    Experimental Entanglement Concentration and Universal Bell-state Synthesizer

    We report a novel Bell-state synthesizer in which an interferometric entanglement concentration scheme is used. An initially mixed polarization state from type-II spontaneous parametric down-conversion becomes entangled after the interferometric entanglement concentrator. This Bell-state synthesizer is universal in the sense that the output polarization state is not affected by spectral filtering, crystal thickness, and, most importantly, the choice of pump source. It is also robust against environmental disturbance and a more general state, partially mixed−-partially entangled state, can be readily generated as well.Comment: Minor update (Newer data

    A study of semi-inclusive charmless B→πXB \to \pi X decays

    We study semi-inclusive charmless decays B→πXB \to \pi X in detail, such as Bˉ0→π±(0)X\bar B^0 \to \pi^{\pm (0)} X, B0→π±(0)XB^0 \to \pi^{\pm (0)} X, B±→π±(0)XB^{\pm} \to \pi^{\pm (0)} X, where XX does not contain a charm (anti)quark. We find that the process Bˉ0→π−X\bar B^0 \to \pi^- X (B0→π+XB^0 \to \pi^+ X) can be particularly useful for determination of the CKM matrix element ∣Vub∣|V_{ub}|. We calculate and present the branching ratio (BR) of Bˉ0→π−X\bar B^0 \to \pi^- X as a function of ∣Vub∣|V_{ub}|, with an estimate of possible uncertainties. It is expected that the BR is an order of 10−410^{-4}. Our estimation indicates that one can phenomenologically determine ∣Vub∣|V_{ub}| with reasonable accuracy by measuring the BR of Bˉ0→π−X\bar B^0 \to \pi^- X (B0→π+XB^0 \to \pi^+ X).Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures; Revtex; version accepted for publication in Eur.     A linear 50/50 beamsplitter, together with a coincidence measurement, has been widely used in quantum optical experiments, such as teleportation, dense coding, etc., for interferometrically distinguishing, measuring, or projecting onto one of the four two-photon polarization Bell-states âˆŁÏˆ(−)>|\psi^{(-)}>. In this paper, we demonstrate that the coincidence measurement at the output of a beamsplitter cannot be used as an absolute identifier of the input state âˆŁÏˆ(−)>|\psi^{(-)}> nor as an indication that the input photons have projected to the âˆŁÏˆ(−)>|\psi^{(-)}> state.Comment: 4 pages, two-colum

    We study first-order interference in spontaneous parametric down-conversion generated by two pump pulses that do not overlap in time. The observed modulation in the angular distribution of the signal detector counting rate can only be explained in terms of a quantum mechanical description based on biphoton states.     We investigate the angular distributions of the rare B decay, B→K∗(→Kπ)ℓ+ℓ−B \to K^* (\to K \pi) \ell^+ \ell^-, in general supersymmetric extensions of the standard model. We consider the new physics contributions from the operators O7,8,9,10O_{7,8,9,10} in small invariant mass region of lepton pair. We show that the azimuthal angle distribution of the decay can tell us the new physics effects clearly from the behavior of the distribution, even if new physics does not change the decay rate substantially from the standard model prediction

    The intermittency is investigated when the current reversal occurs in a deterministic inertia ratchet system. To determine which type the intermittency belongs to, we obtain the return map of velocities of particle using stroboscopic recording, and numerically calculate the distribution of average laminar length {}. The distribution follows the scaling law of ∝ϔ−1/2{} \propto {\epsilon}^{-1/2}, the characteristic relation of type-I intermittency.Comment: 4 pages, 7 figure

    Nonleptonic two-body charmless B decays involving a tensor meson in ISGW2 model

    Nonleptonic charmless B decays into a pseudoscalar (P) or a vector (V) meson accompanying a tensor (T) meson are re-analyzed. We scrutinize the hadronic uncertainties and ambiguities of the form factors which appear in the literature. The Isgur-Scora-Grinstein-Wise updated model (ISGW2) is adopted to evaluate the relevant hadronic matrix elements. We calculate the branching ratios and CP asymmetries for various B→P(V)TB\to P(V)T decay processes. With the ISGW2 model, the branching ratios are enhanced by about an order of magnitude compared to the previous estimates. We show that the ratios \calB(B\to VT)/\calB(B\to PT) for some strangeness-changing processes are very sensitive to the CKM angle Îł\gamma (ϕ3\phi_3).Comment: 23 pages, REVTEX; minor clarifications included; to appear in Phys.     Fast-ion redistribution and loss due to edge perturbations in the ASDEX Upgrade, DIII-D and KSTAR tokamaks

    The impact of edge localized modes (ELMs) and externally applied resonant and non-resonant magnetic perturbations (MPs) on fast-ion confinement/transport have been investigated in the ASDEX Upgrade (AUG), DIII-D and KSTAR tokamaks. Two phases with respect to the ELM cycle can be clearly distinguished in ELM-induced fast-ion losses. Inter-ELM losses are characterized by a coherent modulation of the plasma density around the separatrix while intra-ELM losses appear as well-defined bursts. In high collisionality plasmas with mitigated ELMs, externally applied MPs have little effect on kinetic profiles, including fast-ions, while a strong impact on kinetic profiles is observed in low-collisionality, low q 95 plasmas with resonant and non-resonant MPs. In low-collisionality H-mode plasmas, the large fast-ion filaments observed during ELMs are replaced by a loss of fast-ions with a broad-band frequency and an amplitude of up to an order of magnitude higher than the neutral beam injection prompt loss signal without MPs. A clear synergy in the overall fast-ion transport is observed between MPs and neoclassical tearing modes. Measured fast-ion losses are typically on banana orbits that explore the entire pedestal/scrape-off layer.
