Panel manipulation in social stress testing: The Bath Experimental Stress Test for Children (BEST-C).
BACKGROUND: Whilst acute stress paradigms in adults make use of adult panel members, similar paradigms modified for child participants have not manipulated the panel. Most work has utilised an audience of adult confederates, regardless of the age of the population being tested. The aim of this study was to trial a social stress test for children that provided a meaningful environment using age-matched child peers as panel actors. METHODS: Thirty-three participants (7-11 years) underwent the Bath Experimental Stress Test for Children (BEST-C). Based on the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST), it comprises a shortened six-minute public speaking task and four-minute maths challenge. It differs from previous stress tests by using age-matched children on the panel, pre-recorded and presented as a live feed, and includes an expanded manipulation check of subjective experience. Salivary cortisol was assessed at four time points, pre-post stress testing; life events, daily hassles and coping strategies were measured through questionnaires. A simple numerical coding scheme was applied to post-test interview data. RESULTS: The BEST-C generated a typical stress and adaptation response in salivary cortisol (p=.032). Age and gender differences were observed during recovery. Cortisol responses mapped directly onto three distinct subjective response patterns: (i) expected response and recovery; (ii) expected response, no recovery; (iii) no response. CONCLUSIONS: The BEST-C, utilising child confederates of participant target age is a meaningful social stress test for children. This is the first social stress test developed specifically for children that manipulates panel characteristics by using child confederates and a pre-recorded sham panel. Greater cortisol responses to the test were also found to match subjective verbal accounts of the experience. It offers a meaningful acute stress paradigm with potential applications to other child and adolescent age groups. Furthermore, it leads the way in the use of panel manipulation in social stress testing
The PL calibration for Milky Way Cepheids and its implications for the distance scale
The rationale behind recent calibrations of the Cepheid PL relation using the
Wesenheit formulation is reviewed and reanalyzed, and it is shown that recent
conclusions regarding a possible change in slope of the PL relation for
short-period and long-period Cepheids are tied to a pathological distribution
of HST calibrators within the instability strip. A recalibration of the
period-luminosity relation is obtained using Galactic Cepheids in open clusters
and groups, the resulting relationship, described by log L/L_sun =
2.415(+-0.035) + 1.148(+-0.044)log P, exhibiting only the moderate scatter
expected from color spread within the instability strip. The relationship is
confirmed by Cepheids with HST parallaxes, although without the need for
Lutz-Kelker corrections, and in general by Cepheids with revised Hipparcos
parallaxes, albeit with concerns about the cited precisions of the latter. A
Wesenheit formulation of Wv = -2.259(+-0.083) - 4.185(+-0.103)log P for
Galactic Cepheids is tested successfully using Cepheids in the inner regions of
the galaxy NGC 4258, confirming the independent geometrical distance
established for the galaxy from OH masers. Differences between the extinction
properties of interstellar and extragalactic dust may yet play an important
role in the further calibration of the Cepheid PL relation and its application

X-Ray Spectral Study of AGN Sources Content in Some Deep Extragalactic XMM-Newton Fields
We undertake a spectral study of a sample of bright X-ray sources taken from
six XMM-Newton fields at high galactic latitudes, where AGN are the most
populous class. These six fields were chosen such that the observation had an
exposure time more than 60 ksec, had data from the EPIC-pn detector in the
full-Frame mode and lying at high galactic latitude . The analysis
started by fitting the spectra of all sources with an absorbed power-law model,
and then we fitted all the spectra with an absorbed power-law with a low energy
black-body component model.The sources for which we added a black body gave an
F-test probability of 0.01 or less (i.e. at 99% confidence level), were
recognized as sources that display soft excess. We perform a comparative
analysis of soft excess spectral parameters with respect to the underlying
power-law one for sources that satisfy this criterion. Those sources, that do
not show evidence for a soft excess, based on the F-test probability at a 99%
confidence level, were also fitted with the absorbed power-law with a low
energy black-body component model with the black-body temperature fixed at 0.1
and 0.2 keV. We establish upper limits on the soft excess flux for those
sources at these two temperatures. Finally we have made use of Aladdin
interactive sky atlas and matching with NASA/IPAC Extragalactic Database (NED)
to identify the X-ray sources in our sample. For those sources which are
identified in the NED catalogue, we make a comparative study of the soft excess
phenomenon for different types of systems
Communication and trust in the bounded confidence model
The communication process in a situation of emergency is discussed within the
Scheff theory of shame and pride. The communication involves messages from
media and from other persons. Three strategies are considered: selfish (to
contact friends), collective (to join other people) and passive (to do
nothing). We show that the pure selfish strategy cannot be evolutionarily
stable. The main result is that the community structure is statistically

