Social Emotional Learning: A Multi-Tiered School Counseling Approach
The authors explore the importance of social and emotional learning (SEL) at the elementary school level. A review of the literature on the short term and long term benefits of SEL in schools and a description of the competencies of SEL programming: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision making, is provided. The authors propose a three-tier comprehensive prevention and intervention model of SEL instruction, intervention, and progress monitoring that involves elementary school counselors, staff, parents, and community stakeholders to provide students with essential skills to be utilized throughout secondary and post-secondary education
Physical Science Day: Design, Implementation, and Assessment
Physical Science Day at The University of Texas–Pan American (UTPA), in collaboration with the Edinburg Consolidated Independent School District, has been designed, developed and implemented to address an identified fundamental shortcoming in our educational process within this primarily (90+%) Hispanic serving border region. Physical Science Day overcomes the lack of knowledge about what physics is by raising youth awareness of physics as the foundation of science, engineering and technology disciplines, through activities including hands-on laboratory experiments, career orientation, and higher educational student and graduated student testimonials. Thus, Physical Science Day encourages, attracts, and enables more Hispanic youth towards science, technology and engineering disciplines in higher education. Pre- and post-survey results showed that Physical Science Day is effective at increasing student knowledge about physics, physical science, and chemistry programs, raising awareness of broad career opportunities, as well as for stimulating youth interest towards studying such disciplines at UTPA
GaSbBi alloys and heterostructures: fabrication and properties
International audienceDilute bismuth (Bi) III-V alloys have recently attracted great attention, due to their properties of band-gap reduction and spin-orbit splitting. The incorporation of Bi into antimonide based III-V semiconductors is very attractive for the development of new optoelectronic devices working in the mid-infrared range (2-5 µm). However, due to its large size, Bi does not readily incorporate into III-V alloys and the epitaxy of III-V dilute bismides is thus very challenging. This book chapter presents the most recent developments in the epitaxy and characterization of GaSbBi alloys and heterostructures
The evolution of media coverage in professional and collegiate eSports
My thesis research is a comprehensive project looking at the evolution of media coverage
in professional and collegiate eSports. Using the methodology of participant observation and
interviewing allowed me to find commonalities between the answers of subjects and the data
given by other research on the media coverage of eSporting events. I used a theoretical approach
tailored toward media management and political economy to demonstrate how the understanding
of economics in eSports can further change the media coverage of eSporting events. Media
management, while primarily concerned with legacy media, is a theory with the potential to
explain the changes eSports is bringing to sports media coverage. The overarching purpose of
my thesis is to understand how both professional and collegiate sports coverage emerged from,
and responds to, the social practice of eSports, and turns that coverage into a viable form of
commercial media.Department of TelecommunicationsThesis (M.A.
