Optically activated magnetic recording tape
Optically activated data storage medium visually and electromagnetically reproduces a recorded signal. In an electric field, particles in heat-fluidized thermoplastic layer form a visible image of the recorded signal. Refluidizing the thermoplastic layer erases the signals. Very high data packing densities are achieved
Method and apparatus for producing an image from a transparent object
The contrast produced from a photographic transparency is controlled by placing the transparency between a pair of partially reflecting mirrors forming walls of an optical cavity. Mirrors trap a collimated laser beam illuminating the transparency so that at least a portion of the beam energy is passed through the transparency plural times. The distance that the light beam travels between the mirrors is controlled as a function of the wavelength of the beam energy to control the phase of light interference in the beam passing through the transparency, thereby controlling the intensity of the beam derived from the mirror downstream of the transparency
Noise diffraction patterns eliminated in coherent optical systems
Lens rotation technique of noise diffraction pattern elimination spreads diffracted energy, normally concentrated over small area of image, over much larger annular area. Technique advantages include simplified lens selecting process, reduced clean room requirements, and low cost equipment requirements
Secondary electron emission from sodium chloride, glass and aluminum oxide at various temperature
The method of single impulses was used to measure the coefficients of the secondary electronic emission for 2 types of Al2O2, monocrystalline NaCl and glass at different temperatures and for different values of the energy of the primary electrons. The value of the secondary electron emission does not depend upon temperature. The effect of a gas film on the value of the secondary electron emission was detected
Elimination of coherent noise in a coherent light imaging system
Optical imaging systems using coherent light introduce objectionable noise into the output image plane. Dust and bubbles on and in lenses cause most of the noise in the output image. This noise usually appears as bull's-eye diffraction patterns in the image. By rotating the lens about the optical axis these diffraction patterns can be essentially eliminated. The technique does not destroy the spatial coherence of the light and permits spatial filtering of the input plane
Using tasks to explore teacher knowledge in situation-specific contexts
This article was published in the journal, Journal of Mathematics Teacher Education [© Springer] and the original publication is available at www.springerlink.comResearch often reports an overt discrepancy between theoretically/out-of context expressed teacher beliefs about mathematics and pedagogy and actual practice. In order to explore teacher knowledge in situation-specific contexts we have engaged mathematics teachers with classroom scenarios (Tasks) which: are hypothetical but grounded on learning and teaching issues that previous research and experience have highlighted as seminal; are likely to occur in actual practice; have purpose and utility; and, can be used both in (pre- and in-service) teacher education and research through generating access to teachers’ views and intended practices. The Tasks have the following structure: reflecting upon the learning objectives within a mathematical problem (and solving it); examining a flawed (fictional) student solution; and, describing, in writing, feedback to the student. Here we draw on the written responses to one Task (which involved reflecting on solutions of x+x−1=0 of 53 Greek in-service mathematics teachers in order to demonstrate the range of teacher knowledge (mathematical, didactical and pedagogical) that engagement with these tasks allows us to explore
Entry in the ADHD drugs market: Welfare impact of generics and me-toos
Recent decades have seen a growth in treatments for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) including many branded and generic drugs. In the early 2000's, new drug entry dramatically altered market shares. We estimate a demand system for ADHD drugs and assess the welfare impact of new drugs. We find that entry induced large welfare gains by reducing prices of substitute drugs, and by providing alternative delivery mechanisms for existing molecules. Our results suggest that the success of follow-on patented drugs may come from unanticipated innovations like delivery mechanisms, a factor ignored by proposals to retard new follow-on drug approvals
COVID-19 and non-COVID ARDS patients demonstrate a distinct response to low dose steroids- A retrospective observational study
Patients with COVID-19 ARDS have distinct physiological and immunological phenotypes compared to patients with non-COVID ARDS. Patients with COVID-19 ARDS (n = 32) had a significant improvement in PaO2: FiO2 ratio (p = 0.046) following low-dose steroid treatment, unlike patients with non-COVID ARDS (n = 16) (p = 0.529). Patients with COVID-19 ARDS had a greater fall in CRP compared to patients with non-COVID ARDS, albeit not statistically significant (p = 0.07). Our novel findings highlight differences in the underlying physiological and immunological phenotypes between COVID-19 and non-COVID ARDS, with implications for future ARDS studies
The matrix Kadomtsev--Petviashvili equation as a source of integrable nonlinear equations
A new integrable class of Davey--Stewartson type systems of nonlinear partial
differential equations (NPDEs) in 2+1 dimensions is derived from the matrix
Kadomtsev--Petviashvili equation by means of an asymptotically exact nonlinear
reduction method based on Fourier expansion and spatio-temporal rescaling. The
integrability by the inverse scattering method is explicitly demonstrated, by
applying the reduction technique also to the Lax pair of the starting matrix
equation and thereby obtaining the Lax pair for the new class of systems of
equations. The characteristics of the reduction method suggest that the new
systems are likely to be of applicative relevance. A reduction to a system of
two interacting complex fields is briefly described.Comment: arxiv version is already officia
