Sustained Disease Control in DME Patients upon Treatment Cessation with Brolucizumab.
Background: Treatment cessation due to a dry retina has not been systematically addressed in diabetic macular edema (DME). In three out of four patients receiving 6 mg of brolucizumab in the KITE study, treatment was terminated after the study ended. Methods: The KITE study was a double-masked, multicenter, active-controlled, randomized trial (NCT03481660) in DME patients. Per protocol, patients received five loading injections of Brolucizumab at 6-week intervals, with the option to adjust to 8 weeks in case of disease activity or to extend in the second year to a maximum of 16 weeks in the absence of retinal fluid. Results: After two years, one patient required eight weekly injections, while three patients reached a maximal treatment interval of 16 weeks. The severity of diabetic retinopathy improved in all patients with no dye leakage according to fluorescein angiography (FA) and no retinal fluid according to OCT in three patients. Treatment was paused in these three patients for >36 months, while the fourth patient required continuous treatment at 5-week intervals after switching to other licensed anti-VEGF agents. Conclusions: The adoption of treatment according to individual needs, including considering treatment cessation, may contribute to improved treatment adherence in many patients and be more frequently possible than expected
Transport pathways of polychlorinated biphenyls in Atlantic water
The distribution of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in the surface waters of the Atlantic shows concentration maxima in latitudes of high net precipitation and a minimum in the midlatitudes. Very low PCB concentrations are found in the South Atlantic. Since the nonvolatile inorganic radionuclide distribution in the Atlantic shows no dependence on precipitation patterns, codistillation with evaporating water must be a major factor in determining the distribution of PCBs...
WIYN/Hydra Detection of Lithium Depletion in F Stars of the Young Open Cluster M35 and Implications for the Development of the Lithium Gap
We report discovery of significant depletion of Li on the surfaces of F dwarf
stars in the 150-Myr-old open cluster M35, analagous to a feature in the
700-Myr-old Hyades cluster that has been referred to as the ``Li gap.'' We have
caught the gap in the act of forming: using high resolution, high S/N,
WIYN/Hydra observations, we detect Li in all but a few M35 F stars; the maximum
depletion lies at least 0.6-0.8 dex below minimally depleted (or undepleted)
stars. The M35 Li depletion region, a) is quite wide, with clear depletion seen
from 6000K to 6700K or hotter; b) shows a significant dispersion in Li
abundance at all T_eff, even with stars of the same T_eff; and c) contains
undepleted stars (as well as depleted ones) in the (narrow) classical Hyades
gap region, which itself shows no undepleted stars. All of these M35 Li
depletion properties support rotationally-induced slow mixing as the primary
physical mechanism that forms the gap, and argues against other proposed
mechanisms, particularly diffusion and steady main sequence mass loss. When
viewed in the context of the M35 Li depletion properties, the Hyades Li gap may

Observations on the distribution of chlorinated hydrocarbons in Atlantic Ocean organisms
Industrial polychlorobiphenyls (PCBs) and the DDT family (t-DDT) were measured in several species of organisms collected from the open Atlantic Ocean between 66°N and 35°S latitude. All the organisms had higher concentrations of PCBs than t-DDT. Many trophic levels were represented in the collections, but the analytical data offer no support for food chain magnification among gilled organisms...
Black hole lasers in Bose-Einstein condensates
We consider elongated condensates that cross twice the speed of sound. In the
absence of periodic boundary conditions, the phonon spectrum possesses a
discrete and finite set of complex frequency modes that induce a laser effect.
This effect constitutes a dynamical instability and is due to the fact that the
supersonic region acts as a resonant cavity. We numerically compute the complex
frequencies and density-density correlation function. We obtain patterns with
very specific signatures. In terms of the gravitational analogy, the flows we
consider correspond to a pair of black hole and white hole horizons, and the
laser effect can be conceived as a self-amplified Hawking radiation. This is
verified by comparing the outgoing flux at early time with the standard black

