An integrated wind risk warning model for urban rail transport in Shanghai, China
The integrated wind risk warning model for rail transport presented has four elements:
Background wind data, a wind field model, a vulnerability model, and a risk model. Background
wind data uses observations in this study. Using the wind field model with effective surface
roughness lengths, the background wind data are interpolated to a 30-m resolution grid. In the
vulnerability model, the aerodynamic characteristics of railway vehicles are analyzed with CFD
(Computational Fluid Dynamics) modelling. In the risk model, the maximum value of three
aerodynamic forces is used as the criteria to evaluate rail safety and to quantify the risk level under
extremely windy weather. The full model is tested for the Shanghai Metro Line 16 using wind
conditions during Typhoon Chan-hom. The proposed approach enables quick quantification of real-
time safety risk levels during typhoon landfall, providing sophisticated warning information for
rail vehicle operation safety
Identifying Retweetable Tweets with a Personalized Global Classifier
In this paper we present a method to identify tweets that a user may find
interesting enough to retweet. The method is based on a global, but
personalized classifier, which is trained on data from several users,
represented in terms of user-specific features. Thus, the method is trained on
a sufficient volume of data, while also being able to make personalized
decisions, i.e., the same post received by two different users may lead to
different classification decisions. Experimenting with a collection of approx.\
130K tweets received by 122 journalists, we train a logistic regression
classifier, using a wide variety of features: the content of each tweet, its
novelty, its text similarity to tweets previously posted or retweeted by the
recipient or sender of the tweet, the network influence of the author and
sender, and their past interactions. Our system obtains F1 approx. 0.9 using
only 10 features and 5K training instances.Comment: This is a long paper version of the extended abstract titled "A
Personalized Global Filter To Predict Retweets", of the same authors, which
was published in the 25th ACM UMAP conference in Bratislava, Slovakia, in

Simplicial Chiral Models
Principal chiral models on a d-1 dimensional simplex are introduced and
studied analytically in the large limit. The and
models are explicitly solved. Relationship with standard lattice models and
with few-matrix systems in the double scaling limit are discussed.Comment: 6 pages, PHYZZ
Resonant tunneling of light through thin metal films via strongly localized surface plasmons
W.-C. Tan, T. W. Preist, and J. Roy Sambles, Physical Review B, Vol. 62, pp. 11134-11138 (2000). "Copyright © 2000 by the American Physical Society."We present a theoretical model of the optical response of a silver film having narrow-grooved zero-order gratings on both sides. It is found that incident p-polarized photons can resonantly tunnel through such a metal film via exciting standing-wave surface plasmon-polariton (SPP) modes localized in the grooves of the two opposite surfaces. This leads to strong transmission peaks in the visible and ultraviolet regions, while for s-polarized photons the film acts as a nearly perfect mirror
Nanoscale broadband transmission lines for spin qubit control
The intense interest in spin-based quantum information processing has caused
an increasing overlap between two traditionally distinct disciplines, such as
magnetic resonance and nanotechnology. In this work we discuss rigourous design
guidelines to integrate microwave circuits with charge-sensitive
nanostructures, and describe how to simulate such structures accurately and
efficiently. We present a new design for an on-chip, broadband, nanoscale
microwave line that optimizes the magnetic field driving a spin qubit, while
minimizing the disturbance on a nearby charge sensor. This new structure was
successfully employed in a single-spin qubit experiment, and shows that the
simulations accurately predict the magnetic field values even at frequencies as
high as 30 GHz.Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures, 1 table, pdflate
