Sovereign-debt Renegotiations: A Strategic Analysis
The process of debt-rescheduling between a creditor and a sovereign (LDC) debtor is modeled as a noncooperative game built on a one-sector growth model. The creditor's threat to impose default penalties is ignored here as inherently incredible; instead, the debtor's motivation for repayment is to reap benefits from attaining an improved credit standing in international capital markets. The creditor can forgive portions of the outstanding debt so that a real-time bargaining process results with concessions being in the form of debt-service payments by the debtor and debt forgiveness by the creditor. Subgame-perfect equilibria of the game are characterized the main finding is that these all result in Pareto optima in which the creditor extracts all the surplus.
Applications of LANDSAT data to the integrated economic development of Mindoro, Phillipines
LANDSAT data is seen as providing essential up-to-date resource information for the planning process. LANDSAT data of Mindoro Island in the Philippines was processed to provide thematic maps showing patterns of agriculture, forest cover, terrain, wetlands and water turbidity. A hybrid approach using both supervised and unsupervised classification techniques resulted in 30 different scene classes which were subsequently color-coded and mapped at a scale of 1:250,000. In addition, intensive image analysis is being carried out in evaluating the images. The images, maps, and aerial statistics are being used to provide data to seven technical departments in planning the economic development of Mindoro. Multispectral aircraft imagery was collected to compliment the application of LANDSAT data and validate the classification results

constant K=1. Now we extend that approach to the case of general K
Mission: Impossible (Escape from the Lyman Limit)
We investigate the intrinsic opacity of high-redshift galaxies to outgoing
ionising photons using high-quality photometry of a sample of 27
spectroscopically-identified galaxies of redshift 1.9<z<3.5 in the Hubble Deep
Field. Our measurement is based on maximum-likelihood fitting of model galaxy
spectral energy distributions-including the effects of intrinsic Lyman-limit
absorption and random realizations of intervening Lyman-series and Lyman-limit
absorption-to photometry of galaxies from space- and ground-based broad-band
images. Our method provides several important advantages over the methods used
by previous groups, including most importantly that two-dimensional sky
subtraction of faint-galaxy images is more robust than one-dimensional sky
subtraction of faint-galaxy spectra. We find at the 3sigma statistical
confidence level that on average no more than 4% of the ionising photons escape
galaxies of redshift 1.9<z<3.5. This result is consistent with observations of
low- and moderate-redshift galaxies but is in direct contradiction to a recent
result based on medium-resolution spectroscopy of high-redshift (z~3) galaxies.
Dividing our sample in subsamples according to luminosity, intrinsic
ultraviolet colour, and redshift, we find no evidence for selection effects
that could explain such discrepancy. Even when all systematic effects are
included, the data could not realistically accomodate any escape fraction value