Capture of aqueous radioiodine species by metallated adsorbents from wastestreams of the nuclear power industry : a review
Iodine-129 poses a significant challenge in the drive towards lowering radionuclide emissions from used nuclear fuel recycling operations. Various techniques are employed for capture of gaseous iodine species, but it is also present, mainly as iodide anions, in problematic residual aqueous wastestreams, which have stimulated research interest in technologies for adsorption and retention of the radioiodine. This removal effort requires specialised adsorbents, which use soft metals to create selectivity in the challenging chemical conditions. A review of the literature, at laboratory scale, reveals a number of organic, inorganic and hybrid adsorbent matrices have been investigated for this purpose. They are functionalised principally by Ag metal, but also Bi, Cu and Pb, using numerous synthetic strategies. The iodide capacity of the adsorbents varies from 13 to 430 mg g−1, with ion-exchange resins and titanates displaying the highest maximum uptakes. Kinetics of adsorption are often slow, requiring several days to reach equilibrium, although some ligated metal ion and metal nanoparticle systems can equilibrate in < 1 h. Ag-loaded materials generally exhibit superior selectivity for iodide verses other common anions, but more consideration is required of how these materials would function successfully in industrial operation; specifically their performance in dynamic column experiments and stability of the bound radioiodine in the conversion to final wasteform and subsequent geological storage
The Detectability of Departures from the Inflationary Consistency Equation
We study the detectability, given CMB polarization maps, of departures from
the inflationary consistency equation, r \equiv T/S \simeq -5 n_T, where T and
S are the tensor and scalar contributions to the quadrupole variance,
respectively. The consistency equation holds if inflation is driven by a
slowly-rolling scalar field. Departures can be caused by: 1) higher-order terms
in the expansion in slow-roll parameters, 2) quantum loop corrections or 3)
multiple fields. Higher-order corrections in the first two slow-roll parameters
are undetectably small. Loop corrections are detectable if they are nearly
maximal and r \ga 0.1. Large departures (|\Delta n_T| \ga 0.1) can be seen if r
\ga 0.001. High angular resolution can be important for detecting non-zero

Cosmological Effects of Radion Oscillations
We show that the redshift of pressureless matter density due to the expansion
of the universe generically induces small oscillations in the stabilized radius
of extra dimensions (the radion field). The frequency of these oscillations is
proportional to the mass of the radion and can have interesting cosmological
consequences. For very low radion masses () these low frequency oscillations lead to oscillations in
the expansion rate of the universe. The occurrence of acceleration periods
could naturally lead to a resolution of the coincidence problem, without need
of dark energy. Even though this scenario for low radion mass is consistent
with several observational tests it has difficulty to meet fifth force
constraints. If viewed as an effective Brans-Dicke theory it predicts
( is the number of extra dimensions), while
experiments on scales larger than imply . By deriving the
generalized Newtonian potential corresponding to a massive toroidally compact
radion we demonstrate that Newtonian gravity is modified only on scales smaller
than . Thus, these constraints do not apply for
(high frequency oscillations) corresponding to scales less than the current
experiments (). Even though these high frequency oscillations can not
resolve the coincidence problem they provide a natural mechanism for dark
matter generation. This type of dark matter has many similarities with the

The effects of an experimental programme to support students’ autonomy on the overt behaviours of physical education teachers
Although the benefits of autonomy supportive behaviours are now well established in the literature, very few studies have attempted to train teachers to offer a greater autonomy support to their students. In fact, none of these studies has been carried out in physical education (PE). The purpose of this study is to test the effects of an autonomy-supportive training on overt behaviours of teaching among PE teachers. The experimental group included two PE teachers who were first educated on the benefits of an autonomy supportive style and then followed an individualised guidance programme during the 8 lessons of a teaching cycle. Their behaviours were observed and rated along 3 categories (i.e., autonomy supportive, neutral and controlling) and were subsequently compared to those of three teachers who formed the control condition. The results showed that teachers in the experimental group used more autonomy supportive and neutral behaviours than those in the control group, but no difference emerged in relation to controlling behaviours.
