    Production of Activated Carbon in a Multi-Functional Platform Pilot Plant

    Activated carbons were produced from coconut shells as  raw materials in a Multi-Functional Platform (MFP) pilot plant using the chemical activation method.. Derived activated carbon named, C1, C2, C3, C4, C5, and C6, based on the activation agent used and the heating rate employed, were compared to a commercial activated carbon based on acceptable parameters. C1, C2, C3, C4, C5 and C6 had relative hardness of 95.67%, 92.67%, 89.67, 91.6%, 90.67% and 93.33% respectively, averaging 92.26%, as compared to 95.6% relative hardness for the commercial activated carbon used. C6 the best performing activated carbon produced (using KOH and heating rate of 7.67 ºC/min) , had an adsorption rate of 188.68 mg Au/ h g, which was higher than the adsorption rate of the commercial activated carbon, which is 185.19 mg Au/ h g. This validates the possibility of activated carbon production commercially in Ghana

    Household factors and gestational age predict diet quality of pregnant women.

    Adequate diet during pregnancy has positive effects on the mother and pregnancy outcome. Assessment of diet quality during pregnancy is particularly important in areas where household food security is suboptimal, to enable appropriate targeting and intervention. This study assessed diet quality and identified predicting factors among pregnant women in northern Ghana. A cross-sectional study involving 403 pregnant women was conducted in May 2018. Pregnant women attending antenatal care clinics (ANC) were selected using simple random sampling technique. We assessed socio-demographic characteristics, 24-h recall and household food security. The minimum dietary diversity for women (MDD-W) was used as a proxy measure for diet quality based on Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) guidelines. Logistic regression models were fitted to determine the predictors of diet quality. The mean dietary diversity score (DDS) of 10 food groups was 4.4 ± 1.1 (95% CI: 4.3-4.5). Logistic regression showed that women of high educational level (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] = 2.42; 95% confidence interval [CI] [1.21-4.84]; P = 0.01), women of high household wealth index (AOR = 1.78; 95% CI [1.14-2.77]; P = 0.01], none/mild household hunger (AOR = 2.71; 95% CI [1.26-5.82]; P = 0.01), medium household size (6-15 members) (AOR = 1.66; 95% CI [1.04-2.66]; P = 0.03) and women of gestational age 20-35 weeks (AOR = 1.89; 95% CI [1.05-3.40]; P = 0.03) were more likely to have quality diets after adjusting for potential confounding variables. Diet quality among pregnant women was low and was predicted by educational level, household wealth, gestational age and food security.     Determinants of dietary diversity among pregnant women in Laikipia County, Kenya: a cross-sectional study

    BACKGROUND: Dietary diversity has continued to gain widespread attention among the population since it has evidently been associated with nutrient adequacy. A diverse diet has been shown to reflect nutrient adequacy since no one food can meet the nutritional requirement of a person. Pregnant women have been considered vulnerable to malnutrition due to their increased nutrient requirement and therefore a variety of foods in their diet is considered imperative in ensuring adequate nutrient intake. To promote dietary diversity, it is important to understand the factors associated with it. This paper therefore assessed the determinants of dietary diversity among pregnant women in Laikipia County, Kenya. METHODS: The study was a cross-sectional analytical study consisting of 254 pregnant women attending antenatal clinic at Nanyuki Teaching and Referral Hospital in Laikipia County, Kenya. RESULTS: The mean Dietary Diversity Score (DDS) was 6.84 ± 1.46 Standard Deviation (SD), with cereals being the most (99%) commonly consumed food group. Adjusted Logistic Regression (AOR) analyses revealed education level (AOR = 2.78; (95% Confidence Interval (CI) 1.06, 5.32; p < 0.001), employment status (AOR = 2.29; CI 1.18, 4.14; p = 0.003), monthly income (AOR = 2.08; CI 1.32, 3.03; p < 0.001), household assets (AOR = 1.93; CI 0.73, 6.90; p = 0.030), land ownership (AOR = 0.64; CI 0.44, 2.25; p = 0.040), and morbidity (AOR = 0.78; CI 0.36, 2.34; p = 0.010) among the pregnant women as the variables that influenced their dietary diversity. CONCLUSION: Socioeconomic factors (education level, employment status, monthly income, household assets and land ownership) have been shown to influence dietary diversity in this study. New policies and intervention programmes targeting these determinants of dietary diversity should therefore be enacted, while the existing ones should be supported and monitored particularly among the vulnerable populations. Such policies and programmes among pregnant women will ensure improved dietary diversity and adequate nutrient intake. Similarly, since morbidity incidence among pregnant women have been shown to significantly influence dietary diversity, public health awareness campaign on the importance of early detection and timely treatment of diseases among pregnant women should be launched by the relevant stakeholders

    Specific effects of monovalent counterions on the structural and interfacial properties of dodecyl sulfate monolayers

    A series of molecular dynamics simulations have been conducted in order to study the specific ion effects of Li+, Na+, Cs+ and NH4+ cations on dodecyl sulfate (DS-) monolayers. Varying the counterion had no appreciable effect on the structure of the surfactant molecules within the different monolayers. However, the different counterions have a significant effect on the interfacial properties of the monolayer. In particular, we have investigated to what extent each of the counterions is dehydrated when interacting with the DS- headgroup, the specific interactions between the counterions and the headgroup and the salt bridging of the headgroups caused by each counterion. The NH4+ ions are found to directly compete with water molecules to form hydrogen bonds with the DS- headgroup and as a result the ammonium dodecyl sulfate monolayer is the least hydrated of any of those studied. The Cs+ ions are strongly bound to the headgroup and weakly hydrated, such that they would prefer to displace water in the DS- hydration shell to interact with the headgroups. In the case of the Li+ ions, they interact almost as strongly with the DS- headgroups as the Na+ ions, but are generally less hydrated than the Na+ ions and consequently the lithium dodecyl sulfate monolayers are less hydrated than the sodium dodecyl sulfate monolayers. Therefore, by changing the counterion, one can modify the interfacial properties of the surfactant monolayer, and thus affect their ability to encapsulate poorly water soluble drug molecules, which we discuss further in the manuscript.Peer ReviewedPreprin
