    ATLBS: the Australia Telescope Low-brightness Survey

    We present a radio survey carried out with the Australia Telescope Compact Array. A motivation for the survey was to make a complete inventory of the diffuse emission components as a step towards a study of the cosmic evolution in radio source structure and the contribution from radio-mode feedback on galaxy evolution. The Australia Telescope low-brightness survey (ATLBS) at 1388 MHz covers 8.42 sq deg of the sky in an observing mode designed to yield images with exceptional surface brightness sensitivity and low confusion. The ATLBS radio images, made with 0.08 mJy/beam rms noise and 50" beam, detect a total of 1094 sources with peak flux exceeding 0.4 mJy/beam. The ATLBS source counts were corrected for blending, noise bias, resolution, and primary beam attenuation; the normalized differential source counts are consistent with no upturn down to 0.6 mJy. The percentage integrated polarization Pi_0 was computed after corrections for the polarization bias in integrated polarized intensity; Pi_0 shows an increasing trend with decreasing flux density. Simultaneous visibility measurements made with longer baselines yielded images, with 5" beam, of compact components in sources detected in the survey. The observations provide a measurement of the complexity and diffuse emission associated with mJy and sub-mJy radio sources. 10% of the ATLBS sources have more than half of their flux density in extended emission and the fractional flux in diffuse components does not appear to vary with flux density, although the percentage of sources that have complex structure increases with flux density. The observations are consistent with a transition in the nature of extended radio sources from FR-II radio source morphology, which dominates the mJy population, to FR-I structure at sub-mJy flux density.     K Giants in Baade's Window. II. The Abundance Distribution

    This is the second in a series of papers in which we analyze spectra of over 400 K and M giants in Baade's Window, including most of the stars with proper motions measured by Spaenhauer et al. [AJ, 103, 297 (1992)]. In our first paper, we measured line--strength indices of Fe, Mg, CN and Hβ\beta and calibrated them on the system of Faber et al. [ApJS, 57, 711 (1985)]. Here, we use the Fe\langle{\rm Fe}\rangle index to derive an abundance distribution in [Fe/H] for 322 stars with effective temperatures between 3900 K and 5160 K. Our derived values of [Fe/H] agree well with those measured from high--resolution echelle spectra (e.g., McWilliam \& Rich [ApJS, 91, 749 (1994)]) for the small number of stars in common. We find a mean abundance [Fe/H]=0.11±0.04\langle{\rm [Fe/H]}\rangle = -0.11 \pm 0.04 for our sample of Baade's Window K giants. More than half the sample lie in the range 0.4<-0.4 < \feh\ <+0.3<+0.3. We estimate line--of--sight distances for individual stars in our sample and confirm that, in Baade's Window, most K giants with V<15.5V < 15.5 are foreground disk stars, but the great majority (more than 80\%) with V>16V > 16 belong to the bulge. We also compare the metallicities derived from the CN and Mg2_2 indices to those from iron. Most of the metal--rich stars in our sample appear to be CN--weak, in contrast to the situation in metal--rich globular clusters and elliptical galaxies. The metal--poor half of our sample ([Fe/H] <0< 0) shows evidence for a mild Mg overenhancement ([Mg/Fe] +0.2\sim +0.2); but this is not seen in the more metal--rich stars ([Fe/H] \geq 0). The K giants in Baade's Window therefore share some, but not all, of the characteristics of stars in elliptical galaxies as inferred from their integrated light.Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astronomical Journal, tentatively scheduled for July, 1996.     A deep survey of the low-surface-brightness radio sky

    We have made a radio survey--the Australia Telescope Low Brightness Survey (ATLBS)--of 8.4 square degrees sky area, using the Australia Telescope Compact Array in the 20-cm band, in an observing mode designed to provide wide-field images with exceptional sensitivity in surface brightness, and thereby explore a new parameter space in radio source populations. The goals of this survey are to quantify the distribution in angular sizes, particularly at weak surface brightness levels: this has implications for the confusion in deep surveys with the SKA. The survey is expected to lead to a census of the radio emission associated with low-power radio galaxies at redshifts 1-3, without any missing extended emission, and hence a study of the cosmic evolution of low-power radio galaxies to higher redshift and a comprehensive study of the AGN feedback during the intense black hole growth phase during this redshift range.Comment: 5 pages, includes 2 figures and 1 table.     Coherence-enhanced imaging of a degenerate Bose gas

    We present coherence-enhanced imaging, an in situ technique that uses Raman superradiance to probe the spatial coherence properties of an ultracold gas. Applying this method, we obtain a spatially resolved measurement of the condensate number and more generally, of the first-order spatial correlation function in a gas of 87^{87}Rb atoms. We observe the enhanced decay of propagating spin gratings in high density regions of a Bose condensate, a decay we ascribe to collective, non-linear atom-atom scattering. Further, we directly observe spatial inhomogeneities that arise generally in the course of extended sample superradiance.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    A search for distant radio galaxies from SUMSS and NVSS: III. radio spectral energy distributions and the z-alpha correlation

