Hamiltonian mappings and circle packing phase spaces
We introduce three area preserving maps with phase space structures which
resemble circle packings. Each mapping is derived from a kicked Hamiltonian
system with one of three different phase space geometries (planar, hyperbolic
or spherical) and exhibits an infinite number of coexisting stable periodic

A COMPARISON OF IN VIVO CELLULAR RESPONSES TO CS-137 GAMMA RAYS AND 320-KV X RAYS
Research reported here relates to comparing the relative effectiveness of 320-kV X rays compared to Cs-137 gamma rays for two in vivo endpoints in C.B-17 mice after whole-body exposure: (1) cytotoxicity to bone marrow cells and splenocytes evaluated at 24-hours post exposure and (2) bone marrow and spleen reconstitution deficits (repopulation short- falls) evaluated at 6 weeks post exposure. We show that cytotoxicity dose-response rela- tionships for bone marrow cells and splenocytes are complex, involving negative curvature (decreasing slope as dose increases), presumably implicating a mixed cell population com- prised of large numbers of hypersensitive, modestly radiosensitive, and resistant cells. The radiosensitive cells appear to respond with 50% being killed by a dose \u3c 0.5 Gy. The X-ray relative biological effectiveness (RBE), relative to gamma rays, for destroying bone mar- row cells in vivo is \u3e 1, while for destroying splenocytes it is \u3c 1. In contrast, dose-response relationships for reconstitution deficits in the bone marrow and spleen of C.B-17 mice at 6 weeks after radiation exposure were of the threshold type with gamma rays being more effective in causing reconstitution deficit
Premature mortality in refractory partial epilepsy: does surgical treatment make a difference?
Background: Epilepsy carries an increased risk of premature death. For some people with intractable focal epilepsy, surgery offers hope for a seizure-free life. The authors aimed to see whether epilepsy surgery influenced mortality in people with intractable epilepsy. Methods: The authors audited survival status in two cohorts (those who had surgery and those who had presurgical assessment but did not have surgery). Results: There were 40 known deaths in the non-surgical group (3365 person years of follow-up) and 19 in the surgical group (3905 person-years of follow-up). Non-operated patients were 2.4 times (95% CI 1.4 to 4.2) as likely to die as those who had surgery. They were 4.5 times (95% CI 1.9 to 10.9) as likely to die a probable epilepsy-related death. In the surgical group, those with ongoing seizures 1 year after surgery were 4.0 (95% CI 1.2 to 13.7) times as likely to die as those who were seizure-free or who had only simple partial seizures. Time-dependent Cox analysis showed that the yearly outcome group did not significantly affect mortality (HR 1.3, 95% CI 0.9 to 1.8). Conclusion: Successful epilepsy surgery was associated with a reduced risk of premature mortality, compared with those with refractory focal epilepsy who did not have surgical treatment. To some extent, the reduced mortality is likely to be conferred by inducing freedom from seizures. It is not certain whether better survival is attributable only to surgery, as treatment decisions were not randomised, and there may be inherent differences between the groups.<br/
Suggestion, hypnosis and hypnotherapy: a survey of use, knowledge and attitudes of anaesthetists

It is being increasingly recognised as a useful intervention for managing a range of symptoms, especially pain and anxiety. We surveyed all 317 South Australian Fellows and trainees registered with ANZCA to determine their use, knowledge of, and attitudes towards positive suggestion, hypnosis and hypnotherapy in their anaesthesia practice. The response rate was 218 anaesthetists (69%). The majority of respondents (63%) rated their level of knowledge on this topic as below average. Forty-eight per cent of respondents indicated that there was a role for hypnotherapy in clinical anaesthesia, particularly in areas seen as traditional targets for the modality, i.e. pain and anxiety states. Nearly half of the anaesthetists supported the use of hypnotherapy and positive suggestions within clinical anaesthesia. Those respondents who had experience of clinical hypnotherapy were more likely to support hypnosis teaching at undergraduate or postgraduate level when compared with those with no experience.http://www.aaic.net.au/Article.asp?D=200408
A simple example of "Quantum Darwinism": Redundant information storage in many-spin environments
As quantum information science approaches the goal of constructing quantum
computers, understanding loss of information through decoherence becomes
increasingly important. The information about a system that can be obtained
from its environment can facilitate quantum control and error correction.
Moreover, observers gain most of their information indirectly, by monitoring
(primarily photon) environments of the "objects of interest." Exactly how this
information is inscribed in the environment is essential for the emergence of
"the classical" from the quantum substrate. In this paper, we examine how
many-qubit (or many-spin) environments can store information about a single
system. The information lost to the environment can be stored redundantly, or
it can be encoded in entangled modes of the environment. We go on to show that
randomly chosen states of the environment almost always encode the information
so that an observer must capture a majority of the environment to deduce the
system's state. Conversely, in the states produced by a typical decoherence
process, information about a particular observable of the system is stored
redundantly. This selective proliferation of "the fittest information" (known
as Quantum Darwinism) plays a key role in choosing the preferred, effectively
classical observables of macroscopic systems. The developing appreciation that
the environment functions not just as a garbage dump, but as a communication
channel, is extending our understanding of the environment's role in the

A computerized method of reporting operating quality costs
The purpose of this report is to explain the computerized method of reporting operating quality costs at the Neutron Devices Department (NDD), St. Petersburg, Florida. Quality Control Management recognized the need to report operating quality costs more meaningfully. With the aid and cooperation of the Finance Section, a GE 415 computerized (COBOL) procedure was developed and implemented at NDD to measure quality cost expenditures more effectively. The detailed procedure and explanation of pertinent quality cost activities can be found in the Appendices
Electronic structure and ferroelectricity in SrBi2Ta2O9
The electronic structure of SrBi2Ta2O9 is investigated from first-principles,
within the local density approximation, using the full-potential linearized
augmented plane wave (LAPW) method. The results show that, besides the large
Ta(5d)-O(2p) hybridization which is a common feature of the ferroelectric
perovskites, there is an important hybridization between bismuth and oxygen
states. The underlying static potential for the ferroelectric distortion and
the primary source for ferroelectricity is investigated by a lattice-dynamics

Preparation and ferroelectric properties of (124)-oriented SrBi4Ti4O15 ferroelectric thin film on (110)-oriented LaNiO3 electrode
A (124)-oriented SrBi4Ti4O15 (SBTi) ferroelectric thin film with high volume
fraction of {\alpha}SBTi(124)=97% was obtained using a metal organic
decomposition process on SiO2/Si substrate coated by (110)-oriented LaNiO3
(LNO) thin film. The remanent polarization and coercive field for
(124)-oriented SBTi film are 12.1 {\mu}C/cm2 and 74 kV/cm, respectively. No
evident fatigue of (124)-oriented SBTi thin film can be observed after
1{\times}10e9 switching cycles. Besides, the (124)-oriented SBTi film can be
uniformly polarized over large areas using a piezoelectric-mode atomic force
microscope. Considering that the annealing temperature was 650{\deg}C and the
thickness of each deposited layer was merely 30 nm, a long-range epitaxial
relationship between SBTi(124) and LNO(110) facets was proposed. The epitaxial

Cluster Masses Accounting for Structure along the Line of Sight
Weak gravitational lensing of background galaxies by foreground clusters
offers an excellent opportunity to measure cluster masses directly without
using gas as a probe. One source of noise which seems difficult to avoid is
large scale structure along the line of sight. Here I show that, by using
standard map-making techniques, one can minimize the deleterious effects of
this noise. The resulting uncertainties on cluster masses are significantly
smaller than when large scale structure is not properly accounted for, although
