    Cows and Colobus (Procolobus kirkii): Resource-Sharing Habits at Jozani National Park

    Due to population compression, the Zanzibar red colobus monkeys of Jozani have been forced to explore new food options on the ground. I studied the food preferences of this endangered species in the agricultural land adjacent to Jozani National Park and compared it with the species consumed by local cattle that graze in the same space. This information, along with a preliminary behavioral assessment of the red colobus monkeys when near cattle, provides a first look at the food species eaten by both cows and colobus, in addition to documenting some of the direct and indirect interactions that occur between them. This data may be used to shed light on the previously unknown nature of resource sharing between an endangered species and local livestock

    Concentric Contra-Rotating Dual Shaft Vertical Axis Wind Turbine

    A typical vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT) consists of two or more airfoils all attached to a single central axis. The wind turbine style most commonly found in renewable energy is the horizontal axis wind turbine (HAWT) that have a high energy production efficiency in exchange for requiring large amounts of land and air space. Alternatively, a VAWT can function in low speeds and in smaller less typical locations. As a result, novel VAWT designs are researched to improve their energy efficiency. An example of a novel VAWT is the concentric counter-rotating VAWT investigated theoretically using the 2D computational fluid dynamic (CFD) software Ansys Fluent. A mesh sensitivity analysis is conducted to optimize resource usage during the simulations. Three mesh sizes were chosen for both geometries and tested at three different rotational velocities. The power generation of the double rotor system was shown to be greater than the single in all cases except for at 600 rpms where the single set produced 2.43 kW and the double rotor produced only 2.12 kW. Further investigation is necessary to improve upon the functioning CFD model to further improve the simulation accuracy. However, the interactions between energized air and shed low pressure vortices show a positive aerodynamic interaction between the two rotors and demonstrate the potential for the concentric counter-rotating VAWT to produce energy more efficiently.     Emily Walz interviews Distinguished Service Award winners Sherman Clarke (2005) and Daniel Starr (2014) on June 6, 2017, at the New York Public Library. Both librarians are career catalogers who joined ARLIS in its earliest years; Clarke is best known as the founder of Art NACO. Clarke and Starr both share their experiences during the Vietnam War, when each was classified as a conscientious objector. The interview covers the challenges of the Society, including working with management companies and volunteer participation. The interviewees also discuss the culture of ARLIS/NA, in particular its inclusion of gay and lesbian members. Clarke and Starr are long-standing roommates at annual conferences

In recognition of these threats, the President\u27s Task Force on Environmental Health Risks and Safety Risks to Children (Task Force) was established by Executive Order in 1997. The original Task Force created the first coordinated federal response to eliminate childhood lead poisoning in the United States and set an ambitious ten-year timeline to achieve its goals of prevention, treatment, research, and progress management. However, the most recent Task Force retreated from these bold goals. Rather than eliminating lead poisoning, in 2018 the Task Force sought merely to reduce it. This Article provides a comprehensive overview of the dangers of lead exposure, details the federal government\u27s evolving response to lead poisoning, and, for the first time, disseminates previously unpublished comments on Drafting a New Federal Strategy to Reduce Childhood Lead Exposures and Impacts, submitted to the Task Force in 2017, ahead of its most recent report. By providing these comments publicly, this Article creates a record of critical recommendations to the Task Force, provides best practices for the federal government\u27s response to lead poisoning, and encourages federal policymakers to take the necessary steps to meet the original goal of eradicating lead hazards and protecting children from lead poisoning

    Health Justice Strategies to Eradicate Lead Poisoning: An Urgent Call to Safeguard Future Generations

    Despite over a century of evidence that lead is a neurotoxin that causes irreparable harm, today, lead continues to pervade children\u27s environments and remains a constant threat to health and wellbeing. One in three homes across the United States housing children under the age of six has significant lead-based paint hazards that place occupants at risk of permanent neurological harm and lifelong poor health risks. Federal, state, and local governments must use a range of primary prevention strategies in order to fully eradicate the risks and protect children from lead poisoning. This Article provides a comprehensive examination of best practices for addressing lead poisoning and proposes urgent reform measures at the local and state levels. Successful interventions ultimately prioritize health justice strategies and rely on community ownership and cross-sector participation; dedicate significant resources and funding to completely eliminate lead in the environment; and prioritize primary prevention practices that identify lead-based paint hazards before children are exposed

