Effects of Green Tea Fractions on Oxygen-Induced Retinal Neovascularization in the Neonatal Rat
This study aimed to investigate the preventive effects of green tea fractions (GTFs) on rat model of oxygen-induced retinopathy (OIR). Neonatal Sprague-Dawley rats were exposed to daily cycles of 80% oxygen (20.5 h), ambient air (0.5 h), and progressive return to 80% oxygen (3 h) until postnatal day 12 (P12), then the rats were placed in ambient air until P18. The green tea was fractionated by DM-A50, DM-W, M-B, and M-W. The rats were treated once daily from P6 to P17 by gastric gavage of GTFs (0.05 or 0.01 g/ml) or distilled water (DW) at 50 µl/10 g body weight. On P18, the rats were sacrificed and the retinal samples were collected. The retinal neovascularization (NV) was scored and avascular areas (AVAs) were measured as a % of total retinal area (%AVAs) in ADPase stained retinas. The NV scores in 0.01 g/ml M-W were significantly lower than those in DW. The %AVAs in 0.05 g/ml DM-A50 and in 0.05 g/ml and 0.01 g/ml M-W were significantly lower than those in DW. There were less catechins, and less caffeine in M-W fraction compared with other GTFs, suggesting components of green tea except for catechins and caffeine might suppress the neovascularization in rat model of OIR

Characterization of waves of leukocyte recruitment to the lung allograft and the effect of CTLA4-Ig
MHC-mismatched lung allografts are rapidly rejected by the host immune response. We analyzed cells infiltrating the grafted lung tissue using a collagenase-digestion method. The grafted lung was filled with host-derived leukocytes as early as day 1 post transplantation and the majority of the initial infiltrating cells were granulocytes. This initial influx of granulocytes waned rapidly, followed by a steady increase in lymphocytes, particularly T cells, and then by macrophages. The proportion of CD4+ T cells that express CD25 were increased in the graft the majority of which were activated CD4+ cells. We applied cytotoxic T-lymphocyte-associated antigen 4 (CTLA4)-Ig treatment in combination with donor-specific blood transfusion to the transplantation of lung allograft, which was significantly prolonged by the treatment. To examine the cellular and molecular basis of the inhibition of the graft rejection, we evaluated number and cytokine mRNA expression of the cells infiltrating in the lung allograft using collagenase-digestion method, although we were unable to detect significant effects of the treatment. Taken together, this study demonstrates that single cell suspensions from cellular infiltrates of lung tissue is useful for phenotypical and functional studies on cells infiltrating lung tissue after graft transplantation
Scalar chiral ground states of spin ladders with four-spin exchanges
We show that scalar chiral order can be induced by four-spin exchanges in the
two-leg spin ladder, using the spin-chirality duality transformation and
matrix-product ansatz. Scalar-chiral-ordered states are found to be exact
ground states in a family of spin ladder models. In this scalar chiral phase,
there is a finite energy gap above the doubly degenerate ground states and a
symmetry is fully broken. It is also shown that the
SU(4)-symmetric model, which is self-dual under the duality transformation, is
on a multicritical point surrounded by the staggered dimer phase, the staggered
scalar chiral phase, and the gapless phase.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures, to appear in Phys. Rev.

Discovery of the Fastest Early Optical Emission from Overluminous SN Ia 2020hvf: A Thermonuclear Explosion within a Dense Circumstellar Environment
Ia型超新星の爆発直後の閃光を捉えることに成功 --特異な爆発に至る恒星進化の謎に迫る--. 京都大学プレスリリース. 2021-12-10.In this Letter we report a discovery of a prominent flash of a peculiar overluminous Type Ia supernova, SN 2020hvf, in about 5 hr of the supernova explosion by the first wide-field mosaic CMOS sensor imager, the Tomo-e Gozen Camera. The fast evolution of the early flash was captured by intensive intranight observations via the Tomo-e Gozen high-cadence survey. Numerical simulations show that such a prominent and fast early emission is most likely generated from an interaction between 0.01 M⊙ circumstellar material (CSM) extending to a distance of ∼10¹³ cm and supernova ejecta soon after the explosion, indicating a confined dense CSM formation at the final evolution stage of the progenitor of SN 2020hvf. Based on the CSM–ejecta interaction-induced early flash, the overluminous light curve, and the high ejecta velocity of SN 2020hvf, we suggest that the SN 2020hvf may originate from a thermonuclear explosion of a super-Chandrasekhar-mass white dwarf (“super-MCh WD”). Systematical investigations on explosion mechanisms and hydrodynamic simulations of the super-MCh WD explosion are required to further test the suggested scenario and understand the progenitor of this peculiar supernova

The result of sedimentary study of the western part of the Hitoyoshi Basin in southern Kyusyu, are given in the present article mainly from the viewpoint of the sedimentary environment. K-Ar age evidence suggests that the Hitoyoshi Formation is Late Pliocene in age. The formation is lithologically divided into two members. The lower member shows very rapid changes in vertical facies, namely, conglomerate, tuff breccia, sandstones and tuffs in ascending order. This shows a lacustrine environment. From the lithological characters and sedimentary strucuture, the member is considered to be sediments of fan-delta plain or braided-river. The upper member is composed mainly of slightly strarified siltstones, yielding plant fossils and with intercalations of sandstone, tuff and diatomite. This represents the later depositional stage of the formation and filling up of the lake basin with sediments. Furthermore, brief notes on teaching materials development about stratum of Earth Science Education are added
