Novel Multifunctional Magnetic Inorganic Composites: Synthesis and Characterization
We report the preparation of a series of new magnetic inorganic composites (MICs) with tuneable magnetic and mechanical properties. In the field of power inductive components and inductive heating, they could transfer energy with high robustness and excellent performances. Moreover, they may mitigate electromagnetic interference (EMI) in the LF and MF band. The MICs have been prepared using an alkaline or acidic activation process carried out in the presence of commercial magnetic micrometric particles made of anisotropic and isotropic Sr-ferrite. Three different matrices have been prepared, varying the type of activator, slag addition, water content, and aggregates

Novel Correlations between Spectroscopic and Morphological Properties of Activated Carbons from Waste Coffee Grounds
Massive quantities of spent coffee grounds (SCGs) are generated by users around the world.
Different processes have been proposed for SCG valorization, including pyrolytic processes to achieve carbonaceous materials. Here, we report the preparation of activated carbons through pyrolytic processes carried out under different experimental conditions and in the presence of various porosity activators. Textural and chemical characterization of the obtained carbons have been achieved through Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), ESEM, 13C solid state NMR, XPS, XRD, thermogravimetric and spectroscopic determinations. The aim of the paper is to relate these data to the preparation method, evaluating the correlation between the spectroscopic data and the physical and textural properties, also in comparison with the corresponding data obtained for three commercial activated carbons used in industrial adsorption processes. Some correlations have been observed between the Raman and XPS data
The Role of the Rodent Insula in Anxiety
The human insula has been consistently reported to be overactivated in all anxiety disorders, activation which has been suggested to be proportional to the level of anxiety and shown to decrease with effective anxiolytic treatment. Nonetheless, studies evaluating the direct role of the insula in anxiety are lacking. Here, we set out to investigate the role of the rodent insula in anxiety by either inactivating different insular regions via microinjections of glutamatergic AMPA receptor antagonist CNQX or activating them by microinjection of GABA receptor antagonist bicuculline in rats, before measuring anxiety-like behavior using the elevated plus maze. Inactivation of caudal and medial insular regions induced anxiogenic effects, while their activation induced anxiolytic effects. In contrast, inactivation of more rostral areas induced anxiolytic effects and their activation, anxiogenic effects. These results suggest that the insula in the rat has a role in the modulation of anxiety-like behavior in rats, showing regional differences; rostral regions have an anxiogenic role, while medial and caudal regions have an anxiolytic role, with a transition area around bregma +0.5. The present study suggests that the insula has a direct role in anxiety

Optimization and mechanical-physical characterization of geopolymers with construction and demolition waste (CDW) aggregates for construction products
The paper presents the mechanical and physical characterization of a metakaolin-slag-fly ash-potassium silicate geopolymer mortar embedding inorganic recycled aggregates from Construction and Demolition Waste (CDW). The binder was holistically optimized to comply with the pilot plant requirements for producing architectural panels of satisfactory quality, among them: reduced viscosity, minimum open time of 1 h, use of commercial reagents, sufficient strength and limited shrinkage. Size and aspect ratio of small scale cylindrical specimens were investigated in compression, comparing the performance of tested geopolymers to available provisions for natural rocks, cement concrete and mortars. Empirical correlations between compressive and splitting tensile strength were calibrated through the results of about 130 geopolymer mixtures produced in former and current activities. Lastly, the suitability of reusing geopolymers at their end-of-life as recycled aggregates in a new geopolymer production was preliminarily assessed to explore the feasibility of a closed-loop process