WIYN Open Cluster Study XI: WIYN 3.5m Deep Photometry of M35 (NGC 2168)
We present deep BVI observations of the core of M35 and a nearby comparison
field obtained at the WIYN 3.5m telescope under excellent seeing. These
observations display the lower main sequence in BV and VI CMDs down to V = 23.3
and 24.6, respectively. At these faint magnitudes background field stars are
far more numerous than the cluster stars, yet by using a smoothing technique
and CMD density distribution subtraction we recover the cluster fiducial main
sequence and luminosity function to V = 24.6. We find the location of the main
sequence in these CMDs to be consistent with earlier work on other open
clusters, specifically NGC 188, NGC 2420, and NGC 2477. We compare these open
cluster fiducial sequences to stellar models by Baraffe et al. (1998), Siess et
al. (2000), Girardi et al. (2000), and Yi et al. (2001) and find that the
models are too blue in both B-V and V-I for stars below ~0.4 Mo. M35 contains
stars to the limit of the extracted main sequence, at M ~ 0.10-0.15 Mo,
suggesting that M35 may harbor a large number of brown dwarfs, which should be
easy targets for near-IR instrumentation on 8-10m telescopes. We also identify
a new candidate white dwarf in M35 at V = 21.36 +- 0.01. Depending on which WD
models are used to interpret this cluster candidate, it is either a very high
mass WD (1.05 +- 0.05 Mo) somewhat older (0.19-0.26 Gyr, 3-4 sigma) than our
best isochrone age (150 Myr), or it is a modestly massive WD (0.67-0.78 Mo)
much too old (0.42-0.83 Gyr) to belong to the cluster.Comment: 28 pages + 24 figures; to be published in the Sept, 2002 A
Dynamics of fluctuations in an optical analog of the Laval nozzle
Using the analogy between the description of coherent light propagation in a
medium with Kerr nonlinearity by means of nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation and
that of a dissipationless liquid we propose an optical analogue of the Laval
nozzle. The optical Laval nozzle will allow one to form a transonic flow in
which one can observe and study a very unusual dynamics of classical and
quantum fluctuations including analogue of the Hawking radiation of real black
holes. Theoretical analysis of this dynamics is supported by numerical
calculations and estimates for a possible experimental setup are presented.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure
Outbursts on normal stars. FH Leo misclassified as a novalike variable
We present high resolution spectroscopy of the common proper motion system FH
Leo (components HD 96273 and BD+07 2411B), which has been classified as a
novalike variable due to an outburst observed by Hipparcos, and we present and
review the available photometry. We show from our spectra that neither star can
possibly be a cataclysmic variable, instead they are perfectly normal late-F
and early-G stars. We measured their radial velocities and derived the
atmospheric fundamental parameters, abundances of several elements including
Fe, Ni, Cr, Co, V, Sc, Ti, Ca and Mg, and we derive the age of the system. From
our analysis we conclude that the stars do indeed constitute a physical binary.
However, the observed outburst cannot be readily explained. We examine several
explanations, including pollution with scattered light from Jupiter, binarity,
microlensing, background supernovae, interaction with unseen companions and
planetary engulfment. While no explanation is fully satisfactory, the scattered
light and star-planet interaction scenarios emerge as the least unlikely ones,

Reconstruction of a function from its spherical (circular) means with the centers lying on the surface of certain polygons and polyhedra
We present explicit filtration/backprojection-type formulae for the inversion
of the spherical (circular) mean transform with the centers lying on the
boundary of some polyhedra (or polygons, in 2D). The formulae are derived using
the double layer potentials for the wave equation, for the domains with certain
symmetries. The formulae are valid for a rectangle and certain triangles in 2D,
and for a cuboid, certain right prisms and a certain pyramid in 3D. All the
present inversion formulae yield exact reconstruction within the domain
surrounded by the acquisition surface even in the presence of exterior sources.Comment: 9 figure
