Quantum Chemistry, Anomalous Dimensions, and the Breakdown of Fermi Liquid Theory in Strongly Correlated Systems
We formulate a local picture of strongly correlated systems as a Feynman sum
over atomic configurations. The hopping amplitudes between these atomic
configurations are identified as the renormalization group charges, which
describe the local physics at different energy scales. For a metallic system
away from half-filling, the fixed point local Hamiltonian is a generalized
Anderson impurity model in the mixed valence regime. There are three types of
fixed points: a coherent Fermi liquid (FL) and two classes of self-similar
(scale invariant) phases which we denote incoherent metallic states (IMS). When
the transitions between the atomic configurations proceed coherently at low
energies, the system is a Fermi liquid. Incoherent transitions between the low
energy atomic configurations characterize the incoherent metallic states. The
initial conditions for the renormalization group flow are determined by the
physics at rather high energy scales. This is the domain of local quantum
chemistry. We use simple quantum chemistry estimates to specify the basin of
attraction of the IMS fixed points.Comment: 12 pages, REVTE
Hall effect in heavy-fermion metals
The heavy fermion systems present a unique platform in which strong
electronic correlations give rise to a host of novel, and often competing,
electronic and magnetic ground states. Amongst a number of potential
experimental tools at our disposal, measurements of the Hall effect have
emerged as a particularly important one in discerning the nature and evolution
of the Fermi surfaces of these enigmatic metals. In this article, we present a
comprehensive review of Hall effect measurements in the heavy-fermion
materials, and examine the success it has had in contributing to our current
understanding of strongly correlated matter. Particular emphasis is placed on
its utility in the investigation of quantum critical phenomena which are
thought to drive many of the exotic electronic ground states in these systems.
This is achieved by the description of measurements of the Hall effect across
the putative zero-temperature instability in the archetypal heavy-fermion metal
YbRhSi. Using the CeIn (with Co, Ir) family of systems as
a paradigm, the influence of (antiferro-)magnetic fluctuations on the Hall
effect is also illustrated. This is compared to prior Hall effect measurements
in the cuprates and other strongly correlated systems to emphasize on the
generality of the unusual magnetotransport in materials with non-Fermi liquid
behavior.Comment: manuscript accepted in Adv. Phy
Kosterlitz-Thouless Transition and Short Range Spatial Correlations in an Extended Hubbard Model
We study the competition between intersite and local correlations in a
spinless two-band extended Hubbard model by taking an alternative limit of
infinite dimensions. We find that the intersite density fluctuations suppress
the charge Kondo energy scale and lead to a Fermi liquid to non-Fermi liquid
transition for repulsive on-site density-density interactions. In the absence
of intersite interactions, this transition reduces to the known
Kosterlitz-Thouless transition. We show that a new line of non-Fermi liquid
fixed points replace those of the zero intersite interaction problem.Comment: 11 pages, 2 figure
Variation in ecosystem service values in response to land use changes in Zhifanggou watershed of Loess plateau: a comparative study
Background: Anthropological activities could lead to various land use changes. This subsequently exerts impacts on the Ecological status as the land is the carrier of Ecosystems and their services. Ecosystem Services Values (ESVs) are monetary assessment of ecosystems services. The choice of ecosystem services valuation methods highly depends on the type and conditions of the ecological environment.
Results: In this paper, Zhifangou watershed, a watershed with fragile environments in Loess Plateau, is analyzed in terms of the historical changes of land uses and their impact on Ecosystem Services Values (ESVs). The analysis presents that the watershed had seen a large cover of forest (689.8 hectare) and grassland (97.08 hectare) until 1938, which were substituted with a cropland of 663.56 hectare in the following years, and then a gradual recovery of natural land from 1978. During these years, the human activities have ranged from little disruption, to excessive cultivation, and finally to an integrated management of the watershed. The ESVs were highest at 43.75 × 104 in 1958, and then rebounded to $113.44 × 104 in 1999.
