The U.S. flow of funds accounts and their uses

    Get PDF
The U.S. flow of funds accounts compiled by the Board of Governors provide a broadly consistent set of time-series data for tracking funds as they move from economic sectors that serve as sources of capital to sectors that use the capital to acquire physical and financial assets. They present a wide range of data organized by financial instrument and by sector. With statistics extending back more than a half a century, the accounts document financial developments, provide means for studying macroeconomic behavior, and are used for policy purposes. This article briefly describes the accounts and shows how the data can be used to interpret major financial trends among households and nonfinancial corporate businesses.Flow of funds

The Uncertain Future of the Unfinished Business Doctrine

(Exceprt) It is no secret that the legal industry has experience financial difficulty following the great recession. Many law firms have been less profitable, and in some extreme circumstances, have filed for bankruptcy. The worlds largest law firms are of no exception to this recent phenomenon. The collapses of the mega-firms Dewey & LeBoeuf, Coudert Brothers LLP, Heller Ehrman LLP, Howrey LLP, Thacher Proffitt & Wood LLP, and Thelen LLP are prime examples. Since most law firms, especially large firms, do not reorganize in bankruptcy, a bankruptcy trustee will often be appointed to administer the firm’s estate. In order to maximize the estate, the trustee in many cases will pursue claw-back actions against the former law firm’s partners and creditors. In addition, bankruptcy trustees have turned to the “unfinished business doctrine” as a tool to recover value from former partners and their new firms. When a law firm dissolves, its attorneys naturally must find new firms to call home. Likewise, the dissolved firm’s former clients’ legal issues do not disappear along with the firm. Accordingly, many former partners of the dissolved firm will take these former clients along with them to their new firms. Many bankruptcy trustees, however, have sought to recover the profits earned on the matters taken by the former partners to their firms from these new firms under the unfinished business doctrine, which provides that the dissolved firm could be entitled to recover the profits earned on the pending hourly matters of its clients

Observed Limits on Charge Exchange Contributions to the Diffuse X-ray Background

We present a high resolution spectrum of the diffuse X-ray background from 0.1 to 1 keV for a ~1 region of the sky centered at l=90, b=+60 using a 36-pixel array of microcalorimeters flown on a sounding rocket. With an energy resolution of 11 eV FWHM below 1 keV, the spectrum's observed line ratios help separate charge exchange contributions originating within the heliosphere from thermal emission of hot gas in the interstellar medium. The X-ray sensitivity below 1 keV was reduced by about a factor of four from contamination that occurred early in the flight, limiting the significance of the results. The observed centroid of helium-like O VII is 568+2-3 eV at 90% confidence. Since the centroid expected for thermal emission is 568.4 eV while for charge exchange is 564.2 eV, thermal emission appears to dominate for this line complex, consistent with much of the high-latitude O VII emission originating in 2-3 x 10^6 K gas in the Galactic halo. On the other hand, the observed ratio of C VI Ly gamma to Ly alpha is 0.3+-0.2. The expected ratios are 0.04 for thermal emission and 0.24 for charge exchange, indicating that charge exchange must contribute strongly to this line and therefore potentially to the rest of the ROSAT R12 band usually associated with 10^6 K emission from the Local Hot Bubble. The limited statistics of this experiment and systematic uncertainties due to the contamination require only >32% thermal emission for O VII and >20% from charge exchange for C VI at the 90% confidence level. An experimental gold coating on the silicon substrate of the array greatly reduced extraneous signals induced on nearby pixels from cosmic rays passing through the substrate, reducing the triggered event rate by a factor of 15 from a previous flight of the instrument.Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures, to be published in Ap

We report the use of PbS nanocrystals within a hybrid device that emits 1.2 mu m electroluminescence with an external quantum efficiency of 1.15% corresponding to an internal quantum efficiency of similar to 5%-12% thus demonstrating a viable, low-cost, highly efficient near infrared organic electroluminescent device. Direct generation of the excited state on the nanocrystal result in eliminating competing processes that have previously led to the low reported efficiencies in near-infrared light emitting devices. Furthermore, the emission wavelength can be tuned to cover a wide range of wavelengths including the 1.3-1.5 mu m region without significant change of the efficiency. Tampering by office-based methadone maintenance patients with methadone take home privileges: a pilot study

    Get PDF
Methadone Maintenance Treatment (MMT) is among the most widely studied treatments for opiate dependence with proven benefits for patients and society. When misused, however, methadone can also be lethal. The issue of methadone diversion is a major concern for all MMT programs. A potential source for such diversion is from those MMT patients who receive daily take home methadone doses. Using a reverse phase high performance liquid chromatography method, seven of the nine patients who were randomly selected to have all of their remaining methadone take home doses (within a 24 hour period) analyzed, returned lower than expected quantities of methadone. This finding suggests the possibility that such patients may have tampered with their daily take home doses. Larger prospective observational studies are clearly needed to test the supposition of this pilot study
