Synchronous adrenal metastasis and an inferior vena cava tumor thrombus from an ovarian carcinoma
A 60-year-old woman presented with synchronous adrenal metastasis and an inferior vena cava tumor thrombus in the adrenal vein that developed from an ovarian carcinoma. The patient underwent total abdominal hysterectomy, bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, and right adrenalectomy with caval tumor thrombectomy for treatment. Microscopic examination revealed a clear cell ovarian carcinoma and a metastatic adrenal tumor. The patient is clinically free of disease after 6 years of follow-up. There have been no reports of synchronous adrenal metastasis with an inferior vena cava thrombus that developed from an ovarian carcinoma. As several reports have described the long-term survival after adrenalectomy for the treatment of isolated adrenal metastasis, clinicians should be aware of this potential occurrence so that patients can be appropriately treated
Perfusion CT image of pulmonary thromboembolism: data acquisition using single-detector helical CT scanner
AbstractWe report a case of pulmonary thromboembolism, in which we used conventional single-detector helical CT scanner to obtain dynamic CT data, and the decrease in pulmonary parenchymal perfusion was clearly demonstrated on perfusion CT image
Incidental discovery of circle contact lens by MRI: you can’t scan my poker face, circle contact lens as a potential MRI hazard
BACKGROUND: Circle contact lenses, also known as color contact lenses and big eye contact lenses, are a type of cosmetic contact lens. It is not generally known that a circle contact lens usually contains iron oxide and other metals, which means their use during magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a potential hazard. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a rare case of incidental discovery of circle contact lenses by MRI and MRI images of circle lenses in vitro. CONCLUSIONS: Circle contact lenses usually contain iron oxide, which is a known source of susceptibility artifact on MRI. Not only radiologists and radiographers but also referring physicians should be familiar with the imaging findings and potential risk of scanning circle contact lenses by MRI
Detection of vascular endothelial growth factor in colon cancer xenografts using bevacizumab based near infrared fluorophore conjugate.
BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to develop the near infrared fluorescence (NIRF)-based imaging agent for the visualization of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in colon cancer. AlexaFluor 750 conjugating with bevacizumab, and injected intravenously into nude mice bearing VEGF over-expressing HT29 human colorectal cancer. Optical imaging was performed at 15 min, 24 h and 48 h post injection. Immunofluorescences staining of the tumor sections were performed. HT29 colorectal cancer xenografts were clearly visualized with bevacizumab-AlexaFluor 750.
RESULTS: Ex vivo analysis showed 2.1 ± 0.4%, 37.6 ± 6.3% and 38.5 ± 6.2% injected dose/g accumulated in the tumors at 15 min, 24 h and 48 h respectively. Tumor uptake was significantly decreased in pretreated with excess of bevacizumab (p = 0.002). Immunofluorescence analysis showed strong staining of anti-CD 31 antibody around the blood vessels. Anti-VEGF-A and bevacizumab showed heterogeneous expression throughout the tumor.
CONCLUSIONS: Current study successfully detected the VEGF expression in HT29 colorectal cancer xenografts, signifying as a potential agent for non-invasive imaging of VEGF expression, which may be applied in clinical practice
Effects of using the computer-based training program, DAAGS, on the ability of students to assess periodontal health status in a program for school nurses
In this study, students in a program for school nurses underwent twice with a three-week interval thecomputer-based training program, Development of Ability to Assess Gingival Status (DAAGS),to see ifthere would be any change in their scores on the assessment of periodontal status.A questionnairesurvey was also conducted about the usefulness of DAAGSfor dental health education. As a result, students'scores showed an improvement in every one of the assessment indicators ofPeriodontal Health Status (correct answers, reproducibility and irrelevant answers), suggesting thattraining by means of DAAGSincreased their ability to assess periodontal status. Furthermore, the resultsof the questionnaire survey included such positive responses as “Would like to put [DAAGS] to use in thehealth care of the gums"and “Would like to make good use of [DAAGS] at school in the future",indicating the usefulness of DAAGSfor the dental health education of students
Successful Interventional Management for Pulmonary Arterial Injury Secondary to Pacemaker Implantation
Subclavian vein puncture is a relatively fast and safe technique to access the right heart for placement of pacemaker leads. Hemothorax related to injury of the pulmonary artery (PA) is a rare complication of subclavian vein access but can be life-threatening. We report a case of hemothorax occurring after subclavian vein puncture for pacemaker implantation. No cases of transcatheter arterial embolization for PA injury secondary to pacemaker implantation have been reported. Understanding of this rare complication after pacemaker implantation along with its specific clinical presentation may lead to early diagnosis and intervention