    This is the third in a series of papers that present observations and results for a sample of 76 ultra-steep-spectrum radio sources designed to find galaxies at high redshift. Here we present multi-frequency radio observations, from the Australia Telescope Compact Array, for a subset of 37 galaxies from the sample. Matched resolution observations at 2.3, 4.8 and 6.2GHz are presented for all galaxies, with the z<2 galaxies additionally observed at 8.6 and 18GHz. New angular size constraints are reported for 19 sources based on high resolution 4.8 and 6.2GHz observations. Functional forms for the rest-frame spectral energy distributions are derived: 89% of the sample is well characterised by a single power law, whilst the remaining 11% show some flattening toward higher frequencies: not one source shows any evidence for high frequency steepening. We discuss the implications of this result in light of the empirical correlation between redshift and spectral index seen in flux limited samples of radio galaxies. Finally, a new physical mechanism to explain the redshift -- spectral index correlation is posited: extremely steep spectrum radio galaxies in the local universe usually reside at the centres of rich galaxy clusters. We argue that if a higher fraction of radio galaxies, as a function of redshift, are located in environments with densities similar to nearby rich clusters, then this could be a natural interpretation for the correlation.     Radio Sources in the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey. I. Radio Source Populations

    We present the first results from a study of the radio continuum properties of galaxies in the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey, based on thirty 2dF fields covering a total area of about 100 square degrees. About 1.5% of galaxies with b(J) < 19.4 mag are detected as radio continuum sources in the NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS). Of these, roughly 40% are star-forming galaxies and 60% are active galaxies (mostly low-power radio galaxies and a few Seyferts). The combination of 2dFGRS and NVSS will eventually yield a homogeneous set of around 4000 radio-galaxy spectra, which will be a powerful tool for studying the distriibution and evolution of both AGN and starburst galaxies out to redshift z=0.3.Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in PAS

    What Powers the Compact Radio Emission in Nearby Elliptical and S0 Galaxies?

    Many nearby early-type (elliptical and S0) galaxies contain weak (milli-Jansky level) nuclear radio sources on scales a few hundred parsecs or less. The origin of the radio emission, however, has remained unclear, especially in volume-limited samples that select intrinsically less luminous galaxies. Both active galactic nuclei and nuclear star formation have been suggested as possible mechanisms for producing the radio emission. This paper utilizes optical spectroscopic information to address this issue. A substantial fraction of the early-type galaxies surveyed with the Very Large Array by Wrobel & Heeschen (1991) exhibits detectable optical emission lines in their nuclei down to very sensitive limits. Comparison of the observed radio continuum power with that expected from the thermal gas traced by the optical emission lines implies that the bulk of the radio emission is nonthermal. Both the incidence and the strength of optical line emission correlate with the radio power. At a fixed line luminosity, ellipticals have stronger radio cores than S0s. The relation between radio power and line emission observed in this sample is consistent with the low-luminosity extension of similar relations seen in classical radio galaxies and luminous Seyfert nuclei. A plausible interpretation of this result is that the weak nuclear sources in nearby early-type galaxies are the low-luminosity counterparts of more powerful AGNs. The spectroscopic evidence supports this picture. Most of the emission-line objects are optically classified as Seyfert nuclei or low-ionization nuclear emission-line regions (LINERs), the majority of which are likely to be accretion-powered sources.Comment: LaTex, 16 pages including embedded figures.     An experimental examination of program maintainability as a function of structuredness

    The general ethos of producing structured programs has been, at least in theory, adopted throughout the software engineering community. By studying and measuring the structure of existing software we can estimate the benefits to be gained from changes in the structure in terms of the external attributes (perceived behaviour) of the re- structured software. [13, 2, 3, 10, 6, 7]. In this paper we report the results of two controlled experiments measuring the improvement on the maintainability of differently structured code. These experiments build on the experience and insights gained through an earlier experiment [5]. We discuss a strategy for re-structuring based on an improved re-engineering factor [9] and present the static measures of morphology (depth and width of module calls), coupling and cohesion and module complexity of a range of programs. By plotting these measures and adopting target values (e.g. width of call< 5) we estimate the expected improvement in the maintainability after re-engineering. We subsequently carry out the re-engineering, measure the re-structured code statically and measure the actual maintainability experimentally. The results reveal that unstructured programmes take longer to 'reveal their secrets'. An integral part of this work are the design and execution of controlled experiments as well as the use of automated tools for the static analysis of code and the recording of the experimental data

    K giants in Baade's window; 1, velocity and line-strength measurements

    This is the first in a series of papers in which we analyze medium--resolution spectra of over 400 K and M giants in Baade's Window. Our sample was selected from the proper motion study of Spaenhauer et al. [AJ, 103, 297 (1992)]. We have measured radial velocities for most of the sample, as well as line--strength indices on the system of Faber et al. [ApJS, 57, 711 (1985)]. We analyze the random and systematic errors in velocities and line strengths, and show that the bright (V < 16.0) stars in our sample are predominantly foreground disk stars along the line--of--sight toward Baade's Window. We find that most of the bulge K giants have stronger Mg absorption at a given color than do stars in the solar neighborhood. If the K giants in our sample are moderately old, we suggest that on average they may have [Mg/Fe] ~ +0.3, consistent with the results of recent high--resolution spectroscopy in Baade's Window
