    Fitting State Space Models with EViews

    This paper demonstrates how state space models can be fitted in EViews. We first briefly introduce EViews as an econometric software package. Next we fit a local level model to the Nile data. We then show how a multivariate âÂÂlatent riskâ model can be developed, making use of the EViews programming environment. We conclude by summarizing the possibilities and limitations of the software package when it comes to state space modeling.

    Macrophages, PPARs, and Cancer

    Mononuclear phagocytes often function as control switches of the immune system, securing the balance between pro- and anti-inflammatory reactions. For this purpose and depending on the activating stimuli, these cells can develop into different subsets: proinflammatory classically activated (M1) or anti-inflammatory alternatively activated (M2) macrophages. The expression of the nuclear peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs) is regulated by M1- or M2-inducing stimuli, and these receptors are generally considered to counteract inflammatory M1 macrophages, while actively promoting M2 activation. This is of importance in a tumor context, where M1 are important initiators of inflammation-driven cancers. As a consequence, PPAR agonists are potentially usefull for inhibiting the early phases of tumorigenesis through their antagonistic effect on M1. In more established tumors, the macrophage phenotype is more diverse, making it more difficult to predict the outcome of PPAR agonism. Overall, in our view current knowledge provides a sound basis for the clinical evaluation of PPAR ligands as chemopreventive agents in chronic inflammation-associated cancer development, while cautioning against the unthoughtful application of these agents as cancer therapeutics

    Formation of energy gap in higher dimensional spin-orbital liquids

    A Schwinger boson mean field theory is developed for spin liquids in a symmetric spin-orbital model in higher dimensions. Spin, orbital and coupled spin-orbital operators are treated equally. We evaluate the dynamic correlation functions and collective excitations spectra. As the collective excitations have a finite energy gap, we conclude that the ground state is a spin-orbital liquid with a two-fold degeneracy, which breaks the discrete spin-orbital symmetry. Possible relevence of this spin liquid state to several realistic systems, such as CaV4_4V9_9 and Na2_2Sb2_2Ti2_2O, are discussed.Comment: 4 pages with 1 figur

    Darboux transformations for quasi-exactly solvable Hamiltonians

    We construct new quasi-exactly solvable one-dimensional potentials through Darboux transformations. Three directions are investigated: Reducible and two types of irreducible second-order transformations. The irreducible transformations of the first type give singular intermediate potentials and the ones of the second type give complex-valued intermediate potentials while final potentials are meaningful in all cases.