    In der Pandemie ist die Lebenszufriedenheit deutlich gesunken, vor allem in Zeiten von Kontaktbeschränkungen. Nach Lockerung der Restriktionen ist die Lebenszufriedenheit wieder etwas angestiegen. Um gut durch Krisen zu kommen, sind u.a. drei Dinge wichtig: Gute Beziehungen in der Familie, finanzielle Sicherheit und die Fähigkeit zu Optimismus. Familie zu haben, und dabei vor allem eine gute Beziehungsqualität in der Partnerschaft und zu den Kindern, war in der Pandemie zentral für das Wohlbefinden. Familienpolitik ist in Krisenzeiten besonders wichtig. Dies umfasst verlässliche, ganztägige Kita- und Schulbetreuung, niederschwellige psychosoziale Beratungsangebote für Kinder und Jugendliche sowie familienfreundlichere Arbeitsplätze. Etwa ein Drittel der Menschen im mittleren Alter hatte ernsthafte finanzielle Sorgen in der Pandemie, was mit einer niedrigeren Lebenszufriedenheit verbunden war. Politische Maßnahmen wie Kurzarbeit (oder bei der Energiekrise die Gaspreisbremse), die finanzielle Risiken schnell abfedern, sind hier hilfreich. Die Fähigkeit, auch in Krisen positive Seiten zu sehen, hängt eng mit einer höheren Lebenszufriedenheit zusammen. Eine Prise Optimismus und ein Blick auf andere Lebensaspekte können in Krisen zu Resilienz beitragen. Politik sollte die Chancen, die sich aus Krisen ergeben, angehen und unterstützende Maßnahmen breit kommunizieren

    Measurement of the cosmic ray spectrum above 4×10184{\times}10^{18} eV using inclined events detected with the Pierre Auger Observatory

    A measurement of the cosmic-ray spectrum for energies exceeding 4×10184{\times}10^{18} eV is presented, which is based on the analysis of showers with zenith angles greater than 6060^{\circ} detected with the Pierre Auger Observatory between 1 January 2004 and 31 December 2013. The measured spectrum confirms a flux suppression at the highest energies. Above 5.3×10185.3{\times}10^{18} eV, the "ankle", the flux can be described by a power law EγE^{-\gamma} with index γ=2.70±0.02(stat)±0.1(sys)\gamma=2.70 \pm 0.02 \,\text{(stat)} \pm 0.1\,\text{(sys)} followed by a smooth suppression region. For the energy (EsE_\text{s}) at which the spectral flux has fallen to one-half of its extrapolated value in the absence of suppression, we find Es=(5.12±0.25(stat)1.2+1.0(sys))×1019E_\text{s}=(5.12\pm0.25\,\text{(stat)}^{+1.0}_{-1.2}\,\text{(sys)}){\times}10^{19} eV.Comment: Replaced with published version.     Energy Estimation of Cosmic Rays with the Engineering Radio Array of the Pierre Auger Observatory

    The Auger Engineering Radio Array (AERA) is part of the Pierre Auger Observatory and is used to detect the radio emission of cosmic-ray air showers. These observations are compared to the data of the surface detector stations of the Observatory, which provide well-calibrated information on the cosmic-ray energies and arrival directions. The response of the radio stations in the 30 to 80 MHz regime has been thoroughly calibrated to enable the reconstruction of the incoming electric field. For the latter, the energy deposit per area is determined from the radio pulses at each observer position and is interpolated using a two-dimensional function that takes into account signal asymmetries due to interference between the geomagnetic and charge-excess emission components. The spatial integral over the signal distribution gives a direct measurement of the energy transferred from the primary cosmic ray into radio emission in the AERA frequency range. We measure 15.8 MeV of radiation energy for a 1 EeV air shower arriving perpendicularly to the geomagnetic field. This radiation energy -- corrected for geometrical effects -- is used as a cosmic-ray energy estimator. Performing an absolute energy calibration against the surface-detector information, we observe that this radio-energy estimator scales quadratically with the cosmic-ray energy as expected for coherent emission. We find an energy resolution of the radio reconstruction of 22% for the data set and 17% for a high-quality subset containing only events with at least five radio stations with signal.Comment: Replaced with published version.
