The study uses the qualitative approach by utilizing the semi-structured interviews of 40 international students in the first year of their study in selected public universities. The findings of the study show a positive relationship between the students’ self-sufficiency and their academic performance. The factors contributing to the different self-sufficiency adaptation of the students were discussed in the context of the recognition for the public university’s reputation, current courses offered by the university, the courses’ marketability, English as the medium use in the university teaching delivery, customers’ satisfaction, and the guaranteed quality services coordination, and. continuous accreditation recognition. The findings will become valuable information for future international students planning to further their study overseas. The findings can also be used as guidelines by the university’s management in understanding the implication of self-sufficiency and sustainability on international students’ academic performance

Teori kepimpinan transformasi menurut perspektif islam: Satu analisis

    Get PDF

Redeem your past: Teaching challenges and hopes behind bars

Prison is often perceived negatively due to its purposes such as retribution, incapacitation, deterrence, and rehabilitation for people who are legally held for a crime they have committed. However, the prison institutions are serving a larger-than-life mission to transform the inmates’ life which includes correctional education. This study investigated the challenges faced by teachers in prison schools. Utilizing a qualitative research design, this case study involved seven teachers from the prison Integrity School for young inmates. The interview data were analyzed based on Braun and Clarke’s thematic framework. Findings showed teaching challenges such as pedagogy, teaching and learning materials, policy and opportunities. Another emerging theme points to the hopes harbored to further improve educational attainment in prison. This has led to several suggestions such as (1) modules and skills-based course development to focus on young inmates serving short prison terms (minimum of 3 months); and (2) fluid and organic pedagogical approaches. Drawing upon Nelson Mandela’s famous quote, ‘education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world’, this study is addressing more insights to add value to the young inmates’ educational opportunities in prison school. Serving time in prison does not deter the inmates from pursuing their education because they deserve a second chance to reclaim their life post-prison term

Digital culture has become part of world mainstream reality, and the phenomenon of Covid-19 pandemic has further boosted the importance of digital culture empowerment among the global community. Conventional businesses are affected by the pandemic due to the control of movement and physical encounters causing traders to switch to digital businesses. Due to the importance of digital world, especially in the endemic era, this study has been initiated to analyse the literature review on the adoption of digital culture in the micro scale business industries in East Malaysia. Content/text analysis of some of the scholars‟ scientific works and participant observations have been utilised for data collection. The study found that there was a lack of literature review on the adoption of digital culture as a mechanism for the sustainability or survival of micro scale business industry among traders in East Malaysia during the Covid-19 pandemic. It also found that there is a diversity in the corpus of knowledge, conceptual aspect as well as trends of the authors‟ and scholars‟ approaches. This study is important because 76.6% of the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) is the micro scale businesses. SMEs makes up 99% of the 920,624 business establishments in Malaysia. Despite being the backbone of the business landscape in Malaysia, SMEs have performed poorly in the digitalisation aspect. It is hoped that this paper will be able to contribute significantly to the academicians and researchers who specialise in the epistemological thought or knowledge

Empowering Adult Inmates with Communication Needs in an East Malaysia Prison

Communication skills are essential in our daily life because we communicate to pass information from one person to another. However, to have effective communication in a correctional environment, like prisons, is not easy. There are many distractions and barriers to communicate effectively in prisons. Although prison education should be seen as a way to educate inmates to successfully integrate in society upon their release, inmates face difficulties in getting enough reading materials, content and learning tools to enhance their communication skills. This may negatively affect their integration in society and employability after serving their sentences. Therefore, this study aimed to elicit the communication needs of the adult inmates in one of the local prisons in East Malaysia. We employed a textography research approach, where we combined textual analysis and an ethnographic method (interview), to investigate contexts, texts and practices of the prison studied. The findings showed that the inmates need to learn verbal and non-verbal communication, new technologies for communication and simple English conversations. This study is pertinent in providing insights for the development of suitable teaching and learning modules for prison learning institutions
