This publication brings together the key elements of the 16 presentations made at the Second Annual Virtual MHM in WinS Conference at UNICEF Headquarters in New York City on 21 November 2013. Building on recommendations from the MHM 2012 virtual conference, the 2013 conference focused on the research tools and instruments being used to explore MHM barriers and practices and to evaluate the interventions being trialed or implemented in various contexts

    Disaggregating diabetes

    Get PDF
Interest in disaggregating diabetes into numerous subtypes is growing as patients and providers recognize the limitations of standard diabetes typologies. As anthropologists, we draw attention to how ‘subtyping’ may reduce stigma derived from the connection between obesity and ‘type 2 diabetes’. We highlight the complexities that drive diabetes and argue that an exclusive or dominant focus on diet and obesity obfuscates other underlying risks. Yet, we warn that subtyping may promote unnecessary pharmaceuticalization, especially for other subtypes of diabetes that may be associated with stress and inflammation. We call upon providers to continue to closely attend to patients’ lived experiences. While we recognize the shortcomings of the existing classificatory scheme, patients’ outcomes and prognoses are often more closely connected to the social and medical support they receive than to the underlying metabolic classification

The purpose of the research is to design strategies for the management of the organizational climate from the methodology of work at home in organizations. This review article took as a source of study the databases of Redalyc, sky, Scopus, science direct, human and virtual management pro, along with specialized bulletins and current legal regulations in order to carry out the systematic review of the management of the organizational climate from work at home methodology. It was obtained as a result that organizations can develop positive and collaborative work environments even being in different places while continuing to manage healthy lifestyle programs, promotion and prevention of psychosocial risks and the management and use of working time

WOU Community Health + Polk County Family Thrive Kits: Social Marketing Campaign To Prevent COVID-19 Among Latinx Families

    Get PDF
The WOU Community Health + Polk County COVID-19 Project is a partnership between Western Oregon University and Polk County Public Health Services that provides contact tracing and outreach efforts to Polk County, OR. During this pandemic, Latinx families have been disproportionately affected by COVID-19. For this reason, our team has developed Family Thrive kits that follow health literacy guidelines and provide culturally appropriate information for families in English and Spanish. The purpose of the Family Thrive kit is to provide information and materials that encourage safe COVID-19 practices and family well-being. Information provided is tailored to the needs of families with children and focusing on several health issues and local resources. As of June 2021, we will have collaborated with more than 20 community-based organizations (CBO’s) and provided more than 2,246 kits to families throughout Polk County. We continue developing materials and building relationships with new CBO’s to raise awareness of COVID-19 prevention strategies

Adsorptive properties and on-demand magnetic response of lignin@Fe3O4 nanoparticles at castor oil–water interfaces

    Get PDF
Lignin@Fe3O4 nanoparticles adsorb at oil–water interfaces, form Pickering emulsions, induce on-demand magnetic responses to break emulsions, and can sequester oil from water. Lignin@Fe3O4 nanoparticles were prepared using a pH-induced precipitation method and were fully characterized. These were used to prepare Pickering emulsions with castor oil/Sudan red G dye and water at various oil/water volume ratios and nanoparticle concentrations. The stability and demulsification of the emulsions under different magnetic fields generated with permanent magnets (0–540 mT) were investigated using microscopy images and by visual inspection over time. The results showed that the Pickering emulsions were more stable at the castor oil/water ratio of 50/50 and above. Increasing the concentration of lignin@Fe3O4 improved the emulsion stability and demulsification rates with 540 mT applied magnetic field strength. The adsorption of lignin@Fe3O4 nanoparticles at the oil/water interface using 1-pentanol evaporation through Marangoni effects was demonstrated, and magnetic manipulation of a lignin@Fe3O4 stabilized castor oil spill in water was shown. Nanoparticle concentration and applied magnetic field strengths were analyzed for the recovery of spilled oil from water; it was observed that increasing the magnetic strength increased oil spill motion for a lignin@Fe3O4 concentration of up to 0.8 mg mL−1 at 540 mT. Overall, this study demonstrates the potential of lignin-magnetite nanocomposites for rapid on-demand magnetic responses to externally induced stimuli
