    Industry Implications of Value Creation and Appropriation Investment Decisions

    As managers weigh their resource investment decisions, we argue that these investments have a direct impact on the growth and volatility of the firm’s industry. With data covering 377 industries across 16 years, we investigate relationships for aggregate firm investments on the growth and volatility of industry profit and sales. Results reveal important, complex relationships between investment in value creation and appropriation and different elements of the industry environment

    Performance Implications of Firm Resource Interactions in the Acquisition of R&D-Intensive Firms

    We explore the role of resource interactions in explaining firm performance in the context of acquisitions. Although we confirm that acquisitions do not lead to higher performance on average, we do find that complementary resource profiles in target and acquiring firms are associated with abnormal returns. Specifically, we find that acquiring firm marketing resources and target firm technology resources positively reinforce (complement) each other; meanwhile, acquiring and target firm technology resources negatively reinforce (substitute) one another. Implications for management theory and practice are identified

    Enhancing crowdsourcing success: the role of creative and deliberate problem-solving styles

    A growing number of firms are using crowdsourcing platforms to actively solicit the skills of external entities to help them solve innovation-related problems. Despite its increasing popularity, crowdsourcing has produced mixed success, because few external experts provide helpful solutions. The current research examines this issue by exploring why some external solvers are more successful than others. Grounded in dual-processing theory, this study combines survey and archival data to assess the impact of creative versus deliberate problem-solving styles on solving success. The results indicate that both styles can be effective, but their relative success depends on the amount of time a solver invests in a solution and his or her degree of contextual familiarity with the problem. Specifically, creative (deliberate) styles are more effective under conditions of high (low) contextual familiarity and shorter (longer) time investments.     Measuring new product and service portfolio advantage

    The current study introduces the concept of new product and service portfolio (NPSP) advantage by creating and validating a three-dimensional measurement method that reflects novelty, meaningfulness and superiority – the three characteristics of NPSP advantage. Based on industry-wide homogeneous generalizable quantitative data from 108 manufacturing companies, the results indicate that these three characteristics of NPSP – novelty, meaningfulness and superiority – are distinct characteristics that together constitute NPSP advantage. This paper contributes to the literature on new product development, as its findings suggest that when measuring the concept of NPSP advantage, the three-dimensional construct that includes the three aforementioned characteristics has a better fit to the data than the unidimensional structure. Because it considers both new products and services, the current study offers an integrated approach to measure the desired innovation process outcome (NPSP advantage).     Green Claims and Message Frames: How Green New Products Change Brand Attitude

    In response to a top ten global consumer trend, firms are increasingly introducing environmentally sustainable (“green”) new products. Firms allocate significant resources to this area; thus, the authors consider the brand-level implications by investigating how the introduction of green new products changes attitude toward the brand. In examining this relationship, they draw from social identity and framing theories to investigate drivers of green new product introductions as well as the moderating effects of message framing, source credibility, and product type. Estimating a three-stage least squares model based on new product introductions from 75 brands across a four-year time period (2009–2012), the authors find that green new product introductions can indeed improve brand attitude and that both the brand and category's positioning influence the introduction of green new products. They also find that the quantity of green messages, the product type, and their source credibility influence the extent to which green new products change brand attitude. The authors use these findings to provide guidance for managers as they attempt to effectively link their green innovation efforts to improve consumer attitudes toward their brands. </jats:p

    Web-based dietary assessment and advice helps inflammatory bowel disease patients to improve their diet quality

    Time to evaluate diet quality and give dietary advice is limited in clinical IBD practice. The Eetscore is a web-based tool that assesses diet quality according to the Dutch dietary guidelines and provides personalised dietary advice. We aimed to assess diet quality of IBD patients using the Eetscore and to study changes in diet quality, health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and clinical disease activity over time. A prospective cohort study was performed in 195 adult IBD patients. Participants were invited to fill out questionnaires (Eetscore-FFQ, short IBDQ and p-HBI/p-SCCAI) at baseline and after 1 and 4 months. The Eetscore calculates diet quality based on 16 food components (10 points per component, total score 0-160; the higher the better) and provides dietary advice per component based on the assessment. At baseline, mean diet quality was 98±19. Diet quality was positively associated with age, female gender and level of education. Component scores were highest for red meat, wholegrain products, and sweetened beverages, and lowest for legumes, nuts, and processed meat. Over time, diet quality increased to 107±21 at 4 months (p<0.001). Each 10-point improvement in diet quality was associated with an increase in HRQoL (β=0.4 (95%CI 0.02; 0.7), p=0.04). Clinical disease activity did not change. In conclusion, diet quality of IBD patients significantly improved following personalised dietary advice of the Eetscore. Improvement of diet quality was associated with a slight improvement in HRQoL. The Eetscore is a practical and useful tool to monitor and support a healthy diet in IBD patients
