Probing the Phase-Dependent Conductance and Nonequilibrium Properties of Josephson Junctions by Means of Flux Entry into Weakly Closed Loops
Numerical simulations have shown that the relative number of flux quanta which penetrate a weakly closed superconducting loop depends upon the magnitude and sign of the phase-dependent conductance. We examine the possible use of this dependence as an experimental probe of the cosy term and nonequilibrium properties of Josephson junctions
Model of Dietary Fiber Utilization by Small Mammalian Herbivores, with Empirical Results for Neotoma
Allometric considerations have suggested that small herbivores are inefficient at or incapable of extracting energy from the microbial fermentation of structural carbohydrates. This notion is at odds with accumulating empirical evidence that demonstrates well-developed fiber digestion abilities for a number of small rodent genera. To examine the apparent inconsistency, we have constructed a model of plant fiber utilization tailored specifically for hindgut fermenters. Computer simulations provide estimates of fiber and overall dry-matter digestibilities as a function of body size, energy demand, and diet. Our calculations indicate that small mammals can obtain significant benefit from fiber fermentation, especially at moderate fiber levels. Comparisons with literature data are in general agreement, although fiber digestion abilities are still underestimated for the smallest animals. In an empirical test of the model, Neotoma obtained over 21 % of their digestible energy solely from the microbial fermentation of plant fiber. We also observed an interesting pattern of allometric sorting predicted by the model. Smaller wood rats significantly reduced the fiber content of their diet, a behavior presumably reflecting energy limitations
Comparison of Alternative Safety Net Programs for the 2000 Farm Bill
As Congress begins its debate for the 2002 farm bill, there have been calls for a counter cyclical safety net that will provide a better basis for targeting longer term planning than exists with ad hoc emergency assistance. Further subsidization of the multi-peril crop insurance (MPCI) program has been proposed, as well as reliance on a farm and ranch risk management (FARRM) account to help farmers. A whole farm revenue income support program and several variations of national income supplement programs have been put forward. A comprehensive analysis of different safety net alternatives using a common methodology is needed so farmers and policy makers can make objective comparisons. The objective of this paper is to quantitatively analyze the economic effects of alternative safety net/insurance programs on farmers in the Southern United States. The objective is accomplished by simulating representative crop farms in the South over the 2001-2005 planning horizon for alternative safety net options. The simulated net present value distributions for the farms are compared using certainty equivalents to determine the value of alternative safety net options to feed grain, cotton and rice farms in the South.Agricultural and Food Policy,

Historical reconstruction of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation from the ECMWF operational ocean reanalysis
A reconstruction of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (MOC) for the period 1959–2006 has been derived from the ECMWF operational ocean reanalysis. The reconstruction shows a wide range of time-variability, including a downward trend. At 26N, both the MOC intensity and changes in its vertical structure are in good agreement with previous estimates based on trans-Atlantic surveys. At 50N, the MOC and strength of the subpolar gyre are correlated at interannual time scales, but show opposite secular trends. Heat transport variability is highly correlated with the MOC but shows a smaller trend due to the warming of the upper ocean, which partially compensates for the weakening of the circulation. Results from sensitivity experiments show that although the time-varying upper boundary forcing provides useful MOC information, the sequential assimilation of ocean data further improves the MOC estimation by increasing both the mean and the time variability

Tracking Back References in a Write-Anywhere File System
Many file systems reorganize data on disk, for example to
defragment storage, shrink volumes, or migrate data between
different classes of storage. Advanced file system features such as snapshots, writable clones, and deduplication make these tasks complicated, as moving a single block may require finding and updating dozens, or even hundreds, of pointers to it.
We present Backlog, an efficient implementation of explicit back references, to address this problem. Back references are file system meta-data that map physical block numbers to the data objects that use them. We show that by using LSM-Trees and exploiting the write-anywhere behavior of modern file systems such as NetApp R WAFL R or btrfs, we can maintain back reference meta-data with minimal overhead (one extra disk I/O per 102 block operations) and provide excellent query performance for the common case of queries covering ranges of physically adjacent blocks.Engineering and Applied Science
Handbook of X-Ray Astronomy
X-ray astronomy was born in the aftermath of World War II as military rockets were repurposed to lift radiation detectors above the atmosphere for a few minutes at a time. These early flights detected and studied X-ray emission from the Solar corona. The first sources beyond the Solar System were detected during a rocket flight in 1962 by a team headed by Riccardo Giaccom at American Science and Engineering, a company founded by physicists from MIT. The rocket used Geiger counters with a system designed to reduce non-X-ray backgrounds and collimators limiting the region of sky seen by the counters. As the rocket spun, the field of view (FOV) happened to pass over what was later found to be the brightest non-Solar X-ray source; later designated See X-1. It also detected a uniform background glow which could not be resolved into individual sources. A follow-up campaign using X-ray detectors with better spatial resolution and optical telescopes identified See X-1 as an interacting binary with a compact (neutron star) primary. This success led to further suborbital rocket flights by a number of groups. More X-ray binaries were discovered, as well as X-ray emission from supernova remnants, the radio galaxies M87 and Cygnus-A, and the Coma cluster. Detectors were improved and Geiger counters were replaced by proportional counters, which provided information about energy spectra of the sources. Regioselective chlorination of phenols in the presence of tetrahydrothiopyran derivatives
Four six-membered cyclic sulfides, namely tetrahydrothiopyran, 3-methyltetrahydrothiopyran, 4-methyltetrahydrothiopyran and 4,4-dimethyltetrahyrdrothiopyran have been used as moderators in chlorination reactions of various phenols with sulfuryl chloride in the presence of aluminum or ferric chloride. On chlorination of phenol, ortho-cresol and meta-cresol the para/ortho chlorination ratios and yields of the para-chloro isomers are higher than when no cyclic sulfide is used for all of the cyclic sulfides, but chlorination of meta-xylenol is less consistent, with some cyclic sulfides producing higher p/o ratios and others producing lower ratios than reactions having no sulfide present
