complementar a esfera estética.
Can we associate the reading of a work to a way of communication? In other
words, can a work of art be an act of communication?
This thesis wants to present an idea that the work of art is not obliged to be a
way of communication or to communicate something. Communication
assumes a circulation between two elements: transmitter and receiver, but also
the focus on the message that we wish to be understandable to both. Creator
and beholder, human as they are, have a variable dimension. Not only the
creator will be different from the beholder, but also this one will be different
from all his similar, and consequently it is in the direct correlativity beholder –
work of art that this lack of communication stands out. First, the work of art is
the repository of some elements, which define and characterize it. On the other
hand, beholder is prominently the promoter of the several meaning that
circumscribe the artistic process and that becomes the signification attributed to
the work.
Can the understanding of the work (considered invariable its physical
existence) be reached? In this analysis, we consider that this understanding is
based on the passage from the significant to the real meaning of the work and
that its concept can be reached through its comprehension or extension, and it
can change because of the factors extrinsic to the work of art.
So, this study underlines a paradox: communication/non-communication in art,
taking for reference the conditions of space-time linearity - where an historic
diachrony of art and the analysis of the communication relativity of the work in
geographical space help to settle the central idea of this work – as well as the
coadjutorship of the elements that belong to the artistic process, that is to say,
creator/work of art/beholder, to complement the aesthetic sphere. It is in
uneasy game of the coding/decoding, objectivity/subjectivity,
information/meaning, one can see the key element for the comprehension of
this question, however polemical.
Anyway, with so many decisive differences between the media used today in
art, each one with individual material and stylistic characteristics, as well as
particular languages, it becomes more necessary to reflect over the questions
that art ask for, consciously or not. In this moment, when the question “is this
beautiful?, give place to a more anguishing one, “is this art?”; in a moment
when savoir-faire is strongly questioned, in a time when where everything
concerning the idea of art is no longer evident, as in itself, as in its relation with
different publics, we also assist to the questioning of its communicative
function.POCI; FCT; FS
