ALMA MATER VILNENSISI: THE RECONSTITUTION OF STEPHEN BATHORY UNIVERSITY IN VILNIUS The article discusses the early 20th-century attempts of the Polish intellectual elites to re-establish in Vilnius the institution of higher education which had been closed by a tsar’s ukase in 1832. It focuses on the efforts undertaken in 1915–1919, which led to the foundation of Stephen Bathory University (Universitas Batoreana Vilnensisi) by a decree of Chief of State Józef Piłsudki’s on 28 August 1919

EMIGRACYJNE ŚLADY STEFANII KOSSOWSKIEJ

W artykule opisano działalność Stefanii Kossowskiej, pisarki, dziennikarki i ostatniej redaktor tygodnika „Wiadomości” w latach 1974–1981. Omówiono jej edukację oraz początki drogi dziennikarskiej (pisma „Bluszcz”, „Po prostu”). W czasie II wojny światowej nawiązała współpracę z „Wiadomościami Polskimi, Politycznymi i Literackimi” Mieczysława Grydzewskiego. Po zakończeniu wojny pozostała w Anglii i kontynuowała działalność dziennikarską. Od 1954 r. w tygodniku „Wiadomości” prowadziła stałą rubrykę podpisywaną „Big Ben”. W Londynie połączyła Kossowskich bliska przyjaźń z Mieczysławem Grydzewskim. Po jego śmierci, na zmianę z Michałem Chmielowcem, redagowała „Wiadomości”. Po śmierci tego ostatniego w 1974 r. objęła redakcję tygodnika, który wydawała do kwietnia 1981 r. Po zamknięciu pisma zdeponowała jego archiwum w pomieszczeniach Fundacji z Brzezia Lanckorońskich. W 1994 r. podjęła decyzję o przekazaniu całego archiwum do Uniwersytetu Mikołaja Kopernika w Toruniu

Das Buch ist eine Sammlung von Skizzen und Erinnerungen an die Geschichte der Universitätsbibliothek in Thorn und ihre MitarbeiterInnen in den Jahren 1971–1977. Der Autor der Erinnerungen, Buch- und Bibliothekshistoriker, war sechs Jahre lang Mitarbeiter der Universitätsbibliothek, wo er die Geheimnisse der Bibliothekskunst erkundete. Es ist auch eine Erzählung vom Alltag der BibliotheksmitarbeiterInnen, von ihren Gewohnheiten und Leidenschaften, aber auch von organisierten Veranstaltungen und Bällen. In der in zwei Teile gegliederten Publikation schilderte man das Leben in zwei Gebäuden der Universitätsbibliothek. Im ersten, alten Gebäude in der Bromberger Vorstadt wirkte die Bibliothek in den Jahren 1947–1973. Im zweiten, modernen und funktionalen Gemach in Bielany befindet sie sich seit Mai 1973 bis zum heutigen Tag. Die Veröffentlichung wird durch zahlreiche Fotografien aus den Beständen der Bibliothek und den Archiven ihrer MitarbeiterInnen ergänzt.The book constitutes a collection of memoirs referring to the University Library and its employees in the years 1971–1977. The author of the memoirs, the historian of books and libraries worked in the University Library for six years. The book is also a story about the daily life of library workers, their habits and passions, events and parties organized by them. The publication is divided into two parts, in which the life in two buildings of the university library was described. In the first old building situated in Bydgoskie Przedmieście , the library operated in the years 1947–1973. Since May 1973 the library has been located in the modern building in Bielany. The publication includes numerous photographs from the collections of the library and the archives of its workers.Książka jest zbiorem szkiców-wspomnień opowiadających o dziejach Biblioteki Uniwersyteckiej i jej pracownikach w latach 1971–1977. Janusz Tondel, autor wspomnień, historyk książki i bibliotek, przez sześć lat był pracownikiem uniwersyteckiej książnicy, w której poznawał i zgłębiał tajniki sztuki bibliotekarskiej. Jest to także opowieść o dniu codziennym pracowników biblioteki, ich przyzwyczajeniach i pasjach, ale też o organizowanych imprezach, balach. W podzielonej na dwie części publikacji zostało opisane życie w dwóch budynkach uniwersyteckiej książnicy. W pierwszym, starym gmachu położonym na Bydgoskim Przedmieściu, biblioteka działała w latach 1947–1973. W drugim, nowoczesnym i funkcjonalnym obiekcie na toruńskich Bielanach, funkcjonuje od maja 1973 r. do dnia dzisiejszego. Publikację uzupełniają liczne fotografie ze zbiorów biblioteki oraz archiwów jej pracowników

Documents from the period 1919-1939/1942 from the archive of the Stephanus Bathoreus University in Vilnius in the Lithuanian Central State Archives: contents, history and future prospects

Archiwum Uniwersytetu Stefana Batorego w Wilnie jest jednym z licznych polskich zespołów archiwalnych dotyczących okresu dwudziestolecia międzywojennego, które znajdują się w Litewskim Centralnym Archiwum Państwowym w Wilnie. I jednym z nielicznych, który zachował się niemal w całości. Przez wiele lat kolekcję uważano za zaginioną. Po 1990 r. zaczęto ją wykorzystywać do badań nad historią nauki w Wilnie. Najgłębiej zbiór jest eksploatowany przez polsko-litewski zespół badaczy przygotowujących monografię USB na 2019 r. Brak zainteresowania państwa polskiego losami archiwum spowodował, że pomimo przygotowanych projektów badawczych pozostaje ono nieuporządkowane i nieopracowane, a w dużej części wymaga natychmiastowej interwencji konserwatorskiej. Istnieje obawa, że w niedalekiej przyszłości zasób ten – po opracowaniu w języku litewskim – będzie trudno dostępny dla wielu badaczy z Polski.Along with liquidation of the Stephanus Bathoreus University (SBU) in Vilnius exe- cuted by Lithuanian authorities in December 1939 there was also closed entire files’ documentation connected with two decades of the University activity. The files were listed, wrapped up, tied up with strings and deposited in the University’s cellar. And that is how they were stored throughout entire time of the World War II. Has the Polish government tried to regain them – we do not know. After the war entire documentation was transported to the archive of Lithuanian Soviet Socialist Republic. Part of the personal files were separated and withdrawn from the set. Their fate is not clear. The documentation of the archive was not ordered and access to it was limited. It was used only by Soviet researchers. Some certified copies were also prepared e.g. for the former SBU employees and sparse inquiries of Polish archivists were answered. Not sooner than after Lithuania regained its independence in the beginning of the 90ties the SBU archive was „discovered” for the sake of the research. Researchers from Poland have drawn attention to its research value and started to use it in their research on history of Polish science in the 20th century. This research interest caused that Lithuanian archival authorities started efforts directed on ordering and describing an entire archival set, also allowing for materials’ copying and publishing. The description is done in Lithuanian language, simultaneously there is prepared research monograph on SBU
