Closeup: Michigan State University
Since the end of spring term 1975, Michigan State University has had a formal undergraduate program in women\u27s studies. The program is called a thematic concentration , a new device at M.S.U. for facilitating interdisciplinary work in selected areas at no extra cost to the university (there are also thematic concentrations in Jewish, Islamic and film studies). For the student, this entails completing a minimum of 0 credits, or five to seven courses, chosen from at least three disciplines from an official list of women\u27s studies courses approved by the university curriculum committee. Upon the student\u27s graduation, the assistant dean in the college where the student has a major certifies completion of the program, noting on the student\u27s transcript: Undergraduate Program in Women\u27s Studies completed.
Approval of this program culminated several years of discussion among faculty and students interested in women\u27s studies. We are a program fairly rich in offerings; 14 different courses taught in 11 different departments are included in the official thematic concentration list. In addition, there is a popular women\u27s studies track (with at least 400 enrolled each term) in the required writing program for first-year students; courses with temporary numbers are taught from time to time; and there are several graduate level seminars in women\u27s studies. Among our offerings are two which, from our knowledge of programs around the country, seem fairly unique: a biology course on human sexual dimorphism and a philosophy course involving analysis of concepts central to feminist theory

âItâs like equality now; itâs not as if itâs the old daysâ: an investigation into gender identity development and football participation of adolescent girls
This article explores the influence participating in football has on the development of adolescent girlsâ gender identity, an area which currently lacks academic attention. Data were taken from an ethnographic study with a group of adolescent girls and boys and compared to Jeanesâ research. A social constructionist framework was deployed with links to both critical theory and feminist literature. Qualitative and participatory methods were used to fully engage with the complex issue of gender identity. The girls within this study were aware of the normative gender expectations linked to âbeing a femaleâ but did not find this restrictive. The girls moved between many changing identities and organised their âweb of selvesâ accordingly. The apparent need to measure success by the parameters of male standards created a barrier to girlsâ identity development

Promise has been shown for skillful prediction of physical, biogeochemical, and ecological variables on a range of timescales, suggesting potential for forecasts to aid in the management of living marine resources and coastal communities. However, the mechanisms underlying forecast skill in marine ecosystems are often poorly understood, and many forecasts, especially for biological variables, rely on empirical statistical relationships developed from historical observations. Here, we review statistical and dynamical marine ecosystem forecasting methods and highlight examples of their application along U.S. coastlines for seasonal-to-interannual (1â24 month) prediction of properties ranging from coastal sea level to marine top predator distributions. We then describe known mechanisms governing marine ecosystem predictability and how they have been used in forecasts to date. These mechanisms include physical atmospheric and oceanic processes, biogeochemical and ecological responses to physical forcing, and intrinsic characteristics of species themselves. In reviewing the state of the knowledge on forecasting techniques and mechanisms underlying marine ecosystem predictability, we aim to facilitate forecast development and uptake by (i) identifying methods and processes that can be exploited for development of skillful regional forecasts, (ii) informing priorities for forecast development and verification, and (iii) improving understanding of conditional forecast skill (i.e., a priori knowledge of whether a forecast is likely to be skillful). The Public Playground Paradox: "Childâs Joy" or Heterotopia of Fear?
Literature depicts children of the Global North withdrawing from public space toâacceptable islandsâ. Driven by fears both of and for children, the publicplayground â one such island â provides clear-cut distinctions between childhoodand adulthood. Extending this argument, this paper takes the original approach oftheoretically framing the playground as a heterotopia of deviance, examining âfor the first time â three Greek public playground sites in relation to adjacentpublic space. Drawing on an ethnographic study in Athens, findings show fear tounderpin surveillance, control and playground boundary porosity. Normativeclassification as âchildrenâs spaceâ discourages adult engagement. However, in anovel and significant finding, a paradoxical phenomenon sees the playgroundâspresence simultaneously legitimizing playful behaviour in adjacent public spacefor children and adults. Extended playground play creates alternate orderings andnegotiates norms and hierarchies, suggesting significant wider potential toreconceptualise playground-urban design for an intergenerational public realm
Childhood in Sociology and Society: The US Perspective
The field of childhood studies in the US is comprised of cross-disciplinary researchers who theorize and conduct research on both children and youth. US sociologists who study childhood largely draw on the childhood literature published in English. This article focuses on American sociological contributions, but notes relevant contributions from non-American scholars published in English that have shaped and fueled American research. This article also profiles the institutional support of childhood research in the US, specifically outlining the activities of the âChildren and Youthâ Section of the American Sociological Association (ASA), and assesses the contributions of this area of study for sociology as well as the implications for an interdisciplinary field.Yeshttps://us.sagepub.com/en-us/nam/manuscript-submission-guideline
