    Scaling law for viscous friction in thin lubricating films that acts on a solid disk falling in confined space

    We fill a viscous liquid in a vertically stood cell of millimeter thickness, called the Hele-Shaw cell, and insert a disk in the liquid whose thickness is smaller than the cell thickness. The disk starts falling in the liquid due to gravity with opposed by viscous friction. We focus on the case in which lubricating films formed in the gap between the cell surface and the disk surface are thinner than the disk thickness. As a result, we find a distinct regime in which the flow and the viscous friction are characterized by the thickness of the lubricating film. The scaling regime is identified through clear collapse of the data onto a master curve. We also discuss the case in which lubricating films are thick. The present results are relevant to fundamental issues and applications in various fields such as microfluidics, bioconvection, and active matter.Comment: 14 pages, 4 figure

    Recently, the prevalence of viral hepatitis patients has been increasing. Therefore, the reconstruction of liver based on tissue engineering has attracted significant attention. However, the formation or regeneration mechanisms of the liver have not been elucidated; therefore, practical regenerative medicine technology based on tissue engineered liver has not been accomplished. In this study, we propose an analysis model using a Particle Model as the first step. The analysis object is a hepatic lobule. The purpose of this analysis is to elucidate the process of cell proliferation, mechanisms, and states at the micro scale. We used parameters which were obtained by experiments using rats relating to diffusivity, oxygen concentration, and oxygen consumption of a cell.     The liver has the ability to reform and regenerate in our body. However, the mechanisms of reformation or regeneration of the liver have not been elucidated. In this study, we propose an analysis model using a Particle Model to elucidate the mechanism of liver formation. The object of analysis is a hepatic lobule, which is the basic component of the liver. First, a 2-dimensional cell proliferation around one blood vessel was modeled. Second, angiogenesis was added and considered. And finally, the model was applied to the hepatic lobule and the 2D formation of the hepatic lobule was revealed. We used experimentally derived parameters such as diffusivity, oxygen concentration, and oxygen consumption of a cell.     Lumbar motor control & perceptual awareness

    Purpose : The purpose of this study was to clarify the differences in lumbar spine and hip joint motor control ability (MCA) in prone hip extension (PHE) between individuals with and without low back pain (LBP). It also aimed to determine the relationship between lumbar spine and hip joint MCA and lumbar perceptual awareness in individuals with LBP. Methods : In total, 78 university students (20 with LBP and 58 without) were included in the study. The MCA of the lumbar spine and hip joint in PHE and perceptual awareness were evaluated. The MCA of the lumbar spine and hip joint was measured using a wearable sensor. Subsequently, a comparison of the MCA of the lumbar spine and hip joints of the participants and the relationship between MCA and lumbar perceptual awareness were examined. Results : The MCA of the LBP group was higher than that of the non-LBP group in motion on the sagittal plane. In addition, perceptual awareness was negatively correlated with MCA in the sagittal plane in the lumbar spine. Conclusion : People with LBP had higher lumbar spine and hip joint MCA than those without LBP. Perceptual awareness was associated with lumbar spine and hip joint MCA in people with LBP

    Systemic Supplementation of Collagen VI by Neonatal Transplantation of iPSC-Derived MSCs Improves Histological Phenotype and Function of Col6-Deficient Model Mice

    6型コラーゲン欠損筋ジストロフィーに対する細胞治療法の開発. 京都大学プレスリリース. 2021-11-29.Collagen VI is distributed in the interstitium and is secreted mainly by mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) in skeletal muscle. Mutations in COL6A1-3 genes cause a spectrum of COL6-related myopathies. In this study, we performed a systemic transplantation study of human-induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC)-derived MSCs (iMSCs) into neonatal immunodeficient COL6-related myopathy model (Col6a1[KO]/NSG) mice to validate the therapeutic potential. Engraftment of the donor cells and the resulting rescued collagen VI were observed at the quadriceps and diaphragm after intraperitoneal iMSC transplantation. Transplanted mice showed improvement in pathophysiological characteristics compared with untreated Col6a1[KO]/NSG mice. In detail, higher muscle regeneration in the transplanted mice resulted in increased muscle weight and enlarged myofibers. Eight-week-old mice showed increased muscle force and performed better in the grip and rotarod tests. Overall, these findings support the concept that systemic iMSC transplantation can be a therapeutic option for COL6-related myopathies

    Perceived eHealth Literacy and Learning Experiences Among Japanese Undergraduate Nursing Students

    This study aimed to describe undergraduate nursing students\u27 perceived eHealth literacy and learning experiences of eHealth literacy in Japan and to clarify the relationship between these factors. We conducted a self-administered online questionnaire survey using a convenience sample of 353 Japanese undergraduate nursing students selected from three universities. Participants completed the eHealth Literacy Scale and questionnaires on learning experiences of eHealth literacy and some demographic factors. Participants had moderate perceived eHealth (mean [SD], 24.52 [5.20]). More than half the participants responded that they had no learning experiences of health or science literacy. We observed a positive correlation between the total mean eHealth literacy and learning experiences scores. Undergraduate nursing students in Japan had slightly lower perceived eHealth literacy than nursing students in other countries, hospital nurses, and even patients. Of the 353 participants in this study, 69.4% did not know “where to find helpful health resources on the Internet,” 80.2% of those lacked the skills “to evaluate health resources,” and 68.9% could not “differentiate the quality of health resources on the Internet”; few of the participants perceived themselves as having any experience in learning the six domains of eHealth literacy. Very few reported learning about health (43.3%) and scientific (21.8%) literacy. The low perceived eHealth literacy among participants might reflect lack of knowledge and confidence in eHealth literacy as well as their own low level of health-promoting behaviors; this might influence the quality of health education of clients and their families. Nursing educators should address the lack of eHealth literacy among undergraduate nursing students

    Safety and Efficacy of FIT039 for Verruca Vulgaris: A Placebo-Controlled, Phase I/II Randomized Controlled Trial

    TRIAL DESIGN: Human papillomavirus infection causes verruca vulgaris. CDK9 inhibitor FIT039 inhibits DNA virus proliferation in animal models. We conducted a multicenter, single-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized phase I/II clinical trial evaluating the safety and efficacy of FIT039 against verruca vulgaris. METHODS: Target lesions were treated with liquid nitrogen once, and a FIT039 patch or placebo patch was applied for 14 days. The primary endpoint was lesion disappearance. The secondary endpoints were safety and changes in dimension, cross-sectional area, and the number of petechial lesions. RESULTS: A total of 24 participants were randomly allocated to the FIT039 (n = 13, median age, 54 years) and placebo (n = 11, median age, 62 years) groups. Verruca vulgaris did not disappear. FIT039 decreased the dimension to 76% of the initial value on day 29, followed by an increase to 98% on day 57. Placebo showed a monotonic increase to 107% on day 57. Changes in the cross-sectional area and petechiae number were comparable between the groups. CONCLUSIONS: No drug-related adverse reactions occurred. FIT039 efficacy was not determined in this study
