A thesis on ranking and selection in the method of paired comparison
Experimental situations where the subjective judgements or
appraisals of the individuals , lead to qualitative, comparative
responses or situations where quantifications through measure
ments are difficult or illusary, the method of paired comparison
has a significant role to play. Interest in paired comparison
has been generated through the paired nature of competitions of
many kinds, through the experimental simplicit:y of sensory
comparisons of items observed in pairs, and through combinatorial
properties associated with the construction of experimental
designs or tournaments.
The method of paired comparisons has had a long and honourable
history in psycological experiments. During the past three
decades this method has attracted the attention of people from
a wide spectrum of interest. In general, the method would be
applicable whenever the objects can be presented to judges to
assess their non-measurable quality in pairs either simulteniously
or in succession.
The basic goal in the method of paired comparison is to
discriminate between t> 2 treatments, on the basis of preference
data obtained by presenting the treatments in pairs in a given
order to a set of judges according to a specified paired comparison
design. In such experimental situations the method has led to
a surprising amount of model building to provide simple stochastic
representation. The main statistical problem with these models
have generally been that of estimation of the true worths of the
treatments, testing of goodness of fit of the model, testing the
hypothesis of equality of treatments etc based on the score
vector obtained by using a suitable economical paired comparison
design. Another type of problem that is of interest is to select
the best treatment with at least a specified high probability,
using a definite selection rule. Selection rules are defined in
terms of the score vector that is obtained by using the given
design. A related problem i s that o f choosing a subset of given
treatments which includes the best treatment with at least a
specified high probability. These problems are respectively
special cases of the two basic formulations referred to as
Indifference zone formulation end Subset s e l ection formulation
in the area of Ranking and Selection procedures for statistical

Structural change in the traditional fishery of Kerala and its socio economic implications
Motorization of traditional fishing craft has paved the way for a structural change in the artisanal fishery of Kerala. During the mid eighties the traditional sector started operating mini purse seines (Ring seine) and mini trawl nets and consequently the traditional
gears in vogue for decades have been either disappeared or thoroughly modified. These two gears together contributed to more than 80% of the traditional landings. Hence the traditional fishing scenario has been completely changed which resulted in far reaching developments in the
artisanal fishery sector
The eels and eel fisheries of India
Traditionally marketable species of eels are
caught from conventional fishing grounds of
northwest and northeast coasts of India and are
largely a by-catch
Present status of exploitation of fish and shellfish resources: Marine fish production of maritime states Of the west coast of India
To highlight the fishery in monsoon, an attempt has been made In this paper to evaluate the impad of monsoon
fishing on the exploited marine fish stocks in the west coast of India and the trends In the production of various group
in different seasons discussed.
Except in Kerala where monsoon fishing is intensive due to the Mud Bank fishery and trawling off Sakthlkulangara
and Kochi, in the rest of the coast fishing adivitics are not as intensive as in Kerala during monsoon. The major
gears used during monsoon are trawls and ring seines in Keral
Marine fisheries of Orissa
A brief account of marine fish landings in Orissa during 1985 to
1995 is given in this paper. Gearwise, groupwise and districtwise marine
fish landings in this state was also discussed together with a critical analysis
of marine fishery of the state during the last five decade
Marine fisheries in Gujarat
A brief account of marine fish landings in Gujarat during 1985-
95 is given in this paper. Contribution of different gears along with
the CPUE and the regionwise as well as groupwise details are also
presented. The status and prospect of marine fisheries ofihe state
is discussed with the aid of last 5 decades landing data
Present status of exploitation of fish and shellfish resources: Ribbonfishes
The average annual ribbonfish production of the west coast is estimated at 56,883 tonnes which forms 5.71%
of the total fish landing of he coast. Postmonsoon m n reaIised 47% of the catch M o d by prmonm (39%)
and m o n m (14%) seasons. This trend Is well seen In States like Maharashtra and Karnataka. In Kerala, however,
the peak landing (49%) was found during mosoon months while in the other two States it was during the premonsoon
period. Trawl net is the only gear operated in all the States during all the seasons and It accounts few about 67% of
the total catch
Appraisal of the Marine Fisheries of West Bengal
The state of West Bengal is situated between the latitudes 21.5CN
and 24.5┬░N and the longitudes 86CE and 89┬░E. Its location is in the northern
part of Bay of Bengal; between the state of Orissa in the south and
Bangladesh in the east.
West Bengal, with an area of 87,853 sq. km accounts for 2.6% of
the geographical area of India. For administrative purposes, the state is
divided into 3 Divisions : Burdwam Division, Presidency Division and
Jalpaiguri Division. Within each division the districts form administrative
units. There are 16 districts of which two are coastal. The coastal districts
are Midnapore and 24 Parganas. These together have a coastline of 65.0 km,
forming 1.0% of the coastline of India
Production pattern in the marine fisheries of Kerala
Fisheries play a crucial role in the Kerala economy. Although the coastline is only about
one tenth of the coastline of India, landings in Kerala constitute more than 30 pet of the
country's total marine fish production. This sector provides the main source of income for
about 147900 active fishermen and for almost an equal number engaged in the activities of
processing and marketing. Earnings from export of marine production from Kerala have
during the past two decades increased considerably. The marine fisheries sector is therefore
one of the major concerns of the economic planners in the state of Kerala and the object of A
various development programmes
Appraisal of the Marine Fisheries in Orissa
The State Orissa is situated between latitudes 17.75┬░N and 22.5┬░N
and longitudes 81.5┬░E and 87.6┬░E, bordered by the Bay of Bengal in the
east, West Bengal in the north-east, Bihar in the north, Madhyapradesh in
the west and north-west, and Andhra Pradesh in the south.
Orissa, with an area of 1 55,842 sq. km. accounts for 4.7% of the
geographical area of India. The state has 13 districts, of which four are
coastal. The coastal districts are Balasore, Cuttack, Puri and Ganjam. These
together have a coastline of 480 km. forming 8% of the coastline of India
