    The Effect of Financial Resources on Fertility: Evidence from Administrative Data on Lottery Winners

    This paper utilizes wealth shocks from winning lottery prizes to examine the effect of financial resources on fertility. Using administrative data on Taiwanese lottery winners and a difference-in-differences design, we compare the trend in fertility between households receiving lottery prizes of more than 1 million NT(33,000US (33,000 US) with those winning less than 10,000 NT(330US (330 US). The results show that the receipt of a big lottery prize significantly increases fertility, and effects are driven by households with less financial resources. Moreover, big lottery wins mainly trigger childless households to have children and induce people to get married earlier

    Exploring the effect of AR filter on perceived brand image: The mediating role of realistic experience

    Following its extensive application in study on consumers\u27 retail experience, AR (augmented reality) technology has been increasingly applied in social media, notably the AR filter service, which has been embraced by quite a few brands as a novel marketing tool, taking advantage of its entertaining value and dissemination effect to boost brands\u27 perceived image among consumers. However, there have been fewer studies that examine the effectiveness of brand-developed AR filter services in enhancing consumer perceptions of brand image in the context of social media. To bridge the research gap, the study, based on the S-O-R model, looked into the effect of consumers\u27 cognition of AR-filter features on the realism of their experience and thus their perceived brand image. The study was carried out via a questionnaire survey of users of AR filters developed by brand-developed in social media, with its findings having both academic and practical implications for this field

    DISTRIBUTION OF GRIP PRESSURE THROUGHOUT THE PHASES OF PUTTING IN ELITE GOLF COLLEGE PLAYERS

    The purpose of this study is to investigate the distribution of grip pressure, force and the peak pressure of different phases during the putting stroke. Five elite college players with handicaps of 2-8 participated in the study. The Novel Pliance-x System and 150Hz 8- camera Motion Analysis Corporation System were used to collect grip pressure and identify each phase of the putting stroke. At each phase of the putting stroke, average grip pressure, peak pressure and grip force were investigated. Results indicated that lowest grip pressure occurred at address up to the top of backswing (2.41±1.36 Kpa). Grip pressure started to increase during the downswing and reached its peak, 0.02±0.05s, before impact (4.70±1.97 Kpa). The pressure reduced again after impact (4.36±2.06 Kpa). Results indicate that grip pressure does not remain the same throughout the stroke

    AVATAR: Robust Voice Search Engine Leveraging Autoregressive Document Retrieval and Contrastive Learning

    Voice, as input, has progressively become popular on mobiles and seems to transcend almost entirely text input. Through voice, the voice search (VS) system can provide a more natural way to meet user's information needs. However, errors from the automatic speech recognition (ASR) system can be catastrophic to the VS system. Building on the recent advanced lightweight autoregressive retrieval model, which has the potential to be deployed on mobiles, leading to a more secure and personal VS assistant. This paper presents a novel study of VS leveraging autoregressive retrieval and tackles the crucial problems facing VS, viz. the performance drop caused by ASR noise, via data augmentations and contrastive learning, showing how explicit and implicit modeling the noise patterns can alleviate the problems. A series of experiments conducted on the Open-Domain Question Answering (ODSQA) confirm our approach's effectiveness and robustness in relation to some strong baseline systems

    Knowledge-Enriched Visual Storytelling

    Stories are diverse and highly personalized, resulting in a large possible output space for story generation. Existing end-to-end approaches produce monotonous stories because they are limited to the vocabulary and knowledge in a single training dataset. This paper introduces KG-Story, a three-stage framework that allows the story generation model to take advantage of external Knowledge Graphs to produce interesting stories. KG-Story distills a set of representative words from the input prompts, enriches the word set by using external knowledge graphs, and finally generates stories based on the enriched word set. This distill-enrich-generate framework allows the use of external resources not only for the enrichment phase, but also for the distillation and generation phases. In this paper, we show the superiority of KG-Story for visual storytelling, where the input prompt is a sequence of five photos and the output is a short story. Per the human ranking evaluation, stories generated by KG-Story are on average ranked better than that of the state-of-the-art systems.     First measurement of anti-kT_\mathrm{T} jet spectra and jet substructure using the archived ALEPH e+ee^+e^- data at 91.2 GeV

    We present the first anti-kT_{T} jet spectrum and substructure measurements using the archived ALEPH e+ee^+e^- data taken in 1994 at a center of mass energy of s=91.2\sqrt{s} = 91.2 GeV. Jets are reconstructed with the anti-kT_{T} algorithm with a resolution parameter of 0.4. It is the cleanest test of jets and QCD without the complication of hadronic initial states. The fixed center-of-mass energy also allows the first direct test of pQCD calculation. We present both the inclusive jet energy spectrum and the leading dijet energy spectra, together with a number of substructure observables. They are compared to predictions from PYTHIA6, PYTHIA8, Sherpa, HERWIG, VINCIA, and PYQUEN. None of the models fully reproduce the data. The data are also compared to two perturbative QCD calculations at NLO and with NLL'+R resummation. The results can also serve as reference measurements to compare to results from hadronic colliders. Future directions, including testing jet clustering algorithms designed for future electron-ion collider experiments, will also be discussed

    Production of Active Nonglycosylated Recombinant B-Chain of Type-2 Ribosome-Inactivating Protein from Viscum articulatum and Its Biological Effects on Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells

    Type-2 ribosome-inactivating proteins, composed of a toxic A-chain and lectin-like B-chain, display various biological functions, including cytotoxicity and immunomodulation. We here cloned the lectin-like B-chain encoding fragment of a newly identified type-2 RIP gene, articulatin gene, from Viscum articulatum, into a bacterial expression vector to obtain nonglycosylated recombinant protein expressed in inclusion bodies. After purification and protein refolding, soluble refolded recombinant articulatin B-chain (rATB) showed lectin activity specific toward galactoside moiety and was stably maintained while stored in low ionic strength solution. Despite lacking glycosylation, rATB actively bound leukocytes with preferential binding to monocytes and in vitro stimulated PBMCs to release cytokines without obvious cytotoxicity. These results implicated such a B-chain fragment as a potential immunomodulator
