    A time-series study of percutaneous closure of patent foramen ovale: premature adoption?

    To evaluate the impact of National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidance in January 2005 and subsequent trial evidence on the adoption of percutaneous closure of patent foramen ovale (PCPFO).A retrospective time series study was conducted using the Inpatient Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) England. A total of 3801 patients, aged ≥18 and ≤60 years, who had PCPFO from 1 April 2006 to 31 March 2012 in England. Percentage change annualised (PCA) in PCPFO procedure rates between initial NICE guidance and publication of trial results was analysed.Between Quarter 2, 2006 and Quarter 4, 2009, 2163 PCPFO procedures were performed, with an increasing PCA of 48.4%. The procedure rate peaked before the presentation of equivocal results from the first randomised controlled trial (RCT) in late 2010, and declined between Quarter 4, 2009 and Quarter 4, 2011 (PCA=-15.3%). Of more than 2300 patients recruited to three RCTs, only 71 were recruited in English hospitals.PCPFO was rapidly adopted after the publication of initial NICE guidance despite the absence of RCT evidence of efficacy. Very few English patients participated in international RCTs of PCPFO, suggesting that NICE recommendations also failed to encourage the generation of RCT evidence

    Experimental investigations of the effects of cutting angle on chattering of a flexible manipulator

    When a machine tool is mounted at the tip of a robotic manipulator, the manipulator becomes more flexible (the natural frequencies are lowered). Moreover, for a given flexible manipulator, its compliance will be different depending on feedback gains, configurations, and direction of interest. Here, the compliance of a manipulator is derived analytically, and its magnitude is represented as a compliance ellipsoid. Then, using a two-link flexible manipulator with an abrasive cut off saw, the experimental investigation shows that the chattering varies with the saw cutting angle due to different compliance.     A Physical Model-based Correction for Charge Traps in the Hubble Space Telescope's Wide Field Camera 3 Near-IR Detector and Applications to Transiting Exoplanets and Brown Dwarfs

    The Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) near-IR channel is extensively used in time-resolved observations, especially for transiting exoplanet spectroscopy and brown dwarf and directly imaged exoplanet rotational phase mapping. The ramp effect is the dominant source of systematics in the WFC3 for time-resolved observations, which limits its photometric precision. Current mitigation strategies are based on empirical fits and require additional orbits "to help the telescope reach a thermal equilibrium". We show that the ramp effect profiles can be explained and corrected with high fidelity using charge trapping theories. We also present a model for this process that can be used to predict and to correct charge trap systematics. Our model is based on a very small number of parameters that are intrinsic to the detector. We find that these parameters are very stable between the different datasets, and we provide best-fit values. Our model is tested with more than 120 orbits (∼40\sim40 visits) of WFC3 observations and is proved to be able to provide near photon noise limited corrections for observations made with both staring and scanning modes of transiting exoplanets as well as for starting-mode observations of brown dwarfs. After our model correction, the light curve of the first orbit in each visit has the same photometric precision as subsequent orbits, so data from the first orbit need no longer be discarded. Near IR arrays with the same physical characteristics (e.g., JWST/NIRCam) may also benefit from the extension of this model, if similar systematic profiles are observed.Comment: 16 pages, 13 figures, accepted to Astronomical Journa

    Comparison of several system identification methods for flexible structures

    In the last few years various methods of identifying structural dynamics models from modal testing data have appeared. A comparison is presented of four of these algorithms: the Eigensystem Realization Algorithm (ERA), the modified version ERA/DC where DC indicated that it makes use of data correlation, the Q-Markov Cover algorithm, and an algorithm due to Moonen, DeMoor, Vandenberghe, and Vandewalle. The comparison is made using a five mode computer module of the 20 meter Mini-Mast truss structure at NASA Langley Research Center, and various noise levels are superimposed to produced simulated data. The results show that for the example considered ERA/DC generally gives the best results; that ERA/DC is always at least as good as ERA which is shown to be a special case of ERA/DC; that Q-Markov requires the use of significantly more data than ERA/DC to produce comparable results; and that is some situations Q-Markov cannot produce comparable results

    River otter (Lutra canadensis) management in Arkansas is hampered by a lack of information on population parameters. This initial study on the biology of Arkansas river otter is concerned with present distribution and harvest trends. Otter occur throughout Arkansas, except in the upper Ozark region. A distributional shift, apparently along the Arkansas River, has led to an increase in otter harvest in the Ouachita Mountain region. A dramatic increase in otter harvest over the past four years (1976-1979) is attributable, in part, to a pelt price increase. Additionally, nuisance level beaver (Castor canadensis) populations and an extended trapping season for beaver may have influenced the otter harvest
