Star tracking reticles
A method for the production of reticles, particularly those for use in outer space, where the product is a quartz base coated with highly adherent layers of chromium, chromium-silver, and silver vacuum deposited through a mask, and then coated with an electrodeposit of copper from a copper sulfate solution followed by an electrodeposit of black chromium is described. The masks are produced by coating a beryllium-copper alloy substrate with a positive working photoresist, developing the photoresist, according to a pattern to leave a positive mask, plating uncoated areas with gold, removing the photoresist, coating the substrate with a negative working photoresist, developing the negative working photoresist to expose the base metal of the pattern, and chemically etching the unplated side of the pattern to produce the mask
Formation of star tracking reticles
The present application is directed towards a process for producing high resolution, substantially non-reflective reticles or choppers suitable for use for transmitting in both the visible and near ultra-violet regions, able to withstand reasonable handling and extreme environmental conditions, and capable of operating at speeds of from 2800 to about 9000 revolutions per minute without distortion. In particular, the present invention is directed towards the production or reticles having a quartz base vacuum coated with chromium, chromium-silver alloy, and silver with electrodeposited copper and black chromium thereon, respectively, in the form of a reticle pattern. The quartz permits the transmission of light while the pattern is opaque to light. The reticles of the present invention are intended for use in optical trackers, such as star trackers used in outer space
Thomassen's Choosability Argument Revisited
Thomassen (1994) proved that every planar graph is 5-choosable. This result
was generalised by {\v{S}}krekovski (1998) and He et al. (2008), who proved
that every -minor-free graph is 5-choosable. Both proofs rely on the
characterisation of -minor-free graphs due to Wagner (1937). This paper
proves the same result without using Wagner's structure theorem or even planar
embeddings. Given that there is no structure theorem for graphs with no
-minor, we argue that this proof suggests a possible approach for
attacking the Hadwiger Conjecture
FGF/heparin differentially regulates Schwann cell and olfactory ensheathing cell interactions with astrocytes: a role in astrocytosis
After injury, the CNS undergoes an astrocyte stress response characterized by reactive astrocytosis/proliferation, boundary formation, and increased glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) and chondroitin sulfate proteoglycan (CSPG) expression. Previously, we showed that in vitro astrocytes exhibit this stress response when in contact with Schwann cells but not olfactory ensheathing cells (OECs). In this study, we confirm this finding in vivo by demonstrating that astrocytes mingle with OECs but not Schwann cells after injection into normal spinal cord. We show that Schwann cell-conditioned media (SCM) induces proliferation in monocultures of astrocytes and increases CSPG expression in a fibroblast growth factor receptor 1 (FGFR1)-independent manner. However, SCM added to OEC/astrocyte cocultures induces reactive astrocytosis and boundary formation, which, although sensitive to FGFR1 inhibition, was not induced by FGF2 alone. Addition of heparin to OEC/astrocyte cultures induces boundary formation, whereas heparinase or chlorate treatment of Schwann cell/astrocyte cultures reduces it, suggesting that heparan sulfate proteoglycans (HSPGs) are modulating this activity. In vivo, FGF2 and FGFR1 immunoreactivity was increased over grafted OECs and Schwann cells compared with the surrounding tissue, and HSPG immunoreactivity is increased over reactive astrocytes bordering the Schwann cell graft. These data suggest that components of the astrocyte stress response, including boundary formation, astrocyte hypertrophy, and GFAP expression, are mediated by an FGF family member, whereas proliferation and CSPG expression are not. Furthermore, after cell transplantation, HSPGs may be important for mediating the stress response in astrocytes via FGF2. Identification of factors secreted by Schwann cells that induce this negative response in astrocytes would further our ability to manipulate the inhibitory environment induced after injury to promote regeneration

Probing The Dust-To-Gas Ratio of z > 0 Galaxies Through Gravitational Lenses
We report the detection of differential gas column densities in three
gravitational lenses, MG0414+0534, HE1104-1805, and PKS1830-211. Combined with
the previous differential column density measurements in B1600+434 and
Q2237+0305 and the differential extinction measurements of these lenses, we
probe the dust-to-gas ratio of a small sample of cosmologically distant normal
galaxies. We obtain an average dust-to-gas ratio of E(B-V)/NH =(1.4\pm0.5) e-22
mag cm^2/atoms with an estimated intrinsic dispersion in the ratio of ~40%.
This average dust-to-gas ratio is consistent with the average Galactic value of
1.7e-22 mag cm^2/atoms and the estimated intrinsic dispersion is also
consistent with the 30% observed in the Galaxy.Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures, Accepted by Ap
Structure and star formation in galaxies out to z=3: evidence for surface density dependent evolution and upsizing
We present an analysis of galaxies in the CDF-South. We find a tight relation
to z=3 between color and size at a given mass, with red galaxies being small,
and blue galaxies being large. We show that the relation is driven by stellar
surface density or inferred velocity dispersion: galaxies with high surface
density are red and have low specific star formation rates, and galaxies with
low surface density are blue and have high specific star formation rates.
Surface density and inferred velocity dispersion are better correlated with
specific star formation rate and color than stellar mass. Hence stellar mass by
itself is not a good predictor of the star formation history of galaxies. In
general, galaxies at a given surface density have higher specific star
formation rates at higher redshift. Specifically, galaxies with a surface
density of 1-3 10^9 Msun/kpc^2 are "red and dead" at low redshift,
approximately 50% are forming stars at z=1, and almost all are forming stars by
z=2. This provides direct additional evidence for the late evolution of
galaxies onto the red sequence. The sizes of galaxies at a given mass evolve
like 1/(1+z)^(0.59 +- 0.10). Hence galaxies undergo significant upsizing in
their history. The size evolution is fastest for the highest mass galaxies, and
quiescent galaxies. The persistence of the structural relations from z=0 to
z=2.5, and the upsizing of galaxies imply that a relation analogous to the
Hubble sequence exists out to z=2.5, and possibly beyond. The star forming
galaxies at z >= 1.5 are quite different from star forming galaxies at z=0, as
they have likely very high gas fractions, and star formation time scales

Phonon-induced quadrupolar ordering of the magnetic superconductor TmNiBC
We present synchrotron x-ray diffraction studies revealing that the lattice
of thulium borocarbide is distorted below T_Q = 13.5 K at zero field. T_Q
increases and the amplitude of the displacements is drastically enhanced, by a
factor of 10 at 60 kOe, when a magnetic field is applied along [100]. The
distortion occurs at the same wave vector as the antiferromagnetic ordering
induced by the a-axis field. A model is presented that accounts for the
properties of the quadrupolar phase and explains the peculiar behavior of the
antiferromagnetic ordering previously observed in this compound.Comment: submitted to PR
