    Development of a Science Database System Applicable to Various Access Restrictions

    金沢大学総合メディア基盤センターWe developed a general-purpose database (DB) system that manages and opens experimental and/or observational data accumulated in universities and academic institutes. This platform works as a web-DB management system in which databases can be easily managed without special skills and facilities. By defining a group manager and data manager, the proposed system defines a flexible access restriction for each user and each unit of datasets under the control of these managers. We demonstrate how a variety of web-DBs are appropriately integrated under one management system in such situations in which each web-DB has a different user interface in its search and data distribution functions and is designed with a different language (or script) and connection method to its DB. In spite of the diversity of web-DBs, the proposed system is highly suitable for practical use

    Similar Data Retrieval from Enormous Datasets on ELF/VLF Wave Spectrum Observed by Akebono

    金沢大学総合メディア基盤センターAs the total amount of data measured by scientific spacecraft is drastically increasing, it is necessary for researchers to develop new computation methods for efficient analysis of these enormous datasets. In the present study, we propose a new algorithm for similar data retrieval. We first discuss key descriptors that represent characteristics of the VLF/ELF waves observed by the Akebono spacecraft. Second, an algorithm for similar data retrieval is introduced. Finally, we demonstrate that the developed algorithm works well for the retrieval of the VLF spectrum with a small amount of CPU load

    Particle Size Measurement of Reaction Product Aerosol of Sodium-Oxygen

    A multi-level scenario simulation system as a safety infrastructure technology is required for design optimization, safety margin adjustment, and innovative technology developments of sodium-cooled fast reactor (SFR). In order to properly implement the Verification and Validation (V & V) of the simulation system, it is indispensable to ensure experimental database of sodium chemistry as specific SFR safety issue. In this study, measurement results of aerosols generated by sodium-oxygen reaction for sodium fire event were reported with the aim of clarifying the radiation heat transport phenomena in the reaction field. The sodium-oxygen counter-flow diffusion flame was formed one-dimensionally above the sodium pool by the reaction between sodium vapour and oxygen. Argon (Ar) including 2% oxygen were introduced to a liquid sodium pool (temperature: 820K) under the reduced pressure condition (0.05MPa). Ar guard flows were employed to stabilize the reaction. The reaction continued more than 600 seconds without any changes in terms of flame shape and position. Aerosol size was measured as a function of Z (the distance from the sodium pool surface) and r (the distance from the center of the sodium pool). Laser Induced Incandescence (LII) and the Mie scattering method using the different wavelength laser beams (405nm, 450nm, 520nm, 532nm, 638nm and 650nm) were employed to ensure the measurement accuracy. Aerosol sizes from several hundred nm to 1 μm were measured in this reaction field and the aerosol size increased toward the sodium pool. This stemmed largely from aerosol growth and polymerization because the flow rate decreased near the sodium pool. It was also confirmed that the size of aerosol measured by LII was in good agreement with the measurement using the Mie scattering method under the same conditions. The refractive index of the aerosol was also evaluated to be 1.42-0.5i

    Aurora-A controls pre-replicative complex assembly and DNA replication by stabilizing geminin in mitosis

    Geminin, an essential factor for DNA replication, directly binds to the licensing factor Cdt1 and inhibits pre-replicative complex formation to prevent re-replication. In G1, geminin levels are controlled by the anaphase-promoting complex/cyclosome (APC/C) ubiquitin ligase complex, which targets geminin for proteasomal degradation to allow pre-replicative complex formation. Conversely, from S to G2, geminin is stabilized due to APC/C ubiquitin ligase complex inhibition, ensuring the inhibition of pre-replicative complex formation. However, mitotic regulation of geminin has hitherto not been described. Here we show that Aurora-A phosphorylates geminin on Thr25 during M phase, and this event induces geminin stabilization by preventing its APC/C ubiquitin ligase complex-mediated degradation during mitosis. In turn, stabilized geminin inhibits SCFSkp2-mediated degradation of Cdt1 to ensure pre-replicative complex formation in the ensuing S phase. The Aurora-A–geminin–Cdt1 axis therefore represents a critical regulator of proper DNA replication

