A dynamical pairing between two rational maps
Given two rational maps and on \PP^1 of degree at least
two, we study a symmetric, nonnegative-real-valued pairing
which is closely related to the canonical height functions $h_\varphi$ and
$h_\psi$ associated to these maps. Our main results show a strong connection
between the value of and the canonical heights of points which
are small with respect to at least one of the two maps and .
Several necessary and sufficient conditions are given for the vanishing of
. We give an explicit upper bound on the difference between the
canonical height $h_\psi$ and the standard height $h_\st$ in terms of

Role of the community matron in advance care planning and ‘do not attempt CPR’ decision-making: a qualitative study
The community matron (CM) is often the key worker caring for patients with chronic, life-limiting, long-term conditions, but these patients are not always recognised as palliative cases. This study explored the experiences of CMs with regard to advance care planning (ACP) and ‘do not attempt cardiopulmonary resuscitation’ (DNACPR) decision-making to understand whether or not they felt adequately prepared for this aspect of their role, and why. Qualitative data were generated from six CMs using a broad interpretive phenomenological approach. Face-to-face recorded interviews were analysed using template analysis. The study found that although participants faced complex ethical situations around ACP and DNACPR almost on a daily basis, none had received any formal training despite the emphasis on training in national and local guidelines. Participants often struggled to get their patients accepted on to the Gold Standards Framework. The research found variability and complexity of cases to be the main barriers to clear identification of the palliative phase
French Colonial Education
By 1944, after eight decades of French colonial control, only a small percentage of eligible students in Cambodia attended French schools. Several scholars argue on the basis of such evidence that the French purposefully restricted education for Cambodians in order first to achieve and then to maintain power in the colony. This article examines educational development in Cambodia during the French colonial period and concludes that the lack of Cambodian educational participation stemmed from Cambodian resistance, rather than French planning. French educational reforms sought to understand Cambodian resistance, to overcome it, and to draw Cambodians into schools dedicated to the training of colonial civil servants
Effects of Planting Date and Hybrid Maturity on Moisture Stress in Corn
A two-year (2011 and 2012) study was conducted at the Texas A&M AgriLife Research Farm near College Station, Texas, to examine the effects of planting date and hybrid maturity on moisture stress in corn (Zea mays L.). The objective of this research was to determine the interactive effects of these factors on corn physiological processes, development, growth and yield in southcentral Texas. Treatments consisted of two irrigation strategies (dryland and irrigated), three planting dates (25-Feb, 10-Mar, and 25-Mar), and four hybrid relative maturities (117 day, 111 day, 95 day, and 83 day). Plants were evaluated at three different growth stages (R1, R3 and R5), with several physiological parameters measured, including: photosynthetic activity, chlorophyll fluorescence, leaf temperature, and yield. Photosynthetic activity was the rate of stored carbon assimilate measured with a LI-COR 6400. Chlorophyll fluorescence was the quantum efficiency of photosystem II measured with a PAM-2100. Leaf temperature was measured with SmartCrop infrared canopy temperature sensors and data was represented as canopy temperature less ambient air temperature (canopy temperature depression). Significant differences due to treatment occurred for all the above parameters. Measurements taken at the R1 growth stage provided little insight relative to plant stress. Canopy temperature depression was more indicative of stress than actual leaf temperature. Irrigation provided greater yield, height, and photosynthetic activity.
