Young voices: New perspectives
In this paper the authors report on the findings of a three-year research project funded by the Australian Council for Research and the Australian Council for the Arts under the ARC Linkages grant scheme. The project sought to explore the meaning, value and purpose of the arts in Australian children's lives, including their descriptions of participation, and to develop research methods and techniques sensitive to children's ways of communicating and constructing meaning. The project has provided rich data regarding children's perspectives of the arts as they are experienced and practiced in school, family, community and youth arts settings. These perceptions are presented throughout the paper using the voices of the children who were interviewed. The emergent findings hold implications for policy and practice in the arts and education sectors
