Validation of the new Hipparcos reduction
Context.A new reduction of the astrometric data as produced by the Hipparcos
mission has been published, claiming accuracies for nearly all stars brighter
than magnitude Hp = 8 to be better, by up to a factor 4, than in the original
catalogue. Aims.The new Hipparcos astrometric catalogue is checked for the
quality of the data and the consistency of the formal errors as well as the
possible presence of error correlations. The differences with the earlier
publication are explained. Methods. The internal errors are followed through
the reduction process, and the external errors are investigated on the basis of
a comparison with radio observations of a small selection of stars, and the
distribution of negative parallaxes. Error correlation levels are investigated
and the reduction by more than a factor 10 as obtained in the new catalogue is
explained. Results.The formal errors on the parallaxes for the new catalogue
are confirmed. The presence of a small amount of additional noise, though
unlikely, cannot be ruled out. Conclusions. The new reduction of the Hipparcos
astrometric data provides an improvement by a factor 2.2 in the total weight
compared to the catalogue published in 1997, and provides much improved data
for a wide range of studies on stellar luminosities and local galactic

Energy Dependence of Particle Production in nucleus-nucleus collisions at the CERN SPS
New preliminary results on kaon and pion production in central 30AGeV Pb+Pb
collisions are presented. The data are compared to data at lower and higher
energies to examine the energy dependence of the kaon to pion ratios and the
inverse slope parameters of kaons. The results are compared to expectations

Imagining stories: attitudes and operators
This essay argues that there are theoretical benefits to keeping distinct—more pervasively than the literature has done so far—the psychological states of imagining that p versus believing that in-the-story p, when it comes to cognition of fiction and other forms of narrative. Positing both in the minds of a story’s audience helps explain the full range of reactions characteristic of story consumption. This distinction also has interesting conceptual and explanatory dimensions that haven’t been carefully observed, and the two mental state types make distinct contributions to generating emotional responses to stories. Finally, the differences between the mental states illuminate how a given story can be both shared with others and at the same time experienced as personal
Bulk Viscosity of Interacting Hadrons
We show that first approximations to the bulk viscosity are
expressible in terms of factors that depend on the sound speed , the
enthalpy, and the interaction (elastic and inelastic) cross section. The
explicit dependence of on the factor is
demonstrated in the Chapman-Enskog approximation as well as the variational and
relaxation time approaches. The interesting feature of bulk viscosity is that
the dominant contributions at a given temperature arise from particles which
are neither extremely nonrelativistic nor extremely relativistic. Numerical

Comparing energy loss phenomenology
High-pT particle production is suppressed in heavy ion collisions due to
parton energy loss in dense QCD matter. Here we present a systematic comparison
of two different theoretical approximations to parton energy loss calculations:
the opacity expansion and the multiple-soft scattering approximation for the
simple case of a quark traversing a homogeneous piece of matter with fixed
length (the TECHQM 'brick problem'), with focus on the range of parameters that

Importance of Agro-food Industry for Small and Medium-sized Towns in EU Countries; An Inter-regional SAM Analysis
This paper examines the importance of the agro-food industry for the local economy of thirty selected small and medium-sized towns in the EU. Calculations are based on interregional SAM analysis, which were constructed for each town. On the whole, it can be said that the higher the degree of integration of the agro-food sector in the local economy, the larger its role for the rural town and its hinterland. In addition, the SAM analyses show the impact of a demand change in the agro-food sector located in one zone of the town on the other zone of the town. Skating on slippery ice
The friction of a stationary moving skate on smooth ice is investigated, in
particular in relation to the formation of a thin layer of water between skate
and ice. It is found that the combination of ploughing and sliding gives a
friction force that is rather insensitive for parameters such as velocity and
temperature. The weak dependence originates from the pressure adjustment inside
the water layer. For instance, high velocities, which would give rise to high
friction, also lead to large pressures, which, in turn, decrease the contact
zone and so lower the friction. The theory is a combination and completion of