    C6 radiculopathy with winged scapula

    A 73-year-old woman complained of right medial side of scapular pain associated with winged scapula to miss without observing the back in minute detail. Additional treatment was required due to overlooking caused by insufficient examination. We performed micro-endoscopic foraminotomy that provided the disappearance of scapular pain and improvement of winged scapula in relatively early. It was commonly said that winged scapula is an extremely rare condition that causes dysfunction of the upper extremities. We suggest that there are the meaning of winged scapula in diagnosis and the importance of physical examination. Further studies should be required to research the morbidity of winged scapula associated with cervical disease. By sharing our experience of this attention arousing case, we provide information not to repeat the same mistakes

    Debridement Using FED System for young children

    Objective : Infectious spondylodiscitis (IS) is rarely seen in healthy elementary school age children. Conservative treatment with antibiotics is usually preferable but sometimes fails because of the low identification rate of the pathogen by percutaneous needle biopsy. When surgical treatment is indicated, selecting the appropriate procedure is crucial in terms of invasiveness for such young children. Case report : We present the case of a 9-year-old otherwise healthy girl with IS who successfully underwent debridement and identification of the causative pathogen using full endoscopic discectomy (FED) system. Methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus was identified on several cultures of samples. Immediately after the surgery, the LBP was significantly decreased and the remittent fever resolved dramatically. At the 1-year follow-up, she had no symptoms and plain radiographs showed bony fusion. Conclusion : This is the first report on IS in elementary school-age children treated with the FED system. Debridement using this system could provide minimally invasive and effective curettage of the infected disc space and can be helpful in identifying the pathogen even for small children

    Accurate diagnosis of low back pain

    Background : There is few reports evaluated accurately the pain generator of low back pain in elite athletes. The purpose of this report was to show case series and to investigate the cause of unidentified low back pain of elite athletes. Methods : Twenty-three adult elite athletes consulted our sports spine clinic to seek a second opinion for low back pain between April 2013 and March 2016. Their cause of low back pain had not been identified by nearby doctor. Spine surgeons had diagnosed using diagnostic injection and STIR-MRI and the final diagnosis made by the spine surgeon were collected. Results : The mean age of 23 patients (16 male, 7 female) was 30.4 years. The most common sport played was baseball. The final diagnosis made by a spine surgeon was as follows : disc related low back pain (n = 12), facet joint arthritis (n = 5), vertebral endplate injury (n = 4), early-stage lumbar spondylolysis (n = 1), supraspinous ligament injury (n = 1). Conclusions : A thorough medical interview, careful physical examination, appropriate diagnostic imaging, and injection block examination can effectively identify the cause of low back pain

    Lumbar Spondylolysis and vascular supply

    INTRODUCTION : The pathology of lumbar spondylolysis is generally thought to begin with a stress fracture in adolescence. Stress fractures of the lower extremities occur in watershed areas with a poor vascular supply because of an inability to respond to stress and heal. This pathology has not been well researched in the lumbar spine. The aim of this study was to evaluate the distribution of the spinal arteries in patients with lumbar spondylolysis. METHODS : The extraosseous distribution of the arteries around the pars interarticularis was retrospectively investigated in 14 patients with colon cancer who underwent abdominal contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CE-CT) as part of a preoperative assessment at our hospital and were found to have spondylolysis at L5. RESULTS : All patients were found to have terminal-stage spondylolysis at L5 (1 unilateral, 13 bilateral). L5 segmental artery was absent in all cases. However, separate spinal arteries supplying the pars interarticularis at L5 were found above and below the transverse process at this level. CONCLUSION : All the patients had two separate arteries originating from the cranial and caudal sides that distributed to the superior and inferior articular processes, suggesting that the pars interarticularis is a posterior element containing a vascular watershed area
