Self collimation of ultrasound in a 3D sonic crystal
We present the experimental demonstration of self-collimation (subdiffractive
propagation) of an ultrasonic beam inside a three-dimensional sonic crystal.
The crystal is formed by two crossed steel cylinders structures in a
woodpile-like geometry disposed in water. Measurements of the 3D field
distribution show that a narrow beam which diffractively spreads in the absence
of the sonic crystal is strongly collimated in propagation inside the crystal,
demonstrating the 3D self-collimation effect.Comment: 3 figures, submitted to Applied Physics Letter
Semiconductor cavity QED: Bandgap induced by vacuum fluctuations
We consider theoretically a semiconductor nanostructure embedded in
one-dimensional microcavity and study the modification of its electron energy
spectrum by the vacuum fluctuations of the electromagnetic field. To solve the
problem, a non-perturbative diagrammatic approach based on the Green's function
formalism is developed. It is shown that the interaction of the system with the
vacuum fluctuations of the optical cavity opens gaps within the valence band of
the semiconductor. The approach is verified for the case of large photon
occupation numbers, proving the validity of the model by comparing to previous
studies of the semiconductor system excited by a classical electromagnetic
field. The developed theory is of general character and allows for unification
of quantum and classical descriptions of the strong light-matter interaction in
semiconductor structures
Research study of droplet sizing technology leading to the development of an advanced droplet sizing system
An instrument to measure the size and velocity of droplets was developed. The instrument uses one of two techniques, as appropriate. In the first technique two small laser beams of one color identify the center of a larger laser beam of a different color. This defines a region of almost uniform intensity where the light scattered by the individual droplets can be related to their size. The first technique uses the visibility of a Doppler burst and validates it against the peak intensity of the signal's pedestal. Results are presented for monodisperse, bimodal, trimodal, and polydisperse sprays produced by the Berglund-Liu droplet generator and a pressure nozzle. Size distributions of a given spray obtained using three different size ranges show excellent self-consistency in the overlapping region. Measurements of sprays of known characteristics exhibit errors in the order of 10%. The principles of operation and design criteria of the instrument are discussed in great detail
Physical processes leading to surface inhomogeneities: the case of rotation
In this lecture I discuss the bulk surface heterogeneity of rotating stars,
namely gravity darkening. I especially detail the derivation of the omega-model
of Espinosa Lara & Rieutord (2011), which gives the gravity darkening in
early-type stars. I also discuss the problem of deriving gravity darkening in
stars owning a convective envelope and in those that are members of a binary
system.Comment: 23 pages, 11 figure, Lecture given to the school on the cartography

Self-pulsing dynamics of ultrasound in a magnetoacoustic resonator
A theoretical model of parametric magnetostrictive generator of ultrasound is
considered, taking into account magnetic and magnetoacoustic nonlinearities.
The stability and temporal dynamics of the system is analized with standard
techniques revealing that, for a given set of parameters, the model presents a
homoclinic or saddle--loop bifurcation, which predicts that the ultrasound is
emitted in the form of pulses or spikes with arbitrarily low frequency.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure
