FINITE ELEMENT MODELLING OF THE DAMAGE AND FAILURE IN FIBER REINFORCED COMPOSITES (OVERVIEW)
The failure and the analysis of composite structures can be various. The failure modes can be
investigated separately, but these modes generally arise together (e.g.: matrix cracking and
delamination). Due to this experimental observation the main problem is to construct models that can
follow more than one of the failure modes. To solve this problem the most
proper method is the finite
element method (FEM), because of its simplicity. The aim of this paper is to summarize a few
publications about the damage and failure of composite materials and structures. The publications
were grouped according to the mode of failure, the aim is to give a short description about the finite
element modelling of the given failure mode. The models were reconstructed using the finite element
code COSMOS/M
STRESS COMPUTATION ALGORITHM FOR TEMPERATURE DEPENDENT NON-LINEAR KINEMATIC HARDENING MODEL
In this work, we derive a stress algorithm for a non-linear kinematic hardening model. The
algorithm is implemented in a FEM code. On a simple shear test, we compare the
numerical results with the analytical ones
APPROXIMATE INTERLAMINAR FRACTURE ENVELOPES FOR UNIDIRECTIONAL E-GLASS/POLYESTER COMPOSITE
In this paper an experimental study is performed in order to determine an
approximate interlaminar fracture envelope of a unidirectional E-glass
polyester composite. First, the pure mode-I fracture toughness is determined
by using the standard double-cantilever beam (DCB) specimen. Second, the
pure mode-II toughness of the material is evaluated by means of the
over-notched flexure (ONF) specimen. Finally, the mixed-mode toughness is
determined with the aid of the over-leg bending (OLB) coupon. Both the
initiation and propagation fracture toughness are determined within the
extended ranges of crack length. The fracture envelopes are determined by
using the steady-state values of the fracture toughness at crack initiation
and propagation. Two criteria are used to obtain the envelopes: the
traditional power expression and the physically more acceptable criterion by
Williams. The results are compared with previous envelopes and similarity is
established
ANALYSIS OF THE INTERLAMINAR CRACK INITIATION IN MIXED-MODE I+II COMPOSITE FRACTURE SPECIMENS
The interlaminar crack initiation in mixed-mode specimens was
investigated through two- and three-dimensional finite element models.
Elastic analysis was conducted to understand the crack initiation in
glass-fibre/vinylester composites. The MMF and CLS specimens were used
for the two-dimensional plane strain models. Simplified 3D
micro-mechanical models
were constructed to investigate the effect of the fibres on the stress
distribution based on the square fibre arrangement. The mixed-mode
conditions were produced by changing the ratio of the crack opening and
crack shearing displacement components. It was concluded that the fibre/matrix
interface plays critical role in the direction of the crack propagation path.
The propagation path was described by the crack angle determined by the peak
stresses in the crack front and in the fibre/matrix interface. The critical
fibre/matrix interface stress was also determined and found to increase with the
mode-I contribution. The tensile stresses ahead of the crack-tip were examined
and experienced as increasing with the mode-I contribution
STABILITY OF ASYMMETRICALLY BUILT AND LOADED MULTI-LAYERED RECTANGULAR SANDWICH-TYPE PLATES (FEM SOLUTIONS)
The present report gives a review on the formulation of the mechanical/mathematical models of the
stability of asymmetrically built and loaded rectangular multi-layered sandwich-type plates with
(constructionally) orthotropic hard and transversally isotropic soft layers. The corresponding governing
equations, boundary conditions and method of numerical (FEM) solution are given. The report shows the
stability and post-buckling behaviour of asymmetrically compressed five-layered
rectangular plate with Navier-type boundary conditions
Kompozit anyagok törésmechanikai és dinamikai vizsgálata = Fracture mechanical and dynamical investigation of composite materials
A kutatás során a repedések, bemetszések kompozit anyagok mechanikai tulajdonságaira gyakorolt hatását vizsgáltuk. Törésmechanikai szempontból kifejlesztésre került egy olyan teszt, amely lehetővé teszi a vegyes I/III-as, II/III-as és I/II/III-as módusú rétegközi törés vizsgálatát. A kísérleti eredmények feldolgozásához analitikus modellek készültek, amelyek pontosságát végeselem modellek segítségével ellenőriztük. Megvizsgáltuk a III-as módusú repedésfeszítő erő függését a geometriai paraméterektől. A repedési folyamat stabilitásának vizsgálatára kidolgozásra került egy kísérleti alapú kritérium, amelyet számos próbatest típuson alkalmaztunk, illetve hasznosságát bemutattuk. Megépült a vegyes módusú hajlító próbatest befogója (mixed-mode bending), amelyet eredményesen alkalmaztunk kompozit próbatestekre. Elvégzésre került a repedéssel ellátott kompozit rudak rezgésmérése, amely során mérés alapján meghatároztuk a sajátfrekvenciákat és lengésképeket. Analitikus modellekkel kimutattuk, hogy zárt repedés esetén a rúd delaminált szakaszán periodikus erővel nyomott/húzott rudak rezgéseiről van szó. A Kirchhoff-féle lemezelmélet felhasználásával meghatároztuk a delaminált lemezekben ébredő rétegközi nyírófeszültségeket leíró differenciálegyenlet-rendszert és megoldottuk azt egy egyszerűen alátámasztott, rugalmas lemezre. Megmutattuk, hogy lemezek esetében a rezgés során szintén periodikus erővel húzott/nyomott lemezekről van szó. | In this research project the effect of cracks and delaminations on the mechanical properties of composite materials have been investigated. A novel fracture mechanical system has been developed which makes it possible to measure the mixed-mode I/III, II/III and I/II/III interlaminar fracture toughness of composites. To reduce the experimental data analytical models have been developed, their accuracy has been verified by finite element models. The influence of geometrical parameters on the mode-III energy release rate has been analyzed. A novel experiment-based criterion has been developed for the crack propagation in composite specimens, the criterion has been applied to several configurations, its applicability has been demonstrated. The rig of the mixed-mode bending specimen has been constructed, which has been successfully applied to composite coupons. We have performed the vibration analysis of delaminated composite beams, i.e. we have determined the eigenfrequencies and mode shapes of the beams. It has been shown by using analytical models that in the case of closed delamination in the cracked part, the beams are loaded by periodic tensile and compressive forces. Using the Kirchhoff plate theory the governing differential equations of the interlaminat shear stresses have been derived and solved for a simply-supported elastic plate. It has been highlighted that the vibration of delaminated plates the cracked part involves periodic tensile and compressive forces
Szálerősített kompozitok tönkremeneteli folyamatainak végeselemes modellezése = Finite Element Modelling of Failure Processes in Fiber Reinforced Composites
| This research was directed to the investigation of failure and damage processes in fibre reinforced polymer composites with special attentions for using finite element models. The theoretical, numerical and experimental methods were focused on the phenomena of de-lamination, of crack propagation, of critical force to crack opening, of determining the fracture toughness, of the role of fibre bridging in the crack opening process. Fracture mode I and mixed mode I/II were studied during crack opening. The theoretical investigations resulted new analytical models to represent the crack propagation. These models are based on Euler and Timoshenko beam theories and apply Winkler and Pasternak foundation models. To verify the analytical models, various form of specimens were applied in the experimental works. Polyester and epoxy resins were applied as matrix material, while glass fibres and carbon fibres were the reinforcing materials. A novel type of specimens, so called over-leg bending (OLB) specimen was developed to study the mixed-mode I/II crack opening behaviour. A novel method was also developed to study the fibre bridging phenomenon during crack propagation in UD fibre reinforced polymer composites

Az anyagtudomány és a mechanika szerepe az anyagok és szerkezetek élettartam növelésében = Role of material science and mechanics in lifetime extension of materials and components
A kutatómunka során kifejlesztett, pontosított rúdmodell esetén meghatározásra került a Pasternak-féle ágyazás rugómerevségét. A rúdmodell a középsíkban repedéssel ellátott kompozit rudak rugóállandójára ad pontosított képletet. A különféle korrekciók vagy a próbatest vastagság menti, vagy annak csúsztató rugalmassági moduluszától függnek. A Pasternak-féle rugók esetén a merevség inkább a vastagság menti modulusszal hozható kapcsolatba. A rugók merevségét kombinált végeselem-analitikus módszerrel lett kiszámolva. | Using the previously developed refined beam model the stiffnes of the Pasternak foundation was determined. The beam model provides an improved compliance expression for delaminated composite beams. The different corrections of the compliance and the strain energy release rate depend on the shear and transverse modulus of the material. It was shown that the Pasternak foundation can be related to the transverse modulus. The stiffness of the Pasternak foundation was determined by a combined analytical-finite element method. This was carried out by using a special DCB specimen of which shear modulus tended to infinity. This way those effetcs, which are related to the shear modulus can be eliminated. Then the value of a constant parameter was chosen in order to reach the best agreement with the finite element model. The computation was performed even for high and low modulus glass and carbon fiber reinforced materials and it was found that the chosen value of the constant satisfies all the cases studied. Using the Pasternak foundation stiffness the global mode decomposition method was improved. The advantages of the method are that it is accurate and easy to apply
