Evidence for Quark-Hadron Duality in the Proton Spin Asymmetry A_1
Spin-dependent lepton-nucleon scattering data have been used to investigate the validity of the concept of quark-hadron duality for the spin asymmetry A_1. Longitudinally polarized positrons were scattered off a longitudinally polarized hydrogen target for values of Q^2 between 1.2 and 12  GeV^2 and values of W^2 between 1 and 4  GeV^2. The average double-spin asymmetry in the nucleon resonance region is found to agree with that measured in deep-inelastic scattering at the same values of the Bjorken scaling variable x. This finding implies that the description of A_1 in terms of quark degrees of freedom is valid also in the nucleon resonance region for values of Q^2 above 1.6  GeV^2
Single-spin azimuthal asymmetries in electroproduction of neutral pions in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering
A single-spin asymmetry in the azimuthal distribution of neutral pions relative to the lepton scattering plane has been measured for the first time in deep-inelastic scattering of positrons off longitudinally polarized protons. The analyzing power in the sinφ moment of the cross section is 0.019±0.007(stat)±0.003(syst). This result is compared to single-spin asymmetries for charged pion production measured in the same kinematic range. The π^0 asymmetry is of the same size as the π^+ asymmetry and shows a similar dependence on the relevant kinematic variables. The asymmetry is described by a phenomenological calculation based on a fragmentation function that represents sensitivity to the transverse polarization of the struck quark
Measurement of the Beam-Spin Azimuthal Asymmetry Associated with Deeply-Virtual Compton Scattering
The beam-spin asymmetry in hard electroproduction of photons has been measured. The data have been accumulated by the HERMES experiment at DESY using the HERA 27.6 GeV longitudinally polarized positron beam and an unpolarized hydrogen-gas target. The asymmetry in the azimuthal distribution of the produced photons in the angle φ relative to the lepton scattering plane was determined with respect to the helicity state of the incoming positron beam. The beam-spin analyzing power in the sinφ moment was measured to be -0.23±0.04(stat)±0.03(syst) in the missing-mass range below 1.7 GeV. The observed asymmetry is attributed to the interference of the Bethe-Heitler and deeply virtual Compton scattering processes
Nembi discourse structure
This thesis deals with the way paragraphs, sentences, and clauses are brought together in Nembi discourse to form a coherent unit. Insights into discourse structure and discourse analysis gained from Joseph Grimes, Robert E. Longacre, and Michael A. K. Halliday are applied in the study of Nembi narrative and procedural texts. The thesis is based on the analysis of fourteen texts: four procedural and ten narrative. Six of the narratives are ancestral legends, and four are based on recent events. The analysis has led to several conclusions about discourse in the Nembi language.
Discourse is organized into an introduction, a body, and a closure. The introduction, which consists of only one paragraph, establishes the setting, names the topic, and identifies the main participants. The body of the discourse is made up of one or more paragraphs that develop the topic. In the body there are two sequences of action going on simultaneously, one giving primary information, and the other giving secondary or background information. The closure consists of one paragraph which brings the discourse to a proper conclusion.
The phenomena that work together to give cohesion to Nembi discourse are linkage and chaining. Linkage is an anaphoric relationship in that it repeats information that was given previously in the text. Chaining is a type of cataphoric relationship in that it predicts whether the next clause will have the same or a different subject.
The four paragraph types are opening, closing, sequential, and consequential. Sequential paragraphs relate a series of events. A cause-effect relationship may be implied, but none is asserted. Consequential paragraphs assert a cause-effect relationship between the primary information and the secondary information.
The two basic sentence types are verbal and nonverbal. Sentences may be conjoined to other sentences.
Halliday\u27s notion of systemic grammar is useful for explaining the Nembi clause system. A chart is developed illustrating the choices available to a speaker when he produces a clause. He must choose to produce either an independent or dependent clause. If he chooses to produce a dependent clause, he must choose between adjunct and medial clauses. If he chooses a medial clause, he must then choose between chronological, durative, resultative, or purposive clauses
Rational Drug Design Directed at Blocking the Initial Signaling Events in Lipopolysaccharide-Induced Sepsis.
Systemic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (SIRS) is classified as an immune system response to an infectious state. If left untreated, SIRS leads to sepsis, septic shock, end-organ dysfunction, and death. As a patient progresses through these stages, associations of acute respiratory distress, disseminated intravascular coagulation, and acute renal failure persist, resulting in millions of deaths annually. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS), a bacterial endotoxin, is released into the blood stream, triggering SIRS. LPS is found in the outer cell-wall of Gram-negative bacteria and is responsible for initiation of a devastating cytokine storm. One of the regions of LPS, lipid A, is a polyacylated glucosamine disaccharide that is primarily responsible for the pathological response of the immune system. LPS interacts with a plasma-LPS binding protein (LBP) via the lipid A region. LPS-LBP signals the CD14 receptor found on phagocytes and Toll-like receptors (TLR4), which results in a signaling pathway for inflammatory molecules like cytokines, TNFα, among numerous others. Antibiotic treatments alone prove insufficient; with numerous research data indicating increased bacterial resistance.