Conclusions: The analysis reveals that the values of soil formation and retention, biodiversity protection, and climate regulation have been associated with the largest share of the total ESVs. Among them, soil formation and retention was recognized as the most impacted service by land use changes
Correlation Induced Insulator to Metal Transitions
We study a spinless two-band model at half-filling in the limit of infinite
dimensions. The ground state of this model in the non-interacting limit is a
band-insulator. We identify transitions to a metal and to a charge-Mott
insulator, using a combination of analytical, Quantum Monte Carlo, and zero
temperature recursion methods. The metallic phase is a non-Fermi liquid state
with algebraic local correlation functions with universal exponents over a
range of parameters.Comment: 12 pages, REVTE
One dimensional chain of quantum molecule motors as a mathematical physics model for muscle fibre
A quantum chain model of many molecule motors is proposed as a mathematical
physics theory on the microscopic modeling of classical force-velocity relation
and tension transients of muscle fibre. We proposed quantum many-particle
Hamiltonian to predict the force-velocity relation for the slow release of
muscle fibre which has no empirical relation yet, it is much more complicate
than hyperbolic relation. Using the same Hamiltonian, we predicted the
mathematical force-velocity relation when the muscle is stimulated by
alternative electric current. The discrepancy between input electric frequency
and the muscle oscillation frequency has a physical understanding by Doppler
effect in this quantum chain model. Further more, we apply quantum physics
phenomena to explore the tension time course of cardiac muscle and insect
flight muscle. Most of the experimental tension transients curves found their
correspondence in the theoretical output of quantum two-level and three-level
model. Mathematically modeling electric stimulus as photons exciting a quantum
three-level particle reproduced most tension transient curves of water bug

Non-Fermi Liquids in the Extended Hubbard Model
I summarize recent work on non-Fermi liquids within certain generalized
Anderson impurity model as well as in the large dimensionality () limit of
the two-band extended Hubbard model. The competition between local charge and
spin fluctuations leads either to a Fermi liquid with renormalized
quasiparticle excitations, or to non-Fermi liquids with spin-charge separation.
These results provide new insights into the phenomenological similarities and
differences between different correlated metals. While presenting these
results, I outline a general strategy of local approach to non-Fermi liquids in
correlated electron systems.Comment: 30 pages, REVTEX, 14 figures included. To appear in ``Non Fermi

Unconventional and conventional quantum criticalities in CeRhIrIn
An appropriate description of the state of matter that appears as a second
order phase transition is tuned toward zero temperature, {\it viz.}
quantum-critical point (QCP), poses fundamental and still not fully answered
questions. Experiments are needed both to test basic conclusions and to guide
further refinement of theoretical models. Here, charge and entropy transport
properties as well as AC specific heat of the heavy-fermion compound
CeRhIrIn, measured as a function of pressure, reveal two
qualitatively different QCPs in a {\it single} material driven by a {\it
single} non-symmetry-breaking tuning parameter. A discontinuous sign-change
jump in thermopower suggests an unconventional QCP at accompanied by
an abrupt Fermi-surface reconstruction that is followed by a conventional
spin-density-wave critical point at across which the Fermi surface
evolves smoothly to a heavy Fermi-liquid state. These experiments are
consistent with some theoretical predictions, including the sequence of
critical points and the temperature dependence of the thermopower in their
vicinity.Comment: 21+3 pages, 4+2 figures. Change the title, figures et a
A grid-based infrastructure for distributed retrieval
In large-scale distributed retrieval, challenges of latency, heterogeneity, and dynamicity emphasise the importance of infrastructural support in reducing the development costs of state-of-the-art solutions. We present a service-based infrastructure for distributed retrieval which blends middleware facilities and a design framework to ‘lift’ the resource sharing approach and the computational services of a European Grid platform into the domain of e-Science applications. In this paper, we give an overview of the DILIGENT Search Framework and illustrate its exploitation in the field of Earth Science
Effect of conduction electron interactions on Anderson impurities
The effect of conduction electron interactions for an Anderson impurity is
investigated in one dimension using a scaling approach. The flow diagrams are
obtained by solving the renormalization group equations numerically. It is
found that the Anderson impurity case is different from its counterpart -- the
Kondo impurity case even in the local moment region. The Kondo temperature for
an Anderson impurity shows nonmonotonous behavior, increasing for weak
interactions but decreasing for strong interactions. The implication of the
study to other related impurity models is also discussed.Comment: 10 pages, revtex, 4 figures (the postscript file is included), to
