Trust In Personal And Impersonal Forms Its Antecedents And Consequences: A Conceptual Analysis Within Organizational Context

Although Mayer et al.’s (1995) integrative model of organizational trust has clarified some confusion regarding the concept of interpersonal trust involving two specific parties by differentiating between factors that cause trust, trust itself, and outcomes of trust through 1) it defined trust as the willingness of a party to be vulnerable to the actions of another party,2) trust is in turn influenced by a trustor’s propensity to trust, the trustor’s perceived characteristics of a trustee (e.g., trustworthiness of trustee based on his/her ability, benevolence, and  integrity), 3) the trust leads to actual risk taking in a relationship since behavioral trust is the assuming of risk, and 4), the desired outcome results from the result of risk taking. But researchers like Luhman (1979), McCauley & Kuhnert (1992), Zaheer et al.(1998), Costigan et al.(1998), McKnight et al.(1998,2002), and Atkinson and Butcher( 2003) are of the view that root of trust lies in individual relationships is not in opposition to the experience of trust both inside interpersonal relationships and as an institutional phenomenon beyond interpersonal relationships. Moreover, Colquitt et al.(2007) investigated, it remains unclear that which trust antecedents have the strongest relationships with trust whether trust fully mediates the effects of trustworthiness and trust propensity on behavioral outcomes, and do trust relationship vary according to whether the trustee is a leader versus a coworker? Therefore, the aim of this conceptual paper is to investigate the phenomenon of trust in its personal and impersonal forms i.e., interpersonal and institutional(organizational) trust with multiple foci i.e. coworkers, supervisor, and institution(organization) through addressing threefold agenda; (1) to explore the concept of trust by distinguishing its antecedents i.e., trustor’s propensity to trust, the trustor’s perceived characteristics of a trustee, and institutional trust from trust, (2) to explore whether trust fully mediates the effects of trustworthiness, trust propensity, and institutional trust on behavioral outcomes such as organizational commitment, organizational citizenship behavior, and employees task performance, and (3) to explore that do trust relationships vary according to whether the trustee is a supervisor/leader versus a coworker

Both competitive rivalry and internal communication play a crucial role for a business to position itself in a favourable manner in order to succeed particularly in a hostile environment. While numerous studies present the importance of competitive rivalry and of communication, even internal communication separately, little is known about the specific linkage of how competitive rivalry affects communication in the literature. Within the framework of internal communication, this study focuses on the notion that competitive rivalry is related to the path and style of communication as well as to the usage of internal communication tools but not to quality of communication. Thus, our research presents the linkage and the interaction between competitive rivalry and internal communication, of which the results indicate that, overall, competitive rivalry has a significant direct positive influence on internal communication dimensions in terms of path, style and quality of communication, as well as usage of communication tools in healthcare organizations

The purpose of this study is to re-conceptualize the relationship quality that occurs in buyer-seller exchanges within the international trade context. In relevant literature, extensive work has been done to define the relationship quality; however its particular aspects pertaining to international transactions require further examination. This study's conceptual inferences, which are derived from the current knowledge, have been tested by an empirical research. The scope of the research is the exchanges between exporting firms in Turkey and their customers abroad. In this respect, a quantitative research design is employed and data is collected from the sample group through a survey. Based on 165 observations, the findings support the approach that relationship quality in international trade is composed of trust, satisfaction, and relational learning dimensions. The research makes a theoretical contribution by highlighting the importance of neglected relational learning concept in inter-firm relationship quality research in the context of international exchanges

Relationship learning in buyer-supplier exchanges: A conceptual model for complex environments

    No full text
The purpose of this study is to propose a conceptual model that reflects interfirm exchanges can work well even under complex and tough conditions. Despite the general notion implying the negative impacts of environmental volatility and contextual distance between firms on interfirm relationships; this paper attempts to point out how that effect might be positive in buyer-supplier exchanges. Departing from the perspectives favoring diversity, the model proposes that dissimilarities between organizations create learning potential, which would be realized by intense communication between firms along with their motivation and transparency to do so. The model actually speculates on the antecedents and facilitators of learning in business-to-business exchanges. This study is expected to make a conceptual contribution, especially to the debate on inter-organizational distance through the contingency view. (C) 2016 The Authors. Published by Elsevier Ltd

    No full text
In this study, the "family-power, experience, culture (F-PEC)" scale that assesses family influence, was subjected. The first purpose of the study is to find out the extent to which the "F-PEC scale" that is observed to be used to measure family influence concept in international literature, is suitable for family businesses in Turkey. The second purpose of the study is to find out whether family influence facts affect the ideas of top managers about the managers who are "family members". A research was conducted for these purposes at October 2009. In the research, the family businesses that are present in eight organized industrial zones of Istanbul were considered and questionnaires were applied to the family members, who are the top managers of these businesses. While family influence depends on the items of F-PEC; the view about the managers, who are family members, was formed by the items derived from the relevant literature. According to results obtained, the F-PEC scale isn't exactly suitable for family businesses in the sample. Also, some of the family influence facts can affect top managers' ideas about the managers who are family members

The relation between competitive tension and strategic innovation

    No full text
The main object of this paper is to shed light on the relationship between competitive tension and strategic innovation. Competitive tension being the strain between a focal firm and a given rival that is likely to result in the firm taking action against the rival may have another strategic consequence which affects innovativeness of the firm. Drawing on the awareness-motivation-capability perspective, we tried to show how perceived competitive tension, as constructed from managers' and industry stakeholders' competitor assessments, is influenced by the independent effects of three factors: relative scale, rival's attack volume, and rival's capability to contest This study also attempts to find the influence of competitive tension on strategic innovation decisions and implementation. A quantitative research design was employed. The research results indicate that competitive tension has direct effects on not only attack to rival but also on innovation decisions and implementation. Linking strategic and market orientations to organizational performance: the role of innovation in private healthcare organizations

    No full text
Scholars have been extensively researching the link between strategic and market orientations and organizational performance and the link between innovativeness and organizational performance in various different settings. Given the centrality of those orientations and of innovativeness to the organizational performance in both manufacturing and service industries, scholars do not focus on the missing link of innovativeness among the relationship of those orientations with the performance, particularly in a service industry. Thus, this study aspiresto be the bridge among those variables in a highly competitive environment in developing country of whose results indicate that innovativeness is largely dependent on market orientation and seems to be playing a mediator role to drive organizational performance in private healthcare organizations. However, it does not support the link between strategic orientation and innovativeness as well as organizational performance. Thus, strategic orientation seems not to be a descriptive variable for and have interaction with organizational performance as well as innovativeness although they are highly correlated to each other