It has been demonstrated that compounds resembling the lipid A region can act as antagonist to LPS signaling and would de-activate the inflammatory cascade. Blocking this cascade of events, in conjunction with other known sepsis treatments, would prove beneficial to patient prognoses. Lipid A analogues have been developed which are antagonists of LPS signaling and do not activate the inflammatory cascade. The most interesting antagonistsare the monosaccharides, which demonstrate that the glucosamine nitrogen can be replaced by oxygen and acyl groups can be replaced by more robust ethers

In today's world where media convergence and globalization are exponentially growing, America's status as a dominant world power has caused its culture to spread across the globe. Thanks to this country, English has become the language of international communication and trade. Many non-Anglophones strive to learn the language, and those who don't are still familiar with basic phrases. Countless countries have been exposed to this Americanization, and several have consequently developed negative views of the country due to its political actions and increasing invasion of their societies. Despite the efforts of other cultures to adapt to Anglophone domination, the average American knows relatively little about the outside world, and stereotypes are frequently the extent of foreign cultural knowledge. This situation has caused me to see a devaluation and blurring of the American culture and has made me question how to define cultural identity, especially my own. Through an interactive digital compilation of my experiences in France and Quebec, I explore various aspects of francophone culture and discover the impact it has on my identity.Thesis (B.?.)Honors Colleg
Response maxima in time-modulated turbulence: Direct Numerical Simulations
The response of turbulent flow to time-modulated forcing is studied by direct
numerical simulations of the Navier-Stokes equations. The large-scale forcing
is modulated via periodic energy input variations at frequency . The
response is maximal for frequencies in the range of the inverse of the large
eddy turnover time, confirming the mean-field predictions of von der Heydt,
Grossmann and Lohse (Phys. Rev. E 67, 046308 (2003)). In accordance with the
theory the response maximum shows only a small dependence on the Reynolds
number and is also quite insensitive to the particular flow-quantity that is
monitored, e.g., kinetic energy, dissipation-rate, or Taylor-Reynolds number.
At sufficiently high frequencies the amplitude of the kinetic energy response
decreases as . For frequencies beyond the range of maximal response,
a significant change in phase-shift relative to the time-modulated forcing is
observed.Comment: submitted to Europhysics Letters (EPL), 8 pages, 8 Postscript

High Sensitivity Search for v_e’s from the Sun and Other Sources at KamLAND
Data corresponding to a KamLAND detector exposure of 0.28 kton yr has been used to search for ν̅ _e’s in the energy range 8.3 < E_(ν̅e) < 14.8  MeV. No candidates were found for an expected background of 1.1±0.4 events. This result can be used to obtain a limit on ν̅_e fluxes of any origin. Assuming that all ν̅_e flux has its origin in the Sun and has the characteristic ^8B solar ν_e energy spectrum, we obtain an upper limit of 3.7×10^2  cm^(-2) ^(s-1) (90% C.L.) on the ν̅_e flux. We interpret this limit, corresponding to 2.8×10^(-4) of the standard solar model ^8B ν_e flux, in the framework of spin-flavor precession and neutrino decay models
Improving muscle mass: response of muscle metabolism to exercise, nutrition and anabolic agents
Muscle mass is critical for athletic performance and, perhaps more importantly for most, health and survival. The metabolic basis for a change in muscle mass is an increase in net muscle protein balance (termed NBAL). NBAL is the difference between MPS (muscle protein synthesis) and MPB (muscle protein breakdown). Thus an increase in MPS and/or a decrease in MPB are necessary for NBAL to increase, leading to accretion of muscle proteins. In particular, accretion of myofibrillar proteins is necessary. NBAL responds to exercise, feeding and other factors. In healthy, weight-stable adults, muscle mass remains constant because periods of positive balance following feeding are countered by periods of negative balance during fasting. A combination of resistance exercise and nutrition is a potent anabolic stimulus through stimulation of MPS from amino acids and attenuation of MPB by carbohydrates. Increased muscle mass results from the accumulation of small amounts of protein in response to each bout of exercise combined with nutrient intake. The magnitude of the response may be influenced by factors other than just the amount of a nutrient ingested. Timing of ingestion, co-ingestion of nutrients and the type of protein may all influence protein accretion. Testosterone is a potent anabolic stimulus primarily through improvement in re-utilization of amino acids from MPB. There is a general lack of efficacy in studies assessing the potential for growth hormone, androstenedione and dehydroepiandrostenedione to increase muscle mass. Creatine supplementation is clearly an effective means to increase muscle mass, especially in combination with resistance exercise, however the mechanisms remain unclear. Results from acute metabolic studies provide useful information for estimation of the efficacy of anabolic agents
