Effects of fatigue on technique during 5 km road running
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of fatigue on kinematic parameters during a 5 km road race, and to establish how men and women fatigue differently. 17 highly competitive distance runners (9 male, 8 female) were videoed (50 Hz) as they completed the English National 5 km championships. Three-dimensional kinematic data were analysed using motion analysis software (SIMI, Munich). Data were recorded at 950 m, 2,400 m, and 3,850 m. Repeated measures ANOVA showed a significant decrease in speed (p < 0.01) which occurred due to both decreased step length and cadence (p < 0.05). Differences in speed, step length and contact time between men and women were found (p < 0.05). Athletes can reduce the risk of fatigue by using appropriate racing tactics
Drawing Boundaries
In “On Drawing Lines on a Map” (1995), I suggested that the different ways we have of drawing lines on maps open up a new perspective on ontology, resting on a distinction between two sorts of boundaries: fiat and bona fide. “Fiat” means, roughly: human-demarcation-induced. “Bona fide” means, again roughly: a boundary constituted by some real physical discontinuity. I presented a general typology of boundaries based on this opposition and showed how it generates a corresponding typology of the different sorts of objects which boundaries determine or demarcate. In this paper, I describe how the theory of fiat boundaries has evolved since 1995, how it has been applied in areas such as property law and political geography, and how it is being used in contemporary work in formal and applied ontology, especially within the framework of Basic Formal Ontology

Active joints for microrobot limbs
The authors propose an electrostatic actuator for active joints. The active joint consists of two plates, one of which is a bilayer and bent by the bimorph effect. The plates are clamped to each other at one edge. A voltage between the plates leads to a very large field at the clamp where the plates are in intimate contact, thereby producing a force large enough to pull the bent bimorph cantilever beam to the other plate. The design uses an actuator in which large electrical forces acting over a short distance are used to produce large deflections. An appealing application of this actuation principle is seen in active joints for robot arms, e.g. by attaching members to the actuator and by combining two or more active joints and members to form micro robot arms, legs and grippers
Formation of Topological Black holes from Gravitational Collapse
We consider the gravitational collapse of a dust cloud in an asymptotically
anti de Sitter spacetime in which points connected by a discrete subgroup of an
isometry subgroup of anti de Sitter spacetime are identified. We find that
black holes with event horizons of any topology can form from the collapse of
such a cloud. The quasilocal mass parameter of such black holes is proportional
to the initial density, which can be arbitrarily small.Comment: latex, 16 pages, four postscript figure

A computer program (program LEE) has been developed to calculate the fully coupled solution of the radiating viscous stagnation streamline flow with strong blowing. The report describes the digital computer program, including FORTRAN IV listing, flow charts, instructions for the user, and a test case with input and output. Program LEE is available through COSMIC
Optimized bolted joint
A method is disclosed for joining segments of the skin of an aircraft. The ends of the skin are positioned in close proximity or abutt each other. The skin is of constant thickness throughout the joint and is sandwiched between splice plates, which taper in thickness from the last to the first bolt rows in order to reduce the stiffness of the splice plate and thereby reduce the load transfer at the location where bypass loads are the highest
Some Properties of Amplitudes at Multi Boson Thresholds in Spontaneously Broken Scalar Theory
It is shown that in a theory of one real scalar field with
spontaneous breaking of symmetry a calculation of the amplitudes of production
by a virtual field of on-mass-shell bosons all being exactly at rest
is equivalent in any order of the loop expansion to a Euclidean space
calculation of the mean field of a kink-type configuration. Using this
equivalence it is found that all the amplitudes have no absorptive
part at the thresholds to any order of perturbation theory. This implies
non-trivial relations between multi-boson threshold production amplitudes. In
particular the on-mass-shell amplitude of the process should vanish
at the threshold in all loops. It is also shown that the factor in the amplitudes at the threshold is not eliminated by loop effects.Comment: 11 pages including 3 figures, LaTeX, TPI-MINN-92/61-
