    2010 Student Organic Farm

    Get PDF
In 2010, the ISU Student Organic Farm (SOF) completed our fifth season at the ISU Horticulture Research Station. This was an exciting yet challenging year for the SOF as we began selling Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) shares for the first time. This was done in order to address some of the perennial problems identified by SOF participants, particularly the challenges of successfully managing an acre of organic vegetables on a voluntary basis. We learned a lot in this first year and overall the CSA was a great success! We had more committed involvement from participants, more food was produced and distributed to new outlets, and several improvements to infrastructure and soil fertility were made, including purchasing and installing drip irrigation and the planting of a winter cover crop

A comparative qualitative study of Marianismo : Mexican and Mexican American women\u27s perspectives on their Latina values, women\u27s roles and their parents\u27 influence

The research study had three goals. First, the study explored and compared adherence to Marianismo values in Mexican women born in Mexico and Mexican- American women born in the U.S. The hypothesis was that Mexican women would endorse more Marianismo values because Mexican-American women who are born, raised and educated in the U.S. are more likely to adopt more American values. Second, the study gathered and compared the women\u27s perspectives on cultural differences between U.S. and Latino culture views of the women\u27s role. Third, the study sought to further understand the relationship between acculturation and Marianismo to ascertain differences and patterns through four likert-type questions based on theory of acculturation adaptations by Berry (1980). The study used a qualitative method, semi-structured interviews with seven Mexican women and seven Mexican-American women recruited in Northern California. Interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed and coded by themes. Major findings showed differences and similarities between the two groups endorsement of Marianismo values such as differences in how they viewed their roles. The Mexican women viewed their role as mother and in terms of duties, and Mexican- American women viewed their role as independent and discussed ambitions of education and career. The groups also differed in their view of a good woman . The groups were similar in messages received from parents about sex and marriage, and viewing their mothers as sacrificing. The groups differed in their perspective on cultural differences. Further research is needed to explore the relationship of Marianismo and biculturalism and to explore positive aspects of Marianismo

Intervention Program to Increase Preparedness for Life After High School

    Get PDF
Based on the research conducted on “at-risk” youths, many high school students struggle with transitioning into adulthood. This capstone project was implemented at Learning for Life Charter School (LFLCS), an alternative charter school serving middle and high school at-risk youths. The seniors at LFLCS lack preparedness for life after high school. This capstone project, Adopt a Senior, was an intervention program to increase preparedness and ease the transition to life among graduating seniors. Participating seniors developed a post-graduation plan focusing on their future goals. Eight of the 31 LFLCS seniors participated in the program, and four students developed a post-graduation plan. It is recommended that LFLCS continue implementing Adopt a Senior as it can increase student participation and preparedness

The role of indigenous knowledge and innovation in creating food sovereignty in the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin

Today Native Americans have higher rates of diet-related illness and mortalities than any other racial or ethnic group in the United States. These figures reflect the many challenges to the land base, cultural identity, spiritual life, environmental quality and stability of local economies and political institutions which, in part, support healthy diets. The rediscovery and re-creation of sustainable, local food systems which include traditional foods is increasingly seen as a way to solve some of these pressing problems at both the community and individual level. Collectively, these efforts are building tribal nations which are food sovereign. Through participant observation, interviews and focus groups this research documents and analyzes the knowledge, practices, beliefs, and the process of rediscovery associated with traditional foods and local food system revival that members of the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin employ and experience as they attempt to become food sovereign once again. Findings suggest that the resurgence of traditional culture has paralleled the relocalization of the Oneida food system and that traditional foods played a substantial role in this process. The accumulation and movement of knowledge within the community also reveals the importance of interdependence between community members--and between people and the natural environment--that was both a goal and part of the process of food system revitalization in Oneida. Recognizing that food production and distribution are part of the shared cultural fabric of both tribal and non-tribal members living in the Oneida reservation, I propose that western farming practices have--and can continue to be--indigenized and function as resources for building community while creating food sovereignty

Case studies: Raman implementation for process lifecycle management in fermentation based processes

    Get PDF
Existing metabolite analyzers for several inline fermentation based vaccine processes are becoming obsolete in upcoming years. Analyzers are used to support classified parameters and attributes as well as characterization of the fermentation processes. A PAT solution is preferred as a replacement as it would allow for enhanced process understanding and control. Raman spectroscopy has been aligned as a core technology for implementation with varying challenges based on media, organism, processing parameters and attributes being measured. Implementation requires a highly collaborative approach across functions and sites to ensure effective implementation with no interruption to supply. Using a standardized approach to Raman model development and validation, robust models have been developed for 2 product lines with implementation scheduled over the next three years

School Counselor Self-Efficacy in Advocating for Self: How Prepared Are We?

    Get PDF
Advocacy is a central component of providing comprehensive school counseling programs. Often, counselor advocacy entails advocating for the profession and clients. Utilizing the New General Self-Efficacy scale, this quantitative study examined the effect of advocacy training type, counselor education program level, and CACREP program attendance on the self-efficacy of school counselors in advocating for self. School counselors\u27 self-efficacy in advocating for self (as a school counselor), rather than advocacy for the profession and/or students, was assessed. Analysis revealed advocacy training was a statistically significant predictor of self-efficacy in advocating for self, while program level and CACREP attendance were not significant predictors. Implications for counselor preparation and counselor education are discussed
