial and high index modes supported by the helix, leading to both an increase in bandwidth and a more linear dispersion.Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC)QinetiQ Ltd
Genomic insights into the population history and adaptive traits of Latin American Criollo cattle.
Criollo cattle, the descendants of animals brought by Iberian colonists to the Americas, have been the subject of natural and human-mediated selection in novel tropical agroecological zones for centuries. Consequently, these breeds have evolved distinct characteristics such as resistance to diseases and exceptional heat tolerance. In addition to European taurine (Bos taurus) ancestry, it has been proposed that gene flow from African taurine and Asian indicine (Bos indicus) cattle has shaped the ancestry of Criollo cattle. In this study, we analysed Criollo breeds from Colombia and Venezuela using whole-genome sequencing (WGS) and single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) array data to examine population structure and admixture at high resolution. Analysis of genetic structure and ancestry components provided evidence for African taurine and Asian indicine admixture in Criollo cattle. In addition, using WGS data, we detected selection signatures associated with a myriad of adaptive traits, revealing genes linked to thermotolerance, reproduction, fertility, immunity and distinct coat and skin coloration traits. This study underscores the remarkable adaptability of Criollo cattle and highlights the genetic richness and potential of these breeds in the face of climate change, habitat flux and disease challenges. Further research is warranted to leverage these findings for more effective and sustainable cattle breeding programmes
Pulmonary talc granulomatosis mimicking malignant disease 30 years after last exposure: a case report
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Pulmonary talc granulomatosis is a rare disorder characterized by the development of foreign body granuloma secondary to talc exposure. Previous case reports have documented the illness in current intravenous drug users who inject medications intended for oral use. We present a rare case of the disease in a patient with a distant history of heroin abuse who presented initially with history and imaging findings highly suggestive of malignancy.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>A 53-year-old man reported a 4-month history of increasing dyspnea and weight loss. He had a long history of smoking and admission chest X-ray revealed a density in the right hemithorax. Computed tomography confirmed a probable mass with further speculated opacities in both lung fields suspicious for malignant spread. Biopsies obtained using endobronchial ultrasound-guided aspiration returned negative for malignancy and showed bronchial epithelial cells with foreign body giant cell reaction and polarizable birefringent talc crystals.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>This case demonstrates a rare presentation of talc granulomatosis three decades after the last likely exposure. The history and imaging findings in a chronic smoker were initially strongly suggestive of malignant disease, and we recommend that talc-induced lung disease is considered in any patient with multiple scattered pulmonary lesions and a history of intravenous drug use. Confirmation of the disease by biopsy is essential, but unfortunately there are few successful proven management options for patients with worsening disease.</p
What is multidisciplinary cancer care like in practice? a protocol for a mixed-method study to characterise ambulatory oncology services in the Australian public sector

Introduction An understanding of the real-world provision of oncology outpatient services can help maintain service quality in the face of escalating demand and tight budgets, by informing the design of interventions that improve the effectiveness or efficiency of provision. The aims of this study are threefold. First, to develop an understanding of cancer services in outpatient clinics by characterising the organisation and practice of multidisciplinary care (MDC). Second, to explore the key areas of: (a) clinical decision-making and (b) engagement with patients' supportive needs. Third, to identify barriers to, and facilitators of, the delivery of quality care in these settings. Methods and analysis A suite of mixed-methods studies will be implemented at six hospitals providing cancer outpatient clinics, with a staged roll-out. In Stage One, we will examine policies, use unstructured observations and undertake interviews with key health professionals to characterise the organisation and delivery of MDC. In Stage Two, observations of practice will continue, to deepen our understanding, and to inform two focused studies. The first will explore decision-making practices and the second will examine how staff engage with patients' needs; both studies involve interviews, to complement observation. As part of the study of supportive care, we will examine the implications of an introduction of patient-reported measures (PRMs) into care, adding surveys to interviews before and after PRMs roll-out. Data analysis will account for site-specific and cross-site issues using an adapted Qualitative Rapid Appraisal, Rigorous Analysis approach. Quantitative data from clinician surveys will be statistically analysed and triangulated with the related qualitative study findings. Ethics and dissemination Ethical approval was granted by South Eastern Sydney Local Health District Human Research Ethics Committee (no. 18/207). Findings will be shared with participating hospitals and widely disseminated through publications and presentations
The complexities, coordination, culture and capacities that characterise the delivery of oncology services in the common areas of ambulatory settings.
BACKGROUND: Relatively little is understood about real-world provision of oncology care in ambulatory outpatient clinics (OPCs). This study aimed to: 1) develop an understanding of behaviours and practices inherent in the delivery of cancer services in OPC common areas by characterising the organisation and implementation of this care; and 2) identify barriers to, and facilitators of, the delivery of this care in OPC common areas. METHODS: A purpose-designed ethnographic study was employed in four public hospital OPCs. Informal field scoping activities were followed by in-situ observations, key informant interviews and document review. A view of OPCs as complex adaptive systems was used as a scaffold for the data collection and interpretation, with the intent of understanding 'work as done'. Data were analysed using an adapted "Qualitative Rapid Appraisal, Rigorous Analysis" approach. RESULTS: Field observations were conducted over 135 h, interviews over 6.5 h and documents were reviewed. Analysis found six themes. Staff working in OPCs see themselves as part of small local teams and as part of a broader multidisciplinary care team. Professional role boundaries could be unclear in practice, as duties expanded to meet demand or to stop patients "falling through the cracks." Formal care processes in OPCs were supported by relationships, social capital and informal, but invaluable, institutional expertise. Features of the clinic layout, such as the proximity of departments, affected professional interactions. Staff were aware of inter- and intra-service communication difficulties and employed strategies to minimise negative impacts on patients. We found that complexity, coordination, culture and capacity underpin the themes that characterise this care provision. CONCLUSIONS: The study advances understanding of how multidisciplinary care is delivered in ambulatory settings and the factors which promote or inhibit effective care practice. Time pressures, communication challenges and competing priorities can pose barriers to care delivery. OPC care is facilitated by: self-organisation of participants; professional acumen; institutional knowledge; social ties and relationships between and within professional groups; and commitment to patient-centred care. An understanding of the realities of 'work-as-done' may help OPCs to sustain high-quality care in the face of escalating service demand
